Sorry to re-open this can of worms.......

Any chance we can remove pre-release ratings and reviews?

For Goodness sake, they're still in the studio working on the album and people are rating already!

LOLLOLLOL

Cheers,

W x

Is it the new Dream Theatre album? It's even worse than their previous ones.

If we don't do anything, we may get closed down. That's the choice we have.

It would help if you linked to the album you are talking about.

The courts. It is not very likely, but in a very fluid scene where the law firms is moving about the net, we should already now establish some sound routines. So when the flood comes; we are as insured as your own house is insured.

.......... but this has been an ongoing debate in PA since you were a young delinquent.......... Wink

I really don't see why a justice system would ever care, even if a musician brought a suit against PA for some reason. Even if someone did bring a suit, it would be a jurisdictional headache to get to Max in Canada from wherever the musician is, unless Rush, GYBE, or Devin Townsend took personal offense for some reason. ;-)

Yes, I know this is something that has been discussed ad infinitum, and I don't understand why it's still an issue when the only benefit (not making the few people with legitimate promo copies wait a month before posting their review) is so small, but whatever.

I very much doubt anyone is every really going to go to the lengths of suing!!!!! for what? for why?

It's just annoying, even a 5* review......... it means that one the time comes umpteen people will jump on the band wagon and dismiss the ratings completely screaming fanboyism!!!

For info though, we have no intention of sending out advance review copies, there's plenty of time to review discuss after it's release!

We can stop any publishing of ratings and reviews before the release date. Then again; we do not have any access to a database which gives us these dates...... I believe. Neither do I believe such a database excist. It did 20 years ago though when I started out. The music business is incredible fractured at the moment with numerous of publishers/record labels. If we are sending out enquiry emails to everyone who may release something, we may be less popular than personal visits from Jehovah Witnesses and that even in the Pendragon HQ.

I really do not know how to stop ratings like that one.

Usually releases like this have their dates annouced. Block the ratings since the actual release date, problem solved.

I wonder if "blocking the ratings until release date" is actually manageable. There are hundreds of albums coming out every year. If M@x could add a date related lock on the album then it would still be hit and miss and some people do get advanced review copies.

Best to just pick up the obvious offenders and tackle it that way?

I am sitting on at least five advanced copies with release date. I have told the bands/labels that the reviews will be published on that date - or later - and they all agree with that. That self imposed policy solves that problem.

Managing this is hard.

Best option is to have an option in the EDIT/ADD album "Allow ratings and review" YES/NO for pre-release additions.

When a reviewer wants to rate it or review it, there is an option please contact ADMIN TEAM with a link to a forum , asking for Unlocking the album with reason. And content moderator can unlock if reason is approved .

Something like that ...

Any better idea ?

Sounds like a good idea overall, but the Add/Edit function is available to any users so anyone could unmark the album for reviewing. And I wouldn't want to lose the universal access to Add/Edit, non-collab users do a lot of helpful work on the discographies.

Motorpsycho must be a bit upset - the only band/album he hasn't given 5 stars to!

When I worked in a record store, it was not unusual to get promos before the album was released.
If someone received a copy of an album that way, would it be wrong to review it?

No, legitimate reviews of that type are fine. A rating without review on the other hand is just silly.

It's a two edge sword.

There are bands that might need the extra publicity, and if they know the reviewer is saying something nice, they will want that to help create the excitement. And just as we say that, someone else feels differently.

I do think that it is very fair, and that we should do this on the release date, as Torod suggests ... but that would be an honor system for each and everyone of us ... do we have one?

And while it is nice to see some outsiders add their "reviews", here is a case where ... we are here discussing it as slightly inappropriate, but we don't know if it was one of the band members that did that, while he/she is still excited about their latest piece.

Or we can pull a Pink Floyd ... play something in concert for over a year or two, and then not release it on the next album! That ought to get a few reviewers ticked! And some fans, too -- like me! I still don't think WYWH is that good an album compared to other things and work, and that Raving and Drooling was more fun to trip to, than the ensuing result.
