I have listend to a lot of Toto and alot of music featuring guitar (duh) and i stil come back to my same conclusion. Steve Lukather was a pioneer in heavy guitar-playing in 80s music. he's speed and accuracy did give a edge to the band and he's aporach on guitar made Toto stand out among the AOR bands not as bluesy hard rock as Foreigner or smooth yet blistering style of Journeys Neil Schon.

from this videos

you see Lukather showing his double picking style which he developed back in the 78, and the way he developed it is similar to that same use the guitarists in Iron Maidon does, i just feel that Steve is very negelected in metal (not in rock) for he's role in developing techniques, just listen to 84 Toto release Isolation. their is ALOT of double picking and it is a different apraoch then most 80s bands both AOR and Neo Prog, and both of those generes are influentual to classic progressie metal (even if you like it or not).

so my bold statement is Steve Lukather is the first guitarist to perfectly blend the 60s, 70s and 80s guitar styles into the heavy prog metal style both in sound and in versetality, just listen to his tone and trye to imagine it in Dream Theater or Queensryche or even Opeth. their are reasons why Derek Sherinian wants he's guitarstyle on his albums...just saying
