You should make a CD that has a good representation of prog from all era's. As for me... I don't really make those CD's. But I'll come up with a list when I can think of some logical answers. -------------

that's exactly what I did. at the time I burned the cd I didn't know much about prog. if you ntice I did what "snow dog" suggested - 8 tracks only. anyway instead of VDGG and gentle giant I put 2 long songs that I thought to be prog by Boston and the Scorpions. later I learned there was probably no relation. the songs I collected for the next collection in the meantime are: VDGG - Killer ------------- the contracts of my youth expire |

Where have you all been? I've been doing this for some time now. Make my own covers and everything. Most are double cd's. A few triple and quadruple cd's, all with themes and my own titles. This is the only way to listen as I rarely like every track on a commercial prog album. There are exceptions of course, but my own compilations is the way to go for me. Here a few examples: Zeuhl Rule: 3 cd various bands in sub-genre. In PROG We Trust: 2 cd general prog compilation Prog-Rock at the Beeb: 4 cd of great BBC studio and concert tracks from 1969 to present Sirens of Valhalla...A Scandinavian Prog-Rock Sampler: 2 cd-Norway and Sweden's finest Prog-Goddess: 2 cd compilation featuring female lead singers Prognosis: title an obvious lift, but another 2 cd general prog compilation

I think there should be songs from the different subgenres of prog. So here's what I'd make of it:
Genesis - Firth of Fifth ( 9 min ) [ Symphonic Prog ] Jethro Tull - Hunting Girl ( 5 min) [ Folk Prog ] Hawkwind - Psychedelic Warlords ( 7 min ) [ Space Prog ] Dream Theater - Metropolis pt 1 ( 9 min ) [ Prog Metal ] Caravan - Winter Wine ( 8 min ) [ Canterbury ] Neu! - Hallogallo ( 10 min ) [ Kraut Rock ] Marillion - The Web ( 9 min ) [ Neo-Prog ] Premiata Forneria Marconi - Impressioni di Settembre ( 6 min ) [ Italian Prog ] Mahavishnu Orchestra - Dawn ( 5 min ) [ Fusion ] Rush - Tom Sawyer ( 5 min ) [ Art Rock ] Godspeed You Black Emperor! - 09-15-00 (Part Two) ( 6 min ) [ Experimental / Post-Rock ] That clocks in at just a little under 80 minutes so it would fit on one CD. OK, there's nothing of Zeuhl there, but that's not really a genre in my books anyway.. the songs represent their subgenres pretty well, I guess. |

| Many of Jan Akkerman's solo albums have much appeal to me. Yet, on each release, there is a mix of, lighter, or heavier tunes - even baroque and they don't always blend well together. So I burned a couple of CDs compiling similar styles on each. That is a much more preferable mix to me - also keeps Akkerman in my "good books". |

Aye. It's rather a "boisterous" mix. With the exception of Ozric Tentacles and parts of Taal, it's a relentlessly loud, jazzy and complex mix. Bloody good fun to belt out your speakers whilst doodling or scribbling ideas for a play, as I was earlier today. |

Nero Burning Rom, for example have a fascility to burn over 80 minutes. It doesnt always work though and depends on your hardware and your blanks I guess. I was the other way around. Liked the flashiness of Hybris to begin with, but grew to appreciate the maturity of Epilog more.
What about 6?
I can't make up my mind about the Flower Kings. Don't know whether I like them or not. They're a strange one.
This one doesn't work for me. I find it a bit ... amateurish.
