Are you sure you have the correct version for XP?

I think so, it seemed to detect my OS and recognised it as Windows. It didn't specify XP, but I'm not doing anything differently to the last time I installed it.

I've uninstalled the last version.

Would the default browser I use make any difference?

It's version 10.1 which is apparently supported by XP and my browser.

It appears to be a common problem with this version. Users are fuming about it! I may just have to be patient. It's currently running at 0.8kb/sec with an estimated completion time of over 8 hours.

Can anyone recommend a better (free) player that will work with Youtube and similar sites?

If you have uninstalled it just go to any site that has flash content and your browser should indicate a plug-in is need to view that content. Just click on it and flash should install- with the latest version.
And there is no other way to view flash on the web other than to have the flash plug-in. It is part of the code on the web page that states the player is flash player.

addition: Firefox has a nice interface for checking the plug-ins: Tools->Add-ons->Plug-ins->Find Updates.
This will let you know the state of all plug-ins that are installed and allow direct updates for the most common. Of course this won't help if you don't use firefox or you have uninstalled flash.

It's most probably you won't find another player that would be as good.

I'd recommend, that you removed the earlier version completely from your computer, then went to the site and downloaded the newest, which this one probably still is and tried again. It doesn't sound like a UI problem to me, and problems with installing are usually caused by the former version or lack of supporting driver files or even the program being unable to find the files it's supposed to install.

Adobe software tends to have it's problems.

Folks, I'm going to try again today. I had already removed the previous version, and had attempted to download the new version from the Adobe site, via Youtube. So, it seems I've ticked all the boxes. I'll just have to persevere. I've not had problems with flashplayer before.

Thanks for for all your comments and suggestions.

Forgot to add in my previous post that adobe is now including Mcafee scan as a default download with all its updates. If you don't want this make sure you untick that selection. If you think you have already installed it and you are using your own trusty antivirus you will need to go to add/remove programs and uninstall it- not a good idea to have 2 antivirus scanners running.

Actually it's Norton security scan, not Mcafee control.

I like the snow too. It's how winters should be, instead of the perpetual rain we had been used to in the south for the last 20 years..

If this is the case, then you'll notice it's one that comes with flash player, but not all adobe programs.
