Krimson has done much better stuff. People seem to prop this album because it's the original prog rock pioneer...but that doesn't automatically make it good. Don't get me wrong, half of it is good, like 21st Century Schizoid Man and I Talk To The Wind...but the title track has moments of genius too scattered in between. Also, Moonchild isn't too great. Pretty at first, then just bad.

I liek the album, but Red, Lark's Tongue, Discipline, and even some of their recent stuff is much better in my opinion. I'd put them at:

1. Red
2. Lark's Tongue
3. ITCOTCK
4. Discipline
5. Three of a Perfect Pair

Just cause they pioneered the sound doesn't mean there isn't  better....once again, I LIKE ITCOTCK. I LOVE KING CRIMSON. Just ITCOTCK isn't their best in my ears...it's not as creative as Lark's Tongue or as beautiful as Red can get.

I think The Power To Believe is excellent in its own right without having to stand up next to classic stuff.

I think The Power To Believe stands up to the classic stuff quite well.

The Eyes Wide Open DVD set would make any open-minded individual a believer in the beauty of modern Crimson.

I agree with you. It is a great album, but not there best. I think Larks' Toungue..., Red, Discipline, and possibly TPTB are better. Moonchild is deffinatly the worst, but all the rest are solid to great. All fans of prog need to hear this album, IMO. And, yes, it is hyped because it started it all, but that's ok, i think it can stand up to that fame, almost anyway.

I haven't really gotten into them aside from In the Court of the Crimson King, so I couldn't really express anything besides I think the album is fine as a whole.

I think it's a decent album but not their best by a long shot. 'Moonchild' is a poor track & was a sign of things to come when Fripp got full control of the band. I also disagree it was the album that started it all. 'The Nice' should be credited for that IMHO!

Now that I own all the studio albums of the 70's KC, I have to say I enjoy each album in its own right - there is not a single weak album among them.

While ItCotCK (more specifically being blown away by Schizoid) introduced me to KC, I agree it is not their best album.  All but one tracks are stellar; Moonchild just is plain boring.  I'm sorry, I know Fripp is a genius and all (proven by his subsequent works) but no matter how "technical" Moonchild may be, I will never be entertained by it.

One of my more recent albums is In the Wake of Poseidon.  I really like it, and in some respects, I think it surpasses even the great debut album.  I'm no fan of ranking music, especially when it is all stellar, but ItCotCK (like most other KC albums) is just one song shy of being a complete masterpiece front to back.

That's my take on it.

Anyone who abbreviates it any other way than ITCHYCOCK is quite simply wrong.

yes, it is a bit overrated, but still a great album.

KC has made much better on LTIA and Red, though. So, my list is:

1. Larks Tongues

2. Red

3. ITCOTKC

4. 3 Of A PP

5. Discipline

1. Larks Tongues

2. Red

3. Starless and Bible Black

4. Three of a Perfect Pair

5. Power to Believe

in the court...would be near the bottom for me.

Well, I agree it is more respected for it's pioneering (it is not the first prog album but it the one that puting the standard to anything that came after) and it's not a perfect album (but not very far away of it) but I would give it five stars for the combination between importance and music.

Ranking only the 70's staff (the rest is different but also good IMO) my list would be :

1. Red

2. Lizard

3. Lark's tounge in aspic

4. Islands

5. Starless & bible black

6. In the court of the crimson king

7. In the wake of Poseidon

8. Earthbound

All the first seven are 5 stars IMO !

2. Red - Their best album from the Wetton / Bruford - era

3. Larks' Tongues In Aspic

4. Lizard

5. In The Wake Of Poseidon

6. Thrak - their best post-Red album

1. Beat - sounds like Talking Heads to me, and the songs do nothing for me

I TOTALLY agree with this thread..

ITCOTCK...yuk....what is that crap on side 2? 'Moonchild...'..

I love 'Lizard', 'Red', 'Larks tongues..' all great...why their first album is so heralded loses me..I think 'in the wake of poseidon' craps on it.
