This year I've bought three Pendragon releases at a local CD store.  Passion, of course, is new this year. Madfish records has also re-released Pure and Believe.  All were reasonably priced and were not special ordered.

Knowing that Madfish (a U.K. label, owned by Snapper Music) has re-issued a few Marillion (among others) I had hoped that the same store would carry them as well; but no luck.  So I decided to ask about it last night.  Apparenly the Pendragon discs are in their system as domestic releases, while the Marillion ones are listed as imports.  I know the Pendragon ones specifically had Madfish as the label.  It sounded like the Marillion ones were listed as Snapper.

Anyway, I is confuzzled.  I wonder if something specific was done for the Pendragon ones that was not for Marillion.  And why.  I don't expect that anyone here will know, but it can't hurt to ask.

And then there's Kscope and Peaceville (both are Snapper labels).  The new Steven Wilson is a Kscope release and its also a "domestic" U.S. release (at a bargain price, even then!).  And I know the store has quite a few other Kscope releases at domestic prices (Porcupine Tree, The Pineapple Thief and Lunatic Soul, among others).  Yet they never seemed to have the new Anathema.  They only got that one when it was released by an actual U.S. label, The End Records.  Peaceville seems to be similar.  Sometimes domestic, sometimes only as import.

Honestly, I'm only guessing about Kscope and Peaceville.  Maybe their entire catalog has been available as "domestic", but only soon after an albums release, so I just happened to be too late for the store to have them in stock.  I should ask, but didn't think about it at the time.

Anyway, any insights are welcome.

Well I will guess it has to do with who the CD store is using as a supplier/vendor. The "wholesaler" that they use may not have certain artists/labels available and you are probably right......It has to do with the designation of "domestic vs import".
I have asked several of my record store owners why they don't get vinyl issues of Porcupine Tree, SW, Genesis.....I think it is because they are not sure if they will sell. I asked about albums by Riverside for example ,CD or vinyl, and the owner could not find it on his "suppliers website".....again probably because it is an import.
The other thing is most of this stuff is available to the common buyer on the internet, my price is about the same as what the record store owner would pay and they know that.
Although I would pay a few bucks more just to know that if the record is damaged I can return it to the store much easier than if I had ordered online.....Sending things back purchased online is a major hassle.
