Hello! After lurking here for many months ( this site is very helpful & informative) I have decided to take the plunge & join as there aren't too many female proggers out there, not that I've seen anyway I have been collecting prog for a few years now (about 1500 cds in total) so here's a bit of an idea of what I like ... Classics like Yes; Genesis (esp. Gabriel era); Floyd; King Crimson ( up to 3oaPP); Tull (prefer 70's stuff) - saw them in concert last month here in Adelaide - excellent performance. also (random selection) ... Arena; Ayreon; Asia; The Enid, Renaissance; Karda Estra; Camel ( LOVE this band) Flower Kings; Tangent; Transatlantic; Karmakanic; Kaipa & Stolt solo projects; Pendragon, Arena, IQ, Pallas; Marillion(Hogarth & Fish eras) ; Pineapple Thief; RPWL; Echolyn; Pink Floyd; Porcupine Tree; No-Man ; Opeth; Eloy; Tangerine Dream, Mostly Autumn, Karnatakata; Magenta; Glass Hammer; Big Big Train; Mike Oldfield; Peter Gabriel ; Steve Hackett; Steve Howe; Rick Wright (esp. Broken China); Post-Rock/Experimental etc ... GSYBE; Explosions in the Sky; Mogwai; Sigur Ros; Stars of the Lid; 1 Mile North; Harold Budd; Bark Psychosis; Rothko; Labradford; Talk Talk; David Sylvian I am especially fond of Italian Prog - PFM; Banco; Celeste; Locanda delle Fate; Le Orme .... and have recently developed a liking for Tangerine Dream (the Virgin Years mainly). I also love aussie band The Church (Kilbey writes great lyrics ...see my signature). Others not strictly prog - Mercury Rev ... Flaming Lips. .. Sparklehorse ...XTC ..... Prefab Sprout ... Cocteau Twins .. Blue Nile .. Mojave 3 ; Arcade Fire ... .etc etc well, maybe I like pretty much everything apart from Dream Theater ... I tried, I really did ... bought Images & Words and Scenes ... maybe I need therapy... Oh well, just thought I'd show my face at last ...hope you don't mind this long and rather boring post with me going on about my obsession ... but, I guess I'm not alone here ------------- I was never really sure what I was waiting for. Welcome to the forums. Well, you're definitely on the right track, for sure. All good stuff up there! However, being in the mood I am, I cant let this thread go without fully recommending Pain of Salvation. They are prog metal by definition, but in truth so much more than that. Their music is some of the most emotional I've ever heard, and some of the best overall. Even though you don't like Dream Theater (who I do like), don't group PoS with them. PoS is so much more. I can't recommend them enough. The sample for The Perfect Element is a really bad example of their music, but the sample for Remedy Lane isn't bad. Teh albums have much better songs though...like A Trace of Blood, Idioglossia, Chain Sling, Rope Ends, Ending Theme, gawd they have so many good osngs. Just the samples are all the average ones. Your tastes are a bit more obscure than mine, I have to say...I haven't heard of some of those bands.  BTW, like I said, don't judge PoS by the sample Ashes. It's my least favorite song on the album. Felona - don't worry about this ongoing thread. One woman and tons of men - this can't lead anywhere. Stoneage isn't far away. Just to say: your list has many artists I like very much, and even more that I don't even know. But I have the same feeling about DREAM THEATRE. Not getting it's music in my head. They lack fantasy - IMHO. The same I have to encounter with RUSH. Very strange. I personally like GENTLE GIANTS album "Three friends". "Octopus" ist nice. But "Three friends" has more soul and flesh. You can bite on it. It's good for the teeth. But it also has magic moments of lyrical width and softness. Exciting music. Perhaps I missed it on your list. But one of my all time prog loves is UK "UK" with Bruford, JObson, Holdsworht and John Wetton . That you "must" at least give a try for your own's sake. Unbelievable music. If I had to bring a record up to the moon the deposit it as represantative for earth music - I would choose this UK album. Of course "Selling England" and "Close to the edge" would also do the job. But UK UK is a decent record. It is mind buggling. Hope I didn't steel your time. |

