I love actors from both groups, but I thought I'd make a poll about it.
In case you are wondering what I'm contrasting:
Actors who Act are those who are different in almost every film they make. Examples of this would include Daniel Day Lewis, Nichole Kidman, Johnny Depp, Tim Curry, and Heath Ledger.
Actors who Are are those who are just themselves in nearly every film. Examples of this would include Morgan Freeman, Adam Sandler, Will Smith, Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson.

The first option. Sandler was fun when I was nine. Have I gotten more demanding or has he gotten worse? Both, probably.
My favorite actors are those that act in such a way as to seemingly live as their characters. Thornton did it in Sling Blade, McGoohan did it in The Prisoner, and Jack Nicholson did it in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Some of the actors who are can also act, too, and quite good, but there's little demand for that.

I love assumed Actors who Are who do movies that show that they are Actors who Act. If you know what I mean.

Because he's the first person to spring to my mind when I read beyond the original post question.
Rob - I don't judge the entirety of option two on Sandler. I just prefer guys like Nicholson over guys like Will Smith. I'd take Harrison Ford over any recurring Apatow actor, and I'd definitely take the serious minded Carrey over Morgan Freeman, even if he is a legendary narrator.

Sure, but I thought the film itself sucked.
Remember, I'm not painting these actors' entire careers- just the bulk of their performances.

And the bulk of Sandler used to be 'dumb geek without social skills overcoming silly themes and saving the day with his lovable oafishness and dirty jokes'. Quintessential example? Billy Madison
Now it's 'arrogant horseface getting massive loads of sex and women because they are paid a lot of money to pretend he is witty and spectacular'. Quintessential example? Zohan.

I liked him when he wasn't aware of his own abilities, like with Mary and Meet the Parents, but Carrey has him swamped, even on humor, with Me, Myself, and Irene. :O

Irene sucked.. that was one of Carrey's least funny films to that point, and it's when I stopped paying attention to every movie he made-- Stiller on the other hand just kept getting better; Zoolander, Parents, Tenenbaums, Tropic Thunder

At first I thought it was going to be something like actors who actually act vs. ones who are just themselves pretty much, but being recorded.
Have to go with those who act.
It's just...better Not saying they aren't good but I usually dislike those who have the same role every time. Even if I like them, Ricky Gervais is one that comes to mind, I do get kinda bored seeing the same shtick every time.

Johnny Depp is a decent actor but I wouldn't put him in the first category. He just plays a weirdo in every film. While they may read different on paper he basically acts the same in every one of his films. Not his fault, just wouldn't say any of his roles are actually stretches over previous roles.
Can we get some love for character actors? The Stephen Roots and Charles Napiers of the world that are down there in the trenches, holding the films together, so that the "stars" can shine.

Harrison Ford fan here and he used to do character acting till he got to Fugitive, Regarding Henry and Firewall. He plays action heroes and romantic leads but still acts similar in all. So does Pacino, and DeNiro. Classic method actors.
Voted actors who act for this reason
Still have time for Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman who are actors who are.

I might vote for the second option because I'm pretty sure my favorite actor and living god, Bill Murray, fits into that category.
