I'm counting the years 1967-1978 as the "classic" era, but if you vote for a guitarist from a different time in "other", the guitarist was active in years close to the ones I mentioned and you have a pretty good reason that'd be okay. I'm sure I left a few off, but, you know...that's what "Other" is for.

Get votin'.

It could be Fripp or Gilmour on another day, but today it's Barre.

in terms of actual musical ability and knowledge, probably MacLaughlin

when it comes to creativity and innovation, I would say Fripp or Zappa

in terms of sheer gusto, Howe

That being said, I voted for Green

Hackett, because he excelled on acoustic as well as electric; Howe, a close second for the same reasons; Fripp third ; Latimer fourth; Gilmour fifth; Zappa sixth ...

Renato D'Angelo from Banco. Beautiful tone. But since he's not on this list, I chose Gilmour. Again, a guitarist who's out of this world.

Hackett for me, he managed to define the sound of Genesis (with Banks) and nobody really noticed him until VOTA and even more when he left the band.

A virtuoso with electric and acoustc guitar as well as in almost any genre, IMO the most versatile and complete Prog guitarist/composer.

I'm giving my vote to Trower, not so much for his work with Procul Harem, which was just fine if rather mundane, but to his solo work, which in turn was simply fantastic.

Steve Hillage is a significant missing item, but Steve Hackett never can be beaten by anyone my that be Zappa or Fripp or anyone else from this era. Otherwise, my one would undoubtedly go for Tony MacAlpine.

An incredible list of masters.here. Sir Gilmour is the one that moves me more, followed very close by Andy Latimer. Technically speaking, Hackett and Howe, Mclaughlin, Di Meola...Any of them is the top in his genre.
I agree about Steve Hillage, but there's surely somebody else missing if we dig a bit.

Enough votes for Fripp, Hackett and Gilmour.

I'll go with an overlooked favorite of mine, Alex Lifeson: both excellent riffs and delirious solos!

David Gilmour, though not the most flash guitarist in the world, he expresses emotion in his solo's, like no other guitarist I have ever heard. It's not about manual dexterity for me, it's about playing from the heart, and feeling. I have seen some of the best guitarist's in the world, but the only one to ever reduce me to tears at a gig, was Gilmour. I have admiration for all the other's mentioned, especially Hackett and Latimer, but Gilmour is, and always will be, the man!!Wink

Tough call this.

I know everyone raves about Hackett but to be honest you don't really hear him that much with Genesis.  Clearly the "main man" in Genesis was always Mr Banks with Hackett very much in the back seat.  Hackett's solo stuff gives him more chance to shine but he definitely wouldn't be my choice.

Gilmour is a big fave of mine, lovely languid style and great feeling. My favourite yes, but best?  Probably not.

Akkerman is well worth a mention too.

I'll go for Howe though, he appears the best to me, and with such an individual style and wonderful emotion in his playing.

Very difficult to choose.. I wonder how many of todays guitarists will be remembered and highly regarded 30 years after their glory days?

Although, obviously some of these masters are still going strong!

I'm going to go for Fripp, with Hackett and Zappa in close joint second, and Mr Lifeson not far behind them..

Well, I did say it was difficult to choose..

For me it's a question of feelings. I'm more moved by Gilmour and Latimer, but this doesn't mean that I don't like Hackett or McLaughlin.

Oh, I wasn't criticizing you or anything, I just somehow always forget how popular Pink Floyd is, and how emotionally invested in them people get.

I´m astonished he doesn´t lead anymore. By the way, Roye Albrighton from Nektar is missing here. Also Peter Banks (Yes, Flash) is underrated, god knows why.

1. Zappa (maybe not the most technical guitarist, but his note-selection and classical/jazz influenced bites are amazing)
2. Gilmour
3. Tommy Bolin
4. John McLaughlin
5. Carlos Santana
6. Steve Howe
7. Allan Holdsworth
8. Andy Latimer
9. Robert Fripp

I find it weird that Gilmour has so many votes, though I don't complain, he's one of my favourite guitar players. It's also weird that Hackett is so far behind votes, and even Fripp should be closer, I guess.

A great group of guitarists. Howe was the best of this group. He was just capable of playing that was so different at the time.

Have to give a plug for Martin Barre of Jethro Tull. Very under-appreciated, but absolutely critical to Tull's sound. His solo albums show just how good he really is.

Nice to see some love for Barre, who I agree is very under-appreciated and always has been. He's a very tasteful player who happens to have great chops when he is allowed to show them. He's also a super-cool guy, and although IA steers the reigns, Tull would not have sounded the same without Lancelot.

I wanted to vote for him too. But this poll is one of the toughest I've seen so far on this board. Simply too many amazing players to pick one. Wildly varying styles. How could I pick Howe but not Hackett? Zappa but not McLaughlin? etc. etc. etc.... so in the end, I went for my all-time favourite guitar player, Alex Lifeson. That does not mean he is technically better or more proficient, or any of that stuff. In the end, that is unimportant.

It's more important to say that I love almost all of these guitarists for sometimes very different reasons. All hail King Lerxst! LOL

Hackett is my favourite, followed closely by Howe. My favourite, however, is probably Ollie Halsall, with Patto and Kevin Ayers, played such amazing guitar. He is so great and so underrated at the same time.
