I just finished watching a very fine documentary on the German groups of the late 60's and 70's and am now interested in seeking some music, particularly from Amon Duul and Faust. So, what's a good starting place for someone who is in love with Can's "Tago Mago", but is fairly unaware of anything else in the subgenre?

I really love Wolf City by Amon Duul II and am not really a Krautrock fanatic. It has lovely melodies mixed an original psychedelic twist, among some eastern stuff:

But maybe you want to a more daring challenge, and start with something like Yeti, which is way more improvised, or this:

Not much aware of Faust.

Faust from their first album (they start out very experimental then get more 'normal' latter):

Neu! (formed by two ex-members of Kraftwerk):

Swiss band Brainticket:

Can and Amon Duul II obviously, although those seem to be the first two kraut bands most people check out. Also look into Popol Vuh, Guru Guru and Ash Ra Tempel.

If you want to check out Faust, you should get their IV album. That got me into the sound of Faust.

Try some early Tangerine Dream too - Alpha Centauri is a wonderful album.

I have "Rubycon", "Stratosfear", and "Phaedera" ... how do these compare to "Alpha Centuri"?