As far as the massage skills go... there was a woman who had a
chronic neck injury, herniated discs. She couldn't afford surgery
for it. She also couldn't sleep without a double-dose of
Vicodin. I massaged her neck for 30 minutes, and she fell asleep
in my arms, slept peacefully for 8 hours, and woke up feeling better
than she had in years... WITHOUT the painkillers. Alusa Fallax - Intorno alla mia Cattiva Educazione You need to get this asap! Based on the Italian groups you have mentioned i can give you a 100% guarantee that you will love this album. This album is kinda like a mix of the QVL debut and the Locanda delle Fate album. Wonderful and one of my favourites! Museo Rosenbach - Zarathustra An absolute masterpiece! The overall sound of this album is a little heavier than the likes of Banco, Le Orme and PFM but the album alternates in mellow and heavier sections (especially in the title suite) that are simply breathtaking. The mellow sections are the most beautiful you'll hear in prog. This band has a superb drummer Giancarlo Golzi who plays like he is in acids and in many ways he is the driving wheel in the band. This album didn't hit me instantly for some reason but it became my favourite 70's album. Maxophone - s/t An excellent album! I don't like this album as much as the aforementioned albums but it doesn't mean that this isn't good. You would probably like this album because you like italian prog in general. And a few extra recommendations... Biglietto per L'inferno - s/t This is one of my absolute faves! Again, this is little heavier like Museo Rosenbach. I recommend you to start with Museo Rosenbach and if you like it get this one next. Semiramis - Dedicato a Frazz This album is fantastic and quite original as well. This group is led by a fantastic guitar player Michele Zarrillo whose playing is fiery and played in hard rock way. A must! Campo di Marte - s/t Fantastic and underrated album. Apoteosi - s/t Fantastic and based on your tastes you would probably like this. Metamorfosi - Inferno Fantastic and for some reason overlooked by some. Il Rovescio della Medaglia - Contaminazione Fantastic and in my opinion the best interpretion of classical music. if you like classical music this is a must! Some other similar Italian groups worth checking: Alphataurus (1st), Balletto di Bronzo (Ys), Latte e Miele, J.E.T, Osanna (Palepoli), Il Volo, Pierrot Lunaire (1st), Raccomandata Ricevuta Ritorno (a little jazzy), New Trolls (especially Concerto Grosso per 1) Some other great groups but might not appeal to everyone (avant-garde, jazz fusion etc.): Area, Arti E Mestieri, Pierrot Lunaire (2nd), Picchio dal Pozzo, Pholas Dactylus I hope this post doesn't cost you too much money. Some of the best new italian groups that play in the tradition of the 70's groups (PFM, Banco) are Finisterre and Malibran. Then there is a very good Finisterre side-project called La Maschera di Cera that is similar to the heavier 70's italian groups like Museo Rosenbach. You won't like this band if you don't like Museo Rosenbach. Then there is Deus ex Machina which is more of an acquired taste because their music is kind of jazzier avant-garde progressive. They are one of the most praised contemporary groups in the world. They are quite similar to the 70's group Area. If you have a mp3 player (you can get it for free from the net if do not have it) there is mp3's for at least these great new Italian groups in the ProgArchives band pages: Deus ex Machina, Finisterre, Malibran, Minstrel and Nuova Era. Download them and make your decision based on that! BTW, the majority of the 70's italian groups that i mentioned in the previous post have a mp3 sample too. Those mp3's are really helpful! Oh boy, i luv it! It was about 5-6
years ago when I first heard Italian prog. It was the Locanda delle
Fate album which I purchased blindly just because I got enthusiastic
after reading many Italian prog album reviews. That album just had that
something I felt was missing from everything else I had heard. It's
hard to explain if you haven't experienced it. Actually, it wasn't
until this experience that I really became a prog fan. After this I
started to explore the Italian prog scene and little by little also
many other groups from various countries. I noticed that progressive
music that I like is made all over the world. I'm not limited to
Italian prog in any way though it definitely is easily my favourite
prog genre. And those bands that i listed are just the icing of the cake (most of the classic stuff) because there has been a lot prog released in Italy especially in the seventies. Even today the italian prog scene is one of the most active ones though not as rewarding as in the seventies (where is it?). I have albums from quite a few other italian groups as well and of which some are very good. So, how did you get into Italian prog? This site is great if you want to learn more about Italian groups because there is even mp3s. Do you have a mp3 player (WinAmp or Windows Media Player) in your computer? |

Not 70's Italian groups I can rec. you: Deus Ex Machina A Piedi Nudi Malibran Sithonia (if you like BMS you must have and I personally know the guitar player...)
La Maschera Di Cera Evil Wings (Prog Metal with English vocals, IMO they're terribly underrated, even IMO They're better than Dream Theater but they were unlucky to be Italians and not Americans...)

how interesting ... it was the Locanda delle Fate album that was my first purchase ... it was recommended one of those Listmania thingies on Amazon .... and I liked the artwork! Next I downloaded many samples from here, read reviews and then in no time I had built up a basic collection ... so as you can see Ive still got a long way to travel with this wonderful genre There IS something indefinable about this music - maybe its because I don't know what the heck they're singing about (I prefer the singing in Italian) and to focus on the musical qualities of the vocals and the musical feel of the words .... there's lots of passion, intensity and great musicianship -I believe many were classically trained. Or maybe its just because I think Italian is very sexy .... btw .... I have just listened to Le Orme's Elementi ... THEY'RE BACK!!!!!! ------------- I was never really sure what I was waiting for. Hi Felona, having fun with the guys I see. How do you like it so far? I see you're into Italian prog. Being a Yank, this stuff wasn't all that widely available here in the States in my era the 70s. So I'm kinda still learning about these other sub-genres. With 1500 CDs ( ego still bruised! ) you could probably teach me a few things. Fusion was the big thing for me then and still now. How 'bout you? Basically rock and jazz are my biggest musical interests. When I mean rock, I like a lot of different other genres including blues-based as well. Whereabouts in Aus are ya?

Well if you want to go on an adventure into jazz/fusion, keep in mind it's not everybody's stubby of Fosters or Swan or Emil. Even some die-hard proggers find it ponderous and too loose. And I can understand that. Jazz is more or less a musician's music. I played drums and most drummers just go for it. I would say about the most symphonic fusion to checkout to start with would be violinist extraordiniare Jean Luc Ponty who unfortunately is not in the archives yet (some of us are working on it!). My favorite albums of his are the back-to-back Aurora and Imaginary Voyage done in the mid 70s. If you decide to give him a shot, let me know. |

I'm sure you will like the Alusa Fallax album. From your recent posts I have gotten to somewhat know your prog tastes. Based on this I'm not complitely sure that you will like Museo Rosenbach. Just remember to give it some time if it doesn't hit you instantly. ps. It seems to me that there has been quite a lot of CD traffic in your mail box lately. That must be sad for your credit card . Hi Geezer ... yes, I think I took a risk with Museo but I do like some heavier stuff too ... I definitely won't give up on it too quickly!
