My lady's favourite band used to be Muse, but she didn't really like the direction they took with Absolution and she rarely listens to them these days. Nowadays she doesn't really have a single favourite, but we're starting to influence one another's tastes a lot more - she's into Cardiacs, Max Tundra, Thus:Owls, North Sea Radio Orchestra, Everything Everything, etc. thanks to me, and in turn I've gotten into stuff like Adam Green and White Stripes which I wouldn't have given a second thought in my prog-snob days. |

My wife likes sophisticated pop music, vocal jazz, classic RnB and neo-soul. Some of her favorites include Nina Simone, Steely Dan, Sting, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Norah Jones, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, Stereolab etc.
I can't complain, her tastes are often more sophisticated than my own. |

Dream Theater. I approve. She used to like Nickelback. I used to have cramps for that. Luckily, it seems it was just a thing of the moment... Anyway, I don't care. She can like whatever she wants. She goes with me to all my classical concerts. And she enjoys them. I love her.

When our record collections merged we ended up with two copies of Dark Side Of The Moon, Tubular Bells, Hunky Dory and Parallel Lines (well, it was the early 80s) - I think the rest of her collection was Barclay James Harvest's Octoberon, Carole King's Tapestry and The Free Story (I can't remember - I haven't played any of them in the past 30 years and not likely to anytime soon).
Anyway, joint likes - Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, XTC, Muse, Nick Cave, Inkubus Sukkubus, Neil Young.
She likes, I don't - Razorlite. The Killers.
I like, she doesn't - metal.

My Mrs Loves a bit of Free(and Bad Co) and Rod Stewart and The Faces which great by me but she is also a Country Girl now i don't mind a bit nice ole country from Emmylou Harris or Mr Cash or TheEagles But all that modern Country Pop crap that's played on the radio noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo makes me want to kill something aaaaaaaaaaaaaa. oh and she loves Remember the Future by Nektar which is cool. -------------

Mrs. someone_else is hardly interested in music. Sometimes she plays some Christian worship music. She likes Over the Rhine as well (not really my thing, but surely not bad). One thing we both like is a series of recent reworkings of the Psalms (in Dutch). Some of them might be classified as prog related.

My wife is a recovering classically trained pianist....she doesn't play much anymore; she's now into the guitar 'cause she's fascinated with Joni Mitchell's tuning style.
She digs harmony and melody.....she likes early Yes but can't stand anything after the Yes Album. She loves the Beatles but can't stand George, John and Ringo's solo stuff. She abhors the Grateful Dead....she keeps noticing that they're never in tune and thinks Bob Weir was only in the band 'cause the rest of the band were so fugly. And she gets up and leaves the room when I play Zappa.....well, most jazz-fusion, really.
Her favorite musicians are Django and Gabor Szabo....she's a gas. She can't cook, ruins clothes when she tries to wash 'em and only makes things messier when she tries to clean, but she has excellent taste in music. ------------- I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there..... |

