Nice idea - I've always fancied the thought of being a DJ. I won't time the songs, which would take too much time, but here's an effort: 1. Marillion - Invisible Man 2. Tull - Flyingdale Flyer 3. Thanks. Understandable re once for everyone, but I have always dreamed of bookending a radio playlist with my two favourite tracks from my favourite album. Personally, I think that M@X should start a PA radio show on the net, and allow us all a slot. Wouldn't that be great? ------------- Enhance your life. No radio station would allow me that, because they fear a loss of listeners. But two hours is tough, so I try to choose not so long tracks. Often think of this...wanted my ownshow back when I was in college, but timing was always an issue. I often make mixed cds so I could probably jjust combine two of those, but for the sake of fun I'll come up with something. I'll make a short list now (out of order) of must haves.

I think I'll have to go with stuff that even many prog fans haven't heard of, but it's going to take some time... Is this a straight up two hour or do we have to take out commercial time? What the hell, it's prog we not only don't need no stinkin' commercials but no sponsors would buy any time anyway. In any event, I will have to run a time calculator to get to two hours. Of course I could always cheat and do really long songs. I won't even start mine but will start later. By the way, it's just wrong wrong to start a thread like this and not complete your list. ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Miss Shapiro - 801 Live - 801: A fun opener for the show. It may be happening and fattening but it isn't all I can fit into the show. Timeless - Timeless - John Abercrombie: Nice long instrumetal song and yes it is timeless. Jan Hammer's on this album. In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed - The Allman Brothers Live At The Fillmore East - The Allman Brothers: Most of the body of their work isn't really prog. If you know this song you know that they had their moments. Ocean Song - Olias Of Sunhillow - Jon Anderson: Jon's first solo album and the album opener. Majestic. Pancake - Scarlett's Walk - Tori Amos: Basically a song about religious hypocrites. If you don't mind that theme it is also rather energetic. "'Cause I can look your God right in the eye." Slip Away - Life On A String - Laurie Anderson: This one touches me deeply. It is about people you know dieing of old age. Into The Circle - Arc Of The Testimony - Arcana: The guys I know best on here are Bill Laswell, Buckethead, and Tony Williams. This would be Tony's last album before he slipped away. Really cool sort of atmospheric instrumental piece. Has a heavy edge to it, too. Atlantis Rising Fanfare - Automatic Man - Automatic Man: A shorl lived band that should have had some more recognition. Unfortunately they moved away from prog in their second album and that's it. The first album is pretty progressive unless you don't think funky stuff and prog can live together. This opening track is prog to be sure. Butterfly's Dream - Booth And The Bad Angel - Angelo Badalmenti: I'm not sure Angelo fits into the realm of prog totally, but his soundtrack work for David Lynch is superb. Brian Eno contributed background vocals for this track. Mark Egan, who has done bass with Pat Metheny, is also on this one. Battles - Two Sides Of Peter Banks - Peter Banks: With Akkernan and Collins? Yeah, it's short but sweet. Peter really brought in an interesting array of guests for this album. I think I filled up my first program. If not add commercials. Make them short and funny. Oh crap. The playlist says that it's only 62 minutes. So that's the first hour. Screw any commercials. I need to fill the whole two hours. Drugged (the first one) Bass Communion - Bass Communion: If you don't have a taste for the ambient then you're not likely to like this one like. And that's like all I will say. Though I happen to like it and the whole Bass Communionses that I have tried so far. Diamond Dust - Blow by Blow - Jeff Beck: Another really beautiful jazzy/classically instrumental.. This was the album that got me into Jeff. Gives fusion a good name. Big Electric Cat - Lone Rhinocerous - Adrian Belew: The kicker offer off of his first solo. Plenty more good tunes to follow. Sunday - Heathen - David Bowie: Yeah, this is supposed to be for a Saturday afternoon. To hell with it. Defy convention. Although when Eno's Thursday afternoon comes up in rotation, I'll play it you know when. Dammit, I could have used up a whole hour with that one. Well, this one's probably the most memorable track on the album for me. The David Torn opening guitar. Came out just a few months after the 9/11 attacks. Has a nice organic sort of build up in the music. Smacks Of Euphoric Hysteria - Unorthodox Behavior - Brand X: this track sort of smacks of euphoric hysteria. No duds on this album. I just picked it because it uh... The Abingdon Chasp - One Of A Kind - Bruford; I seem to be on a mostly instrumental kick. The best of the Bruford albums and a nicely intense and varied track. Most if the stuff on this album fits that description. Freigewhet - Rainer Bruninghaus: More tasty atmospheric music. I've only got a couple of his albums. Instrumental and very interesting. Another one of the fine musicians that have graced the ECM label. Set yourself freee, by the wind, baby. Nun Chuka Kata - Monsters And Robots - Buckethead: Ending on an album ender. My favorite album by Mr. Head, not favorite a track, but it did round out the two hours, and is still fun. I hit two hours on the nose!  I'll call this show Prog Through The Artist Alphabet. I used to dj in bars/clubs, but not on the radio unfortunately.
A 2 hour set of prog songs (Steve's is fantastic by the way
 ) would be a damn sight easier to programme than the trance/techno/prog trance/IDM I used to mix. |
