i'm just wondering about the rest of the world's opinion on this topic. i was having an argument with someone over this because he said that children of bodom is better than dream theater because they are more "badass". also, what does everyone think about cob guitarist alexi laiho dissing dt in the guitar world "virtuoso" issue.

DREAM THEATER!
Well, I haven't listened Children for ages... Alexi is a great
guitarist, but I don't like that constrast of death metal growling and
melodic riffs (Opeth is much better...)

Dream Theater, no doubt.
Pablo_P: Wouldn't really call CoB's growls for death metal growls, they sound more like the typical gøteborg/melodeath-growl vocal. It's more highpitched, "tinner", and not so "gutteral" and distorted as the typical death metal growls.

Who is Alexi Laiho? Seriously, why should anybody listen to what he says about Petrucci? Children Of Bodom is a decent metal band, but I doubt that there are many musicians out there that go to their concerts to watch them play. Go to any Dream Theater concert and watch the audience stand amazed when DT pull off their cunning stunts. I'd like to know what really great guitarist say about Petrucci - Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, Scott Henderson, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson ... to name but a few. I seriously doubt that Laiho is in the top 200 list of important guitarists.

What did he say about Dream Theater anyway?
Also, I'd definately go with Dream Theater. I've heard a few Children of Bodom songs, and sorry to any fans... but I really don't like them.

He basically said that Petrucci can't play ... at least not as good as him.
Have a look at that list, it's quite interesting:
http://www.emptywords.org/GuitarWorld_03-2004.htm - http://www.emptywords.org/GuitarWorld_03-2004.htm
I don't mind that Petrucci is at position 27, it's not a list that focusses on technique. What's interesting is that Laiho is at 97, closely followed by Michael Angelo Batio, and EVEN Sammy Hagar is better than him according to the list.

I've created a separate thread to dicuss the list:

Yes, you are right - I know some melodic death metal bands such as
Children, In Flames or Soilwork but it's not the music I listen all the
time I didn't know how to decribe that way of growlings... My english is not very excellent

Never could get into Children of Bodom and I don't think there's a lot there to get into anyway... 17th vote for DT.

And as for Alexi Laiho dissing Petrucci: if it's true Laiho's a cokehead, well then I don't really need to comment, do I?
If he isn't, let's put it this way: It's kinda fashionable among guitarists to bash Petrucci. And I don't remember hearing either an above-average solo from Laiho or an above-average song from COB. And from what I've heard they haven't really changed since I last listened to them. The ending to "Fatal Tragedy" alone rocks more than COB's second album and I'd trade all of Laiho's solos from that album for Petrucci's solo in that song.
But even if I'm wrong, it's stupid to diss a fellow musician like that and I really don't think Petrucci would say the same about Laiho.

how can you possibly compare these two bands?
CoB has even done a cover of The Final Countdown, they suck!

I think Alexi creates catchier and more interesting riffs than Petrucci
but Children of Bodom pretty much have a basic song structure. Petrucci
along with Dream Theater write much more progressive stuff and not to
mention much longer stuff. I idolize both of their styles of playing,
but Alexi is an 80's wild child and Petrucci went to school. I don't
think either one is any better than the other, but i'll say Petrucci
probably has a broader influence over Alexi.

"catchier AND more interesting" ... I think that the more interesting riffs are ALWAYS those which are less catchier. Petrucci is MUCH more interesting ... while Laiho is MUCH mre catchy.

Children of Bodom= Adults who act children
Dream Theater= Adults who SHRED!
Just' Kiddin' You really can't compare because Dream Theater is MILES better than ANYTHING COB has written.
Another thing: Alexi even said that the newest album will be RECYCLED stuff from the earlier albums, wow, thats creative.

I read the article in Guitar World with Steve Vai, Laiho, and Zakk Wylde on the cover. I had the pleasure of meeting Steve Vai in March when he toured here. I had him sign the magazine and I asked him about Laiho's comments regarding Petrucci. Steve said that Laiho's comments were "way out of line" and that Petrucci was an incredibly talented artist. He really did not appear to appreciate Laiho's comments at all. I wouldn't lose any sleep on who Alexi Laiho decides to diss. If Steve Vai doesn't care for the comments, then that's good enough for me!
