In the world of prog often the better bands that
journey into the progressive arena are excluded
because one they dont stick around to make a bunch
of more useless prog and two get tagged with other
titles, whether pop, aor, avant garde, whatever.
Meanwhile probably at least 70% of what is accepted
as progressive rock is a bunch of half wits that cant
play any better than me and create experimental
noise that amounts to a waste of time and money if
you are curious and purchase it.
Their should be intelligence and musical guidelines
to what is accepted as progressive rock. Many, many
are cashing in on your curiosity, boredom and
shouldnt be allow an avenue to promote their lack of
talent!
WHATS YOUR OPIONION?

To prove your point, you may want to post a link to a mp3 that shows us how you can play ...

I probably buy around 100 cd's a year, and all of those (with very rare exceptions) are in the prog category.  However, very rarely do I get a CD that I absolutely dislike.  I usually find at least something on a cd I can appreciate.  On the other hand, I do quite a bit of research, read reviews, look at the bands website (if they have one), a subscription to progression magazine, and so on.  With enough forethought, you can purchase music that suits what you are looking for.  Certain key words will turn me off of a band immediately ("noodling"; "ambient"; "electronica"; "new age"; "improvisational"; "jam band"; and so on).  Doing this allows me to avoid most things that I would consider crap that should not really be included in the progressive genre.  But there is still no way to avoid the occasional crap.  So what I do when I get a crap CD is look up contact information for the band and send them a bill for both the purchase price of the CD and my billable rate ($175 and hour) multiplied by the length of the CD for my time wasted.  It's a futile effort.  Never once have I received money for this, but it makes me feel better.

I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

Applies to music:

The more vocals and lyrics the more popular.

The catchier the hook the more popular.

The better the music the more is the music better.
