Both bands are somewhat quirky but I prefer the quirkiness of Beardfish over the quirkiness of The Mars Volta.

This is like the third pairing in a row that I haven't been able to vote.  I have both "Deloused on the Comatorium" and one of the "Sleeping in Traffic" CD's and neither inspired me to further explore the band.  I know there are a lot of people on here that love each of these bands, but neither of them move me.

Beardfish, only because they're the under dogs. TMV have also been bothering me, both with the dissatisfaction of their last album, and that they're taking forever to come out with a new album.

From what I've heard of Beardfish, they're not bad. However, TMV sounds more fresh and exciting with the Latin influences and what not. Also, I don't think Beardfish has anything that can match De-Loused in the Comatorium.

But it is a competition. It really shouldn't be. The most innovative and consistent band in 20 years verses a good retro prog band. The Mars Volta should leave Beardfish in the dust. But no - once again, the PA hoards pile in in droves to vote, when they clearly don't listen to both bands, an important criteria if we're supposed to be judging between the two.

Don't just vote for the band you've heard of. If you can only say you listen to one of the two bands, don't vote. You're the reason that this competition is already decided.

True this will often of the time be the case.

But mostly the amount of support for Symphonic/retro vs. Everything else makes it pre decided.

The problum with the more adventurous stuff like TMV and SGM is that by its nature its going to alienate as many people as it impresses, maybe even more, where as Symphonic/Retro/Neo is usually very safe and guaranteed to be inoffensive to most prog fans.

I only like TMV's debut, and the only Beardfish album enjoy is Sleeping in Traffic 2.

But The Mars Volta are a forward thinking band, even though they based their sound on King Crimson a lot, and Beardfish is just Gentle Giant-influenced wannabe 70's hard rock.

But Beardfish are not a retro-prog band. If their latest album Mammoth is retro prog, then tell me where metal-ish riffs and growling show up in the 70s? Theyve also incorporated other modern elements as well. They also seem to take more Scandinavian influences than other "retro-prog" bands do. I accept that bands like the Flower Kings, Spock's Beard, Neal Morse, etc are retro, but Beardfish seem to be doing the opposite.

I agree about The Mars Volta though...

Of course, I forgot to say they were influenced by Zappa and KC too, but they're not that unique. I frankly like them better than TMV but the latter is so wilder and fresher.

At a glance, it looks like TMV

Out of all "retro" bands, i can honestly say that i think they are the only band that still sounds fresh and exciting.

Both Sleeping in Traffic albums and Destined Solitaire sound innovative and fun to me, their Gentle Giant influence is their but what's wrong with influences?

Also, i agree about their accessibility. Unlike The Mars Volta, they don't have any aspects that can alienate the listener. So they will easily harvest more votes.

Though i think The Mars Volta should win, i'm unsure about the results.

Some honest criticism:

Next time try to match bands with similar popularity and "oddness" (i'm lacking a better word..)

Having bands like Sleeptime Gorilla Museum go against any "mainstream" prog act will have obvious results. So matches like..

SGM vs  Art Zoyd, might be a bit better.

This is not quite but almost as exciting as SB vs. GY!BE (and for god's sake don't start complaining about the outcome of that poll).

God damn, two of my favourite bands. I won't vote when they're this close.

Beardfish must win. BTW, I just broke the tie, and to be honest, I'm kinda drooling about Beardfish winning this tough match. I like TMV though, but I think they lost their 'magic' after Frances The Mute. Beardfish has only grown with time, their last 4 albums are personal favourites, with Destined Solitaire as the shiniest star.

You're the reason that this competition is already decided.

dude....  more people on this site have heard TMV than  Beardfish

I doubt there  are many votes from ppl who have heard Beardfish and not TMV
Probably more votes from people who love TMV and have never heard Beardfish

I respect TMV for being different but I don't like to listen to them

just because you think they are better does not automatically make them better

Beardfish is not a copycat band in any way and deserves respect as well

It's tied? Really????? I sense that Volta might be a George Bush band, with people voting against them, rather than for Beardfish. anyway, Volta! The Mars Volta!! Why aren't they ahead by 20?

Did I not say they were good? I have all their albums and listen to them regularly.

And the only reason I am annoyed is the fact that this competition has already been decided. PT will win because, let's face it' more people have heard them. People vote for the band they've heard, even if they have never heard the other band.

I also agree that many people hate TMV for being popular with a mainstream audience, so I suspect that people are voting against them for that very reason.

It's such a shame that one of these two bands has to lose that early...I hope Beardfish wins this...they may not be as innovative as TMV, but their music is a much greater pleasure to listen to in my opinion.

You don't need to put out full-blown copies to be a retro artist.

I'm just saying their influences are not as blatantly obvious as some other artists seem to have a problem with (well, besides their Zappa influence)

Maybe so, but I remember being tired when I typed up that first comment.

I don't think TMV are not guilty of showing their influences either, it's just they take more risks so it's hard to tell sometimes. But even as much as I enjoy TMV, sometimes it's like "well, there'es the latin part" or "the funky part", or "here's the King Crimson scale-crazy section" etc...

Anyway, I see Beardfish is finally taking the lead!

Just so you all can rest assure these games aren't decided by mere clickers, Mars Volta leads Beardfish roughly 20 to 17, in terms of votes expressed.

I must confess, I voted for Beardfish largely to get the appalling The Mars Volta out - but the poll provoked me to have a real listen to Beardfish, and the more I hear, the more I like them. So it's now a very positive vote for Beardfish.

I voted for TMV yesterday, and wrote a really long boring post why which I didn't bother posting, though I'm not really a fan of either. I had thought TMV would take this quite easily -- shows what little I know.
