Great band, with one of the greatest vocalists that ever walked the earth, but I don't think there is too much genuine prog- the proggiest moment I've ever heard by them is 'Spanish Caravan', but I don't think songs like 'The End' or 'Light My Fire' are progressive just because they are long.

I suppose you could argue they were 'proto prog' in a sense, though- they were definitely one of the first pop/rock bands to utilise keyboards.

The Beatles and The Stones are overrated??????

I like doors, but it suffered a little inflation, as it was played so much during my youth. I was at highschool, when Oliver Stone's "The Doors" movie was released in Finland, and this movie made their music very popular among the youth.

I think that Doors wasn't so popular at Finland as it was elsewhere, when Morrison was still alive?

I really can't understand why people say The Beatles are overrated- their contribution to music is undeniable, and still sounds great today, especially amongst assorted rip off merchants and dull indie bands of today...

One of my older brothers was in his teenager years a very good fan of The Doors. So, between  1970 and 1975 I listened to their albums a lot, including the albums The Doors recorded as a trio (after Morrison`s death):"Other Voices" (1971) and "Full Circle" (1972) (both since a  long time ago out of print despite being good albums; it seems that they are available on CD in Russia, but they are  "unauthorized releases", bootlegs).

Morrisson was a big influence on my late teenagehood, As I had read "Noone here gets out alive" (which Oliver Stone used for his movie some 12 years later), but reading further books (most notably Stephen Davies) , I think that he was deranged enough and borderline asshole (especially on Densmore ..... and Krieger) , but lacked the most elementary respect for a lot of people.

Can you blame the man, as he had an admiral for a father and this was Vietnam times, though?

Well, it seems to me that you are a Psychiatrist or a Psychologist. Maybe this is not the Forum to comment these things, but maybe you are talking about Morrison being a "borderline", or maybe  that he had a "Borderline Personality Disorder", or  maybe I`m understanding wrongly your comment!

I think that Morrison had several problems in his life and in his behaviour.But I don`t like Oliver Stone`s movie about The Doors and the way  he describes Morrison with the acting of Val Kilmer. In 1997 I read in an English  rock magazine (now defunct) called "VOX" an interview with Ray Manzarek. He was asked about this movie and he said that it is "crap". I also read in the Internet that Stone worked with John Densmore about the script for the film, and that Densmore wrote a book about his life with The Doors, and that he also described Morrison`s behavior as Stone did in the movie. This led to some problems between Densmore and the other ex-members of The Doors who also didn`t like the way Morrison was described by Desnmore in his book. So, it was one of the reasons why Densmore is not playing with them. Another reason is that Densmore didn`t like that Krieger and Manzarek were using the name "The Doors" anymore, so there were some legal problems between Densmore and the other two, and the new line-up of the band is now called "The Doors of the XXI Century".

By using borderline I meant as limit . Although I admired him greatly and still think of him as a poet , and a half genious , his cocky attitude would severely bother me nowadays. He cwould be no more than the OAsis Gallagher bros. But he did write the book on obnoxious rock stars

As for Densmore, He would've been part of the The Doors reunion tour had the other guys not left him sidetracked as he had health problems , had to be operated . Manzarek and Krieger did not want to postpone and wait for him, took on another drummer. This pissed off Densmore who then tried to stop them.

Then came in the Morrison family , trying to recuperate the fame and money by also stopping the use of name The Doors. This has to be the most scandalous behaviour from estranged family ever. Even Hendrix estates fights are less scandalous than that.

As Stone's movie , it was not succesful, but it was also dumb to even try to romance the life of a band so well documented.

I agree with the opinion that Doors are one of the psych/proto-prog bands, since they first popped up in 1967. I think it was likely for them to go into prog completely, had Morrison not died, of course otherwise was also possible.

I love light my fire since the day I first heard it. It has one of the most beautiful organ-guitar jams made on rock scene ever. (no matter if it's prog or not, besides, you can find many other prog-like songs in their discography)

The aspect what I don't like about them is that they get too bluesy sometimes, which is also true for Led Zep, Hendrix, and even Zappa.

Those who mentioned albums upstairs: you might want to check out The Soft Parade, which is definitely an unusual doors album!

P.S. :I believe Doors are more prog than Asia and Barclay James Harvest for most of the time!!!

I`m sure that I read in the Internet the commentaries about why Densmore is not in the line-up of "The Doors of the XXI Century". Anyway, I can`t remember now where I read them. It was a long time ago. Maybe two years ago.

I also remember that Stewart Copleand, the drummer who replaced Densmore after the "VH1 Storytellers" TV programme also sued Manzarek and Krieger after being "fired" from the line-up. He was replaced by another drummer whose name I don`t remember now.
