For me the exact opposite: my mind says Tommy: better overall quality of the compositions. But my heart says Quadrophenia. The first 4 or 5 songs are FANTASTIC! And Keith Moon was a wonderful drummer. I'm playing air drums all the time while listening to him. And in matters of music I follow my heart , so Quadrophenia breaks away (sorry, Tour de France influence ) in the poll.

I voted Quadrophenia because it is my favorite album. The group plays so well on that album. Townshend with the windmill chords and intricate guitar work during the instrumentals, Entwistle for his bass lines during 5'15 and The Real Me, one word, awesome; Moon for incredible drum fills and his most precise work to date; and Daltrey for giving easily the best vocal performance in Love Reign O'er Me. When put together, my number 1 favorite album.

Quadrophenia is less prog (except for Love Or Reign ór Me) but it gets my vote. Movie is awesome, too!

Tommy will always be considered a classic.
Quadrophenia has had to endure the compar-
isons to 'Tommy' and grow on it's generations
audience over the years. I've noticed articles in
British magazines lately hailing it as a masterpiece.
but i can say that i don't remember people acting
like that, and the only song you'd be able to play
at a party (in calif. in 73) was 'the real me'.
but, yeah, as a prog primer for young kids,it has
depth and shadow, political and personal themes
and tons of sequencer ARP.
i vote for quadrophenia.

Exactly! That's why I'm going to vote for Quad. I believe it's been overwhelmed by the "monumental" Tommy, and very underrated. Not to mention the great concept.
Both albums should somehow have a place in the PA discography, IMHO. Any progger needs to have an idea of these magnificent albums, not just for the influence over prog itself, but also because of the great music!

But TOMMY gets my vote. It's ultimate rock opera. QUADROPHENIA is also very very good, but slightly loses to TOMMY.

Tough Choice. I actually saw "Tommy" the movie before I heard the actual album, and loved it. But, the album absolutely blew me away (and I was only 10 at the time). I heard "Quadrpphenia" a couple of years later, and was blown away by that. So, which is better? I just can't make that choice.

Both are albums in my all-time top 10. I prefer the songs from Tommy, but Quadrophenia has much better production. If Tommy had been produced the same way, it would be probably my favorite album of all time.

Tommy is fantastic, but very hyped. I have only heard a couple of songs
from Quardophenia, but I like them better than most of the songs on
Tommy, so I voted Quadrophenia.

I'd be interested to hear Pete Townsend's opinion on this. Tommy probably made him more money, but I gotta believe Quadrophenia was a more challenging accomplishment. It seems Tommy is more of an album geared to creating hits and was more based in sixties stye music where as Quad was a true progression (if you will) for the band.

The Who are my favorite band, and this is a tough choice. "Underture" or "Quadrophenia"?! "We're Not Gonna Take It" or "Love Reign O'er Me"?! Wowzers, both those albums are fantastic. Quad got a little bit too repetitive at points for me, and Tommy just holds a special place in my heart.

Quadrophenia, hands down. Tommy is the more famous work, and it is one of the greatest albums of all time and a standard which all concept albums are compared to. However, Quadrophenia represents the band's high water mark in terms of musicianship (Who's Next was the lyrical opus). Roger's vox are his best; Pete actually solos and does so with simultaneous finesse and brute strength; John's bass on the whole album, particularly Real Me, Punk and the Godfather, and 5:15, is his best which is saying something; and Moonie manages to focus his skin-bashing into a groovy yet no less vicious beat.
I'm a bit biased towards the Who since I believe John is the greatest bassist ever and that every other member is one of the top ten is their particular field (Townshend for songwriting, not guitar though he makes my top 20 for influence), but nobody can deny their talent. I have tix to see them tomorrow night and I'm pumped despite the loss of the greatest rythmn section in R&B
