I was having a discussion with a friend who's working on a progressive rock based online show about albums that are perfect except for that one song that you can't listen to, and I was wondering what your opinions were as to which songs these are.

A perfect example I would say is "Moonchild" from Court of the Crimson King. The other 4 songs on that album are damn near flawless, but "Moonchild" bores me to absolutely no end.

My friend and I were curious as to what other examples you guys may have to offer.

Cans and Brahams from Fragile anyone? I don't object the concept of including a classical solo piece (I am completely fine with Mood For a Day) but Wakeman is capable of higher quality... I don't know what was he thinking....

I sorta like those little pieces in Fragile. Although I think the only purpose of We Have Heaven is to make Heart of the Sunrise cooler.

I actually love Cans And Brahms. It was great that they added that in for Rick's solo piece. On that album I would say We Have Heaven and Long Distance Runaround spoil the album a bit.

"El Ciervo Vulnerado" by the Mars Volta definitely fits this category.

While we're on King Crimson, I'd also say "The Mincer" fits also.  Side 1 of SABB should have closed with the gorgeous "Trio" instead of piling on a directionless jam.  Also, I'm going to be a tad controversial and say "Ladies of the Road" drags down the album "Islands." It's too catchy, too sexist, too rock, and it doesn't fit the feel of the album at all.

Shocked  Long Distance Runaround is great. I don't have any problem with anything on Fragile.

Roger Taylor's songs were usually the weak points in many Queen albums. Let's not talk about ELP...

Ah Benny's okay. So is Jeremy. Nutrocker not so much. The Sheriff. Sheesh, Emerson was channeling  a piano player in an Old West saloon. Mebbe hook him up with Taupin and they can rock with that honky tonk piano while the Gibson Girls dance, and the hookers ply their trade, and real men drink whiskey just prior to killing one another out on a dusty Western street. And if that doesn't work go back to Meade Lux Lewis and some more honky tonk piano, 'cept then you're playing in a whore house, where some shady customer might just take exception to your technique.  I completely understand his love for that stuff. It's too bad he had no ability to play it, except in emulation.

  1. More Fool Me - SEBTP - Genesis
  2. Brethalizer - Criminal Record - Rick Wakeman
  3. Your Own Special Way - Wind & Wuthering - Genesis
The infamous Cha Cha Cha Cha Cha almost ruined Sound Chaser but the rest of the material of Relayer is so good that allowed this cheesy passage do more harm.

This is a good one. I love Sound Chaser and Relayer to death (my favourite Yes album), but that section is kinda odd to me.

Well, I like:

  • Moonchild (unabriged version Wink)
  • Ballad Of The Decomposing Man
  • Cans & Brahms

For the rest: musically perfect albums (I mean ITCOTCK, SM Shocked and F)

I simply dislike
  • Benny The Bouncer
  • The "Cha cha cha" part on Sound Chaser

For the rest, perfect Yes and perfect ELP albums

More Fool Me was definitely my first thought.

Not exactly a great album without it, but Disco Queen is the sinlge worst piece of rubbish Pain of Salvation have ever recorded.

And With Her Came the Birds stops Cult of Luna's Somewhere Along the Highway from reaching masterpiece status for me as well.

I honestly think this is one of the greatest improvisational songs ever, what a bass!!! all the band seems to have the exact idea of what the song is all about. I even like those 4 minutes silence of jiggling sounds between each other, what a great atmosphere!

Although I cannot stand More Fool Me (Genesis really should have heard alarm bells with that one), I have to agree I find Battle Of Epping Forest weak compared to the rest of the album & not a particularly good piece, anyway.

In my (humble & soon to be berated) opinion, they tried to write another character led story song in the vein of Harold The Barrel, Get Em Out By Friday etc, but to me it just didn't gel at all; it was almost (but not quite) as bad as when Collins tried it with 'Robbery Assault & Battery'

I think the music is fine on that track, it's the lyrics I find toe curling.

I've nothing against bands being 'funny' from time to time, but I never felt that Genesis did humour very well, post Gabriel.

As far as Wind & Wuthering goes, I think the weaker tracks are 'Your own special way' and 'Wot Gorilla' They had far better material to draw on at that time. However, the brilliance of the other tracks on the album, means no one track actually ruins the album for me.

But the lyrics make me want to impale myself on a bowling ball.

So suprised at peoples choices. Absolutely love PotU by the Strabs.

