Tie between Jethro Tull's "Aqualung", Page & Plant's live and Middle-Eastern-sounding "No Quarter" and Supertramp's "...Even in the Quietest Moments". My mom recorded them from CD to tape so that I could put it on my kiddie tape-playing walkman. Oh how times have changed.
In retrospect, I find this really, really funny. Most of my friends at the time were listening to New Kids on the Block and obsessing over Josh, 'the cute one' or something like that. Me? Digging Roger Hodgson's voice and jamming to the flute solo on "Locomotive Breath". Yeah that's right.
Ha! Go Devo, that is awesome. I've seen one of their music videos (retro night on MTV!) - "We are not Men, We are DEVO!" and I laughed so hard. That scientist, man can he dance. *sarcasm*

First full album listen...I think it was probably a soundtrack like the Mission Impossible movie (90s) soundtrack or something.
First full prog rock album listen would be Pink Floyd - The Wall if you count that as prog rock. If not Pink Floyd, first prog rock album would be Yes - Close to the Edge.
First prog metal album...Opeth - Blackwater Park, Still Life, My Arms Your Hearse and Dream Theater - Awake.

I didn't quite understand, I thought RUM26 meant the "very first album", not necessarily prog... Anyway, let me relieve from your embarrassment: Micheal Jackson's Bad... I think I was 13-15 something. I liked it so much that I made a copy
If the question was restricted to prog, it would have been difficult, since every other day something I knew from my past turns out to be prog!!! Example? Jean Michel Jarre (oxygene), Vangelis (Spiral, Chariots of Fire), Procol Harum (Whiter Shade of Pale), albeit I did not listen to these pieces in entire albums. Nevertheless, I knew the highlights from my childhood (especially electronic instrumental tracks were played in the radio every now and then as filler...)
As my first vinyl, I remember DP's Singles A's and B's (the shorter one, with fireball as the last track). There sure must be other, and probably earlier ones, (among which Thriller of MJ has a place!) but this is very prominent for me (and relieves me from my shame to an extent!!!). I STILL believe DP is prog!!!!!
Oh, and there are Turkish folk/pop artists, but you are not interested in them anyway... (those who look for new tastes from unexplored grounds may want to check Baris Mancho and Erkin Koray. These are among the first and most respected turkish psychedelic/folk/prog rock artists. good luck, because the spelling of the former differs widely!)
------------- Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret: Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

My first self owned cd, if I recall correctly, was a nsync single...or was it "smurfhits - vol 4"? You know these little blue cuties. Oh those were the times. BTW about 2 and half months later, at christmas eve, I got Kind of Blue from my grandpa. I think I was 5 or 6! Talk about musical progression! Sadly i never liked the cover, at that time cartoons was a effective eye catcher, so it sort of disappeared, unfortunely

And I think the first real album I ever bought must've been Radiohead's Pablo Honey. (nowadays people think this is prog )
My first prog album was Yes' 90125 (because of "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" ), I think (but that was much later)

finish. The first prog cassettes i bought were "Nursery Cryme" and
"Duke" on the same day and the former changed my life (well, sort
of...). then i switched to lps. my first one was "Snakes and ladders"
by Gerry Rafferty (oh! what a great pop musician!) and the first prog
was Mike Odlfield's double "Airborn", actually a Canadian release (i
still wonder how i came across it in Italy - btw, i'm looking for the
cd, anybody knows more about a mysterious edition that should

The first album I bought was Deep Purple's Machine Head. My Uncle got me into them. My Dad also had them on reel to reel, so they are the first band I remember hearing and really enjoying. Though they aren't prog, I still enjoy them. They are one of the few non-prog bands I still listen to. By the way trouserpress, In Rock is a great album. I just saw Deep Purple last summer. Ian Gillan was unbelievable. Great concert.

The 1st albums I listened to, as a kid, must have been albums from one of my older brothers, who was into Genesis, Yes, Kayak and Boudewijn de Groot (Dutch folk singer). He probably had records by PFM, Pink Floyd, and certainly a triple live album by Angelo Branduardi (Italian prog folk artist) as well.
My oldest brother was into ELP and ELO. My youngest brother was into Procol Harum. From school parties I remember Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd.
So it's no wonder that the 1st album I bought, age 16, was a prog record: Merlin by Kayak. Then I bought albums by Steve Winwood and Deep Purple, but when I got some Genesis records at my 17th birthday, I became a Genesis fan and rediscovered the albums my older brothers listened to, and discovered 'new' bands like Traffic, King Crimson, U.K. etc. etc.

I think the first record I ever heard may have been one of the Pink Floyd albums my dad had (possibly 'A Momentary Lapse Of Reason') , but the first one I ever personally bought was 'Real Love' by The Beatles. Purists don't like that record, but I really do- it's a very nice tune. They were probably the first band I ever loved, and occasionally went off them in my youth, but I have grown to love them again now.