Never heard more than few songs by him, both of us. I used to like his collab song with pop band Blue though. When I was younger though though. Ahem ahem.
Oh, that sucks. Someone like you deserve a girl to love him. But maybe your tastes in music are too demanding ? I know that when I was looking for girl, I was extremely demanding, but I was lucky. In a nutshell, she loves me, loves Prog, read sci-fi books, sometimes play games & can handle computer well, looks good to me, doesn't smoke, do drugs, & doesn't hang out with friends all the time. Perfect.
Ian, Yes is quite unique in term of Symphonic bands. Do she like Camel / Genesis ? Because with Yes, you have to like the music & vocals, which may be problem for some. Try to show her this special song, clap. Or start with "The Yes Album", it's I think the most accessible from classic era. And I'm sure that my girl loves albums from Atom Heart Mother till the end. I don't like last two Pink Floyd albums that much though, but I can obviously listen them.
Queen, very. Pink Floyd - very. Then classic rock bands like Led Zep, Purple, to lesser extent also The Who and Rolling Stones (not that she doesn't like them, but don't know them that much). AOR is weird thing. We sometimes can listen it, but sometimes the said album is too much ... cheap.
Ohmygod, no argues here. Well, I don't know Kate Bush, Gabriel's solo and Fleetwood Mac that much, but basically, this is heaven, isn't it ? It would be tough to be with girl that doesn't like The Beatles. They're basic band, leaping stone from which we can get anywhere.
Not sure how sophisticated Darling Violetta is, but I love this Pop band. Not typical Pop though. However I'm not sure that my girl would agree to these genres, but after all, we can't be all different and we get to Prog from different angles, point of views...
I think that we (I for sure) remember this photo of yours you use to have in your signature. Better than 1000 words. I'm rather glad that my girl doesn't listen what I don't like / can't stand. For example when she listens Rock music, these Classical / bluesy things, I can listen to it. When she listens Folk, I can listen it, I can enjoy these. Be it R'n'B, I won't be able to manage to suffer through. On the other hand, we have unspoken treaty that we won't listen hip-hop when other one is around. I suspect that we're not listening it when we're alone :-D Even I like two albums - Eminem Show & Paul's Boutique.
We never heard them, but I was thinking about them. I saw them few times in The Simpsons and I quite like their apperance, their look.

Classic Rock is fine, Folk music is also fine and they were my girl's most favourite styles. Before Prog came (and I came). She got me into The Decemberists though.
Not sure about new Pop Country, but new Country Rock or Bluegrass, it's not bad for me. I can actually listen to good old country, this mellow, easy-listening kind of music. For relaxing for example.
I know only Collins and Camel, the rest are Pop singers I suppose ? I didn't do the research though :-)

I used to like these girls (or more like I used to "don't mind" these girls) when I was younger, but I don't like girls who aren't decided what to listen. As I said, I'm very demanding when it comes to my personal life. Usual question was - and what styles you like ? Well, more or less everything. Aargh, when she replied (the ones I was dating) that she listens radio, it was even worse. Nowadays, we have Rock radio in Czech Republic (and I mean good old Rock, not new Pop Rock), but it's not that old. Anyway, I know that they were listening Popular stations.

Jazzy / Avant-i ? That's hardcore, you know lady ? Even I like some of these, I'm not sure my girl is ready for such kind of music so I play it rarely. My time will come though, it's matter of time.
Actually my girl didn't like Elephant9's 2010 release, while I learned to like it. It's weird and crazy piece, but I like it.

I think that I can agree with your Rock category, but the rest, well, not for us. Maybe Country and of course, The King But Prog can be quite diverse as well. From Asia AOR to some Prog Folk - country themed songs, bluesy Dixie Dregs, Jazzy-well, everything etc etc
How comes that girls so often loves The Killers ? I never understood it. Metal, that's important key element, isn't it ?

OK, it sounds bad, but I know what do you mean by "Had to take her to see", because I had to take my girl to see one Slovakian Pop (it should be Pop-Rock, but I don't hear it) artist, whose playing and voice may be nice, but he played songs I heard hundreds of times (literally) on radio when I was younger. And you know that you can't escape radio, you'll hear it in shop/stores, in buses where bus driver is listening it, in office where someone clever is listening it ............ They say that this kind of music can't offend people, but people will get fed up with it. She does listen to music. Just not often. She prefers to do other things (mostly visual things, since she is skilled in interior design, cake decorating, photography, and scrapbooking). She likes listening to fun music, unlike us. My ex complained about and made fun of my tastes all the freaking time, despite the fact that he claimed he was a music fan. He even called Tom Waits (my favourite recording artist of all time) "Krusty The Clown." If I was listening to music in the living room alone and he got home, he would turn on the TV and lower my music without even asking, then say "well, you can still hear". He was stubborn and wouldn't listen to any of my recommendations. One day I came home and caught him listening to Leonard Cohen because his friend had recommended it, despite the fact that he had always bitched about him if we were in my car and it was playing. There were many reasons why I broke up with him, but that was actually the final draw for me. After this experience, even if I do know than being compatible in every way is not necessarily that important to make a relationship work, I now refuse to date anyone who's musical tastes I don't respect or vice versa. I'm not saying he has to understand what a great voice Peter Hammill has, but if at least he appreciates prog, I can deal with it. |