Also, I think More Fool Me and Moonchild are great songs. Maybe they are not the amazing epics you were looking for, but they in no way 'ruin' a perfect album. Same with the Cha Cha part in Sound Chaser. Phenominal song and even better album. its only 5 seconds.

One day when you guys make an epic even close to Relayer, maybe then you can omit the Cha Cha's.

I agree with these two. I can't stop myself from laughing when I Think I'm Going Bald comes on. It's just not a good song in general. Supposedly the lyrics are about Max Webster's Kim Mitchell who was losing hair at the time and is now completely bald. Max Webster would tour with Rush a lot in the late 70's and early 80's. Both Toronto bands and they both started around the same time.

That's the one I never really listen to that often. Wot Gorilla? is great, though. I love the keys and drums on that track.

Yeah, there is some great musicianship going on there. Maybe they should have developed the track a little.

Oh no... i thought someone would mention this, since i read some reviews stating the same. CryI honestly think this is one of the greatest improvisational songs ever, what a bass!!! all the band seems to have the exact idea of what the song is all about. I even like those 4 minutes silence of jiggling sounds between each other, what a great atmosphere! When i discovered it was taken from a concert ,it maid me love KC even more. But that's only me.

I love Providence, its so interesting to just imagine the 4 of them on stage playing this off the cuff. Te rhythm section is particularly brilliant.

Glad to know i'm not alone.

I thi k it's their best improv, but it's a shame that the Red version is cut down, the full improv on The Great Deciever is amazing.

I *love* Foxtrot except for Get 'Em Out By Friday which has always irritated me for some reason.

We're gonna have some problems JK, but Get Em Out.. Is my second favorite on that record after Suppers Ready. And Epping Forest has grown on me so much, that now im starting to like it more than Dancing with the Moonlit Knight!

Yellow submarine from revolver

I know the Beatles were well into their novelty tracks and that its iconic of the Beatles psychedelic stuff but I don't think I've ever listened to that album without skipping it.
Just bores me i guess

I actually really like the Cha Chas from "Sound Chaser" too. It injects just enough weirdness into what was already a very weird track. I almost feel as if it's tongue-in-cheek, jokingly throwing in something "catchy" at the end to play with expectations. There are plenty of simple pop songs where "cha cha cha" would not sound out of place at all, so the fact that they precede it with 7 minutes of music that sounds like space aliens makes it really come out of nowhere (in a good way).

Eh, "Cygnus X-1" was worse.

Back On Topic:

"Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" from Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother. Not that bad, but I wish they closed with "Embryo" instead.

"More Of That Jazz" From Queen's Jazz. Anticlimactic compared to "Don't Stop Me Now".  Oddly enough, I though "Fun It" was alright.

I agree. Killer (and Theme 1) were the tracks that got me into VDGG, and I still love them both.

I think some of you here are being too severe, songs like More Fool Me, Chemistry, Battle Of Epping Forest, Cans And Brahms, Have A Cigar, All In A Mouse's Night, Your Own Special Way etc may not be masterpieces, but saying that they ruin the album they are in is a bit too far.

Other of the mentioned songs such as The Return Of The Giant Hogweed, Get'Em Out By Friday, Wot Gorilla? or VDGG's Killer simply leave me perplex since I find them outstanding, but ok I guess that's a matter of taste...

An example of song I can surely agree with is Fun It in Queen's Jazz (personally I find More Of That Jazz much more decent even if surely no masterpiece either).

Please Mr Postman on With The Beatles. That song just makes me gag.

Jamaica Jerk-Off on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. For similar reasons.

Prelude: Song of the Gulls on Islands. Fripp was a weak composer back then, particularly outside of rock music. '73 is a different story.

Hats Off to Roy Harper on Led Zeppelin III is another obvious one. Ugh.

If Everyone Was Listening on Crime of the Century. Not bad, but dull, and on an album with seven perfect songs.

No, I think Roy's singing was an improvement actually. I've heard demos where Roger sings it, not as dynamic at all. Not to mention the live performances where Waters is very much struggling to get it right, but doesn't really.

Anybody a fan of Dog's Life from Octopus? I've never been a big fan of the song and Phil's vocals are a little irritating to be quite honest. I don't know, it sort of spoils the album for me along with A Cry For Everyone. I love the instrumental prowess of that song, but I don't really like the verses and choruses

CSN&Y's 'Almost Cut My Hair' from Deja Vu is both good and funny; certainly didn't ruin one of the finest albums of the early 70s.

Ok, The Lamb may be the best album ever, but the Waiting  Room just sucks. I like improv or jam recordings, but this track is just boring.
