Subject: Elton John to prog related

Elton John was one of the most original and prolifc composers in the seventies having superb piano style, great vocal harmonies, interesting lyrics and conception, and innovative music, though sometimes called poppy mainly in and after the eighties. I think he deserves to be included as prog related.

Hi Balázs. If you search the forum you'll see that Elton has been discussed several times in General Music Discussions.
Okay, the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album is quite proggy but he's not going to get added on the strength of one album (his tenuous link to Gentle Giant notwithstanding). I really love his '70s work though, Madman Across The Water probably being my favourite.

I would say only a few tracks on GYBR are proggy - notably Funeral For A Friend.

And I think that this guy's got so huge discography that some Prog albums amongst them would be almost lost :- /

Hi Balázs.
I think his name is Markó. Hungarians tend to give their surname first.

My apologies Markó.

^ Yep, Balázs (or Balá in Czech) is surname. Still there's not much to do for Elton (not knowing him, I would confused his name/surname as well)

I cant see Elton as PR even though GYBR is progish, thats the 70s vibe really and nothing special about that, a lot of artists were doing conceptual material..

I prefer Madonna first, she is more innovative. Elton John even in his young years was more conservative idol for mamma's boys

I think that El;ton John was dismissed for Prog Related with a comment from one of the team saying something like "that clown will never get into PA".
Supertramp's "Fool Overture" reminded me considerably of "Funeral for a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding". I used to wonder if Supertramp were influenced by that Elton John track.
I wonder if Madonna has done anything similar.

Yup, I wholeheartedly support Elton John's addition. I know that it will never happen due to many people's exclusive definitions of prog, but you have my support. I would be so happy if he were in our database.

Don't think P/R but an awesome album by her and of course the talented William Orbit.

Mentioning Phil Collins singing Elton John was the kiss of death to EJ's chances I'm afraid. ;) Nice cover actually.
Of course Dream Theater has covered "Funeral For A Friend..."
By the way, I hope some check out the early version of "Madman Across the Water" I posted, I think it's much better than the subsequent one on the album Madman Across the Water.

I don't know much about Elton John, but I do know his early (70's) albums do have some symphonic rock flavour.

OK, but we're going to have to move Vangelis and Synergy to progressive electronic to make room.

I know you're just making a joke, but I'd sooner see Vangelis in Crossover.
Not that this is Crossover material:
Eclectic may be a possibility too.
Anyway, sorry for the digression.

All rock is "prog related," because prog came from rock.
(Or is it that prog is rock-related?)
Whatever -- let 'em all in. Everything. No need to argue ever again.

Next, we need some more Neils: Sedaka and Diamond.
Someone here likes them, somewhere. Be fair.

Most likely because Elton John really isn't all that prog related.
If we accepted every band that had a few prog-related or hell full blown prog songs (Funeral for a Friend comes to mind), we'd have to accept half of all rock music ever made.

Found this thread only now...I won't miss an opportunity to claim that Vangelis should be in a full prog sungenre....but I don't see much relations between Elton John and the prog world, apart of his early involvment with the Giles bros and the appearance in Tommy. Not tha I dislike, but he's mainstream glam pop and I don't see any track of prog in his music. I'd be more in favor of Neil Young in case
