I think the real stand-out track there is Elaine...  I don't know if you've got Rainmaker, but almost everyone HATES that track...  but if you look at it from the viewpoint of it discussing an ex-girlfriend or something, it's suddenly got the single-most hilarious lyrics EVER.

Here she comes again, smiling like a horse
God he was asleep on that day she was born
Riding her bike with the sun in her eyes
finding her way in a world that still smiles

Here she comes again, dancin like clown
God he went astray on the day she arrived
she's stumbling ashore, like a pig in a pond
Ready to fly, ready to die

The world is a cruel affair
if you don't dance to a common beat
People are cruel Elaine, if you don't fit the bill
The world is so cold out there
if you dance to a different beat
people are scared, believe me Elaine

Here she comes again, dressing like a clown
God she's different, puts a smile on your face

(chorus)

Here she comes again, smiling like a horse
God he was asleep on that day she was born
Riding her bike with the sun in her eyes
finding her way in a world that still smiles

The world is a cruel affair
if you don't dance to a common beat
People are cruel Elaine, if you don't fit the bill
The world is so cold out there
if you dance to a different beat
but, people are scared, believe me Elaine

They say it's the inside that matters
now that's a lie, what a lie

Fly by strange little bird fly by......................fly home

The number one album for this occasion is of course:

Peter Hammill - Over

The whole album deals with the topic of breaking up from various angles.

Peter Hammill's 'Over' album is an obvious one that comes to mind, especially the tracks 'Betrayed' and 'Time Heals', but every track is full of the misery of heartbreak. Although lyrically depressing, it's a great album.

not bl***dy KISS again ... please!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, Script would be an excellent choice ... then add a bottle of wine ... or two ... or three

maybe also ... IQ The Wake? or Ever? They are about loss & love I believe?

Damn ! I wish I'd thought of those ...

I would  also add from In Absentia Lips of Ashes ... Gravity Eyelids ... Trains ... Prodigal ... not specifically about break-ups but rather pleasantly melancholic

It was Steve Hacketts guitar and beautiful atmospheric music that did it!

OK...this isn't really prog as it is after they sold their souls to become pop, but Genesis' Mama does it for me.  Other great breakup songs are Fish's Shadowplay; Script; again not really prog but BOC's Shooting Shark; Black Sabbath's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (oh wait, that's not a breakup song); oh and Marillion's Cinderella Search.

I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?
