I've spent the last few years spending a very very large part of my time researching progressive music. I started with Rush and Dream Theater, working my way, progressively (hehe) to bands such as Maudlin of the well and such. Along the way of course I picked up some favorites: Porcupine Tree, Beardfish, Spock's Beard, Ayreon, Karnivool, Riverside, and the likes.

There was one band, however, that impressed me and confused me beyond any other. That band was Pain of Salvation. We can talk about Roadsalt all we want, but up to Scarsick each album was a musical expression of ideas that reached into my very own humanity. The music and the meaning was confounding, and yet at the same time applicable to my life.

I, for one, am not usually into live albums, although I do appreciate the rare gem. I finally decided to obtain 12:5 since I was hungering for more PoS. After spending the last few weeks going through it, I can safely say THIS album is the pinnacle of progressive. This is my "prog". You can take away the "metal". Take away the harshness. Take away anything that could even be considered a gimmick. What Pain of Salvation gave on 12:5 was emotion in musical form. Each song taken to its base, and still stronger than ever.

Now, I am certainly not trying to say that any other band is inferior. I just wanted to express how impressed I am with this group, and with humanity itself, to be able to create something so beautiful.
