Let me get this straight: There are 100 top prog albums listed. Santana, Miles, & Focus(hamberger concerto). BUT not even ONE ELP album is in there? Who is compiling this list and what are they smoking? I gotta get out of here...

it's the average of everyone's votes, weighted towards ze collabs and reviewers. but you're right, it's weird that ELP ain't up there - maybe a lot of people think they've dulled as the years have past, become less relevant?

They are not compiled but based on the reviews on this site. Each review has a one to five star rating.

Come back....Baby come back
You've only had the one post!
BTW, in this monkey's eye, there is far better out there than ELP, and the Top 100 reflects that (cue a mighty backlash from disgruntled ELP fans )

It's not only question of ELP. For example, the TOP30 includes crossover pop band like Supertramp, but no Gentle Giant, who is seen as genre-defining band by many.
I believe most collaborators and special reviewers (others don't really matter) agree that ELP belongs to the very top of prog as a whole, but their albums are somewhat inconsistent, and for that reason they seldom get higher rating than 4 stars, and that is not enough to qualify to TOP100. A "Best of ELP" album would get there with ease.

I would agree that the (basic) list could be without crossover (like its without proto/related) , but that wouldent actualy change a lot. would move "glass house" up a few spots, but would remove http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=4893" rel="nofollow - Ommadawn , a very "prog" album in my book. If we forget about http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=19282" rel="nofollow - Kind of Blue ( ), i think the list is great.
Some album in top 100, i dont know, some i dont like, but still, very much as i would expect it to be.
Im more surprised TOOL is not in top 80, than ELP not in top 100, after all TOOL is one of the major new bands,
giving Prog a new an wider following. With a truely prog aproach, but still with a music and energy that is very much
present times.
Even thoug ELP was a major prog band back then, they sound way more outdated today, than most other top 70's bands. At the same time they havent made those super albums that Yes Tull Genesis Crimson Floyds Gentle G, made in the 70's, so its only natural, they are in the 2nd layer now, allmost 40 years later.

I like ELP a lot. Better than most of the stuff on the top 100. That said, they aren't quite as good as Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd.... They are corny, yes, they are half-baked, yes, but they do some great stuff.
I particularly like their albums Emerson Lake & Powell and Black Moon. Black Moon they almost seem serious.

Most people consider their albums to be very good and even ground breaking, but nowhere near as many people consider them to be one of the all time great bands in the way that Yes, Genesis, Krimson, Tull, Floyd and Rush are.

Yes, ELP should be there over Floyd, Tull, at least their first cd. He doesn't surprise me that their not on that list considering all the negative criticism over their bombastic style. I give more importance to their 4 stars ratings for the first 4 albums.

I'm surprised there isn't any ELP in the list, but that's the way the reviews have gone. ELP maybe have relatively few fans here compared to Genesis and Yes. That's no ones fault. It's just the way it is.
It took me along time to warm to ELP.
Maybe now I have, I should pull my finger out and review all their albums...
Let's have an ELP bomb. Everyone review BSS and give it five stars (regardless of what you may really think about it) That way they'll have an album in the top 100, and we can avoid people moaning about it in the future..
Edit: I've been listening to Trilogy in the car over the weekend. That's the album that should be in the top 100, imo!

If you filter down to Symph only they come in at 18th, 25th, 38th & 39th. That feels about right to me but what the F do I know?

I respect ELP a lot, they are an iconic band that represents a high point in the history of Symphonic Prog, but not a real fan of them.
I believe they reached their peak too soon with Trilogy and BSS and then IMO everything was downhill, with a couple of good albums.
But surely they did very good stuff, and Black Moon is an excellent album that gave me hopes for a re-birth that never happened.
