Okay, I'm going to spend a few bucks and purchase some more prog albums. My first love is all styles of jazz and 20th century "classical" music (what else can we call it - concert or symphonic music?). I want to explore some more prog. Some groups I have include Yes, Jethro Tull, Kansas. I've heard some prog Genesis but don't own any albums. I've had a Rush CD, but it went to the bad for some reason. The next few albums I'd like to buy include: 1) Yes- Closer to the Edge 2) King Crinsom- In the Court of King Crimson 3) Rush - 2112 4) Pink Floyd - ? 5) Genesis- ? I left 4 & 5 blank because I'm not sure which one to start with....maybe Dark Side with Floyd but what about Genesis? Is that a good Pink Floyd choice to begin with? Any suggestions or comments will be appreciated. I don't know how deep I want to get into this because I'm so devoted to jazz; however, I'll go where ever good music happens to be, and I've been enjoying the Yes albums that I have which includes Fragile and The Yes Album ( I also enjoy Magnification to an extent.)

Pink Floyd, personally i would recommend "Wish you were Here" as a start. Dark Side of the moon is also great. For genesis, my first album was Foxtrot, and I recommend you to start there, but also "selling egland by the pound" is great. |

Yeah, what they said, start with Foxtrot or Selling England for Genesis, and either Animals or Wish You Were Here. By the way, have you tried any Canterbury, or Jazz Fusion, since you're a big jazz fan? Some great purchases would include the following bands: Hatfield and the North, Brand X, Bruford, Soft Machine (from Third on), and Gilgamesh. Also, if you're a big fan of classical, I would suggest checking out the Enid or Clearlight. Both very classical sounding prog rock bands, with little or no vocals. ------------- I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you? |

I've heard of only a few of the fusion bands listed on this website like Return to Forever, M. Orchestra, and Dixie Dregs. I've been a big fan of Pat Metheny for about 12 years now. I also love Al di Meola on the guitar. Chick Corea is awesome. There are others - Whether Report, for instance - that I enjoy.

Tonight, I finally took the plunge and bought Floyd's Dark Side......heard some of the song already. I'll have to listen to it a few more times before I can make a judgement on it. "Money"....gosh, who hasn't heard that song.

For a jazz fan, I must reiterate the point made by The Doctor: try out
some Canterbury, I think you'd really dig it. Good albums to start: Caravan - In The Land Of Grey And Pink National Health - self-titled debut Hatfield & The North - either self-titled debut or The Rotter's Club Soft Machine - Third Matching Mole - Self-titled debut Gong - Shamal (a later album by them with different musicians and sound, but this is jazzier than the psychedelic/space sound of their earlier albums) Try 'em out, what can go wrong? As a jazz (especially fusion) lover myself have you heard/do you own these?
Any of the above listed that you have not heard should be HIGH on your list as next purchases. Take it from another huge fan of jazz, these are great ones in the more jazz/fusion and progressive areas. Oh, and as far as Genesis goes, I would definitely start with Trespass but I am in the minority. Don't go with Foxtrot though. Just three guys too! You should hear the new CD! It is fantastic. I saw these guys in a small club in January opening for Eric Norelander. They blew him off the stage. Been trying to get them in PA for three months now.

| I think Foxtrot is Genesis' best but I don't know if it's the best starting point. I might even say "Nursery Cryme" would be a good album to start with being the beginning of the great Genesis recordings in my opinion. |

As a Pink Floyd fan, I usually tell people to go with a route similar to how I discovered them. Dark Side of the Moon The Wall Meddle Animals Wish You Were Here Atom Heart Mother I personally prefer the early stuff (Piper through Atom Heart Mother), but almost all of their albums are great (even AMLOR and Division Bell have a few good songs). Depends what sort of twentieth century classical music you like.
If you enjoy Wagner, you will love MAGMA and other bands of the zeuhl family. If you like Stravinsky and dissonance, many of the RIO bands (HENRY COW and ART ZOYD in particular) are likely to appeal. SHUB NIGGURATH was an interesting and extremely experimental band fusing both approaches, but their music is far too minimalist and unpredictable for many ears. |

Ah, I totally agree with that. To me, buy all of Genesis' albums or download them from the year 1970-Trail, all of them are just excellent piece of Symphonic Prog. Instead of Adagio, I'd recommend you pick up some Symphony X, Symphony X just is a better band IMO. |

Thanks guys for all your suggestions.....keep them coming.... These are some prog CDs I've bought recently: 1) Pink Floyd- Dark Side 2) Yes- Fragile, The Yes Album, Magnification, (Re)Union 3) King Crimson- In the Court 4) Dream Theater- Octavarium & Changing of Seasons 5) Traffic- the one about high heeled boys, didn't care for really but I'll listen again. 6) Rush- 2112 7) Kansas- I already had a lot of Kansas but I was able to grab the Monolith album 8) Mahavishnu Orchestra - probably the best album listed here; MO was awesome. I was already familiar with John M. 9) Weather Report- already had Mysterious Stranger but I listed it anyway. 10) Chick Corea and Electrik Band - (of Return to Forever fame) this band is awesome. ...I'm sure I'm missing a CD but I've just started with this. Got to admit that I'm very interested in the so-called jazz-rock, fusion, whatever you want to call it., and prog metal. Metal has always seemed sort of cheesy to me even though I liked the hair bands of the 80's. I'm impressed with Dream Theater and I plan on purchasing Tool, Symphony X, and Pain of Salvation next. Also, Closer to the Edge by Yes is high on my list as well as Chick Corea's new CD. I'm also getting into early jazz....Jelly Roll Morton, Bix Beiderbecke, Bunny Berigan, etc. This is another bygone era that most people have written off as dead. you still haven't purchased any Genesis... try Foxtrot or Nursery Cryme first if you like Dream Theater try Symphony X: V The Mythology Suite, Pain Of Salvation: Remedy Lane and Shadow Gallery: Legacy. If you still haven't got Close to the Edge, its a MUST! Happy listening, and welcome to the site... ------------- Music has always been a matter of energy to me.
