Lilywhite Lilith (great way to start the second disc or side 3 of the old vinyl) just beats The Lamia - another classic for me.
Not too fussed about the others - though I do like Steve's guitar break in The fountain.

The Fountain of Salamacis was the first Genesis track I heard (on the compilation "Charisma keyboards) and it led to a lifelong love of the band's early material.
Great track!

Lamia is some kind of creature. We don't know the name of this particular Lamia. So it shouldnt be included..
Otherwise you could include "All in a mouse's night" too...

Lamia is a daemon from the Greek mythology, a queen-turned-daemon. In "The Lamb" it is three vermilion snakes for some reason. It's interesting that Peter mentioned Lamia because in a way it kind of makes sense: LAMia, LAMb.
Oh, well. Sorry for the digression.

Depends what lamia is being referred too. Gabriel is referring to the creature lamia and not the Queen Lamia. Otherwise the song would be called "Lamia" and not "The Lamia"

Lamia is a name of mystical creature, a woman with snake's skin. Salmacis is a similar case. I don't understand where you see any problem.

I would have voted The Lamia except, as I think has been established earlier in the thread, it doesn't belong here. As the songs lyric goes "we are the lamia of the pool .." It is the collective name for a group of creatures.
Harold the Barrel is my next favourite song on the list so it gets my vote. I love the the dark humour of the song, the theatrical structure and some very nice melodies. Get em Out By Friday developed the style on Foxtrot and again in The Battle of Epping Forest on SEBTP (though, IMO less succesfully).

Oh yuck! Salmacis and Lamia are beautiful creatures at least , but the squonk is really ugly one.
Generally: I think that here there was a confusion of terms, what's actually the proper name and what's the general name of any being. I feel it's the think ice. However, I'm not a great expert on mythology, also English is not my native language. So I apologize for this confusion.