Anyways, most of what she listens to is J-Pop, which I approve of for the most part as there are some songs that I enjoy greatly. (Although I sort of regret introducing her to "Cruel Angel's Thesis," as she justs sings the lyrics phonetically.) I've never showed her any Prog bands, and to be honest, I really don't care what kind of music she's interested in. Music taste isn't and shouldn't be an important element in a relationship, IMO. But hey, I've never been in one so what do I know? |

Sounds like the basic lack of respect did in your relationship and the music was just incidental. It's cool if you have musical compatibility, but if your relationship works on other levels it isn't essential. I'm 45. Oh, I totally agree. It's not like you can have a working relationship with anyone if you don't have the same ideas about family, politics, religion, etc. Luckily for me, I met my current beau ( ) thanks to last.fm and we happened to have super compatibility musically. And turned out we felt the same about the other big issues.And I like that at 46, he also wants someone who enjoys music as much as he does. |

My wife loves 30's and 40's big band and swing. I've actually started developing a taste for it. There was some surprisingly racy stuff back then.

Perhaps the prog of it's day. I can appreciate that stuff although the closest I have come to it in my collection is Birth Of The Cool. On second thought maybe classical was the prog of it's day. ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

My lovely missus very kindly puts up with whatever I happen to be playing, and she enjoys quite a bit of it now. At the moment, she especially likes IQ, The Decemberists, and Oldfield. She does, though, unfortunately draw the line at H era Marillion. Years of attempts to educate have fallen on deaf ears

6 years ago (Marty 16 years), I wouldn't mind girl stating that she listens "everything", or "what's on radio" - pop stations. Now (Marty about 22), I won't be able to be with such a girl. Its easier to say what she dont like since like me she likes almost everything, but she likes alot of stuff i have never heard and i like some stuff she never heard so we have alot to share, but i know she hate Iron maiden and most 80s metal, other then that she likes all good music, but she thinks i listen a bit to much to PH and VDGG.  -------------

My wife enjoys Edna Swap and Bonnie Raitt which is fine by me. I don't bother playing the music I used to, it's just so retarded to think that the idea of actually putting on Art Zoyd in a Country & Western town like mine would be worthy or proper. What's the point of exposing myself? If she takes the kids to North Jersey, she gives me a gift. A night alone with one of my freaky friends, plenty of wine and choices for mind expansion, and Popol Vuh, Univers Zero, Frank Zappa, Guru, Guru, or whatever I desire. It's not as exciting as it sounds but it sure beats an evening at Cowtown rodeo. As I've said one million times over, where I live one must climb a telephone pole to answer their incoming phone calls. Yeah,....Eddie Albert lives here in spirit. It's their deal not mine. I still remain behind closed doors listening to Krautrock wondering if in Germany people are alien to this extreme? I doubt it. But then again, it could be the old "Grass is not so Greener on the other side situation" right?
Like the time I met a prog fan from Germany at Nearfest. I was really excited to even meet anyone from Germany and like a fool, I asked him if he liked Amon Duul II, Guru, Guru, and Eloy and his response was "Well, all of those bands are in a box"....I said....In a Box? He said...Yes, people in Germany today think of bands like that as being in a box. It was then, upon arriving home that night, that I packed all my prog cd's into boxes and stored them in a closet on the 2nd floor. I needed to do it anyway for their safety but, I also did it for a kind of sick sarcastic humourous reason as a reaction to what he said. It's like I've told you all before.....when you eat, later there is an end product. That's nature's way of saying F-YOU. or a new piece of gum with tasty flavor is popped into your mouth and then later it loses it's flavor becoming mulch.....Again, that is nature's way of saying F-CK YOU! It's easier to believe that these things in life happen for no apparent reason. The turmoil is not worthy and therefore the emotionally charged reaction is meaningless. I don't want to hurt you and you should not go the distance either. That is how I feel about the difference in people's musical taste. |
