Subject: Favorite Hawkwind Song?
Date Posted: September 03 2010 at 04:56
Note: I'm including only songs that I've heard and I deem worthy of being nominated. I have not heard any of their albums past Levitation. If your favorite is not on here, please click "other" and make a post explaining which song it is. I also didn't include poetry recitations like "Sonic Attack" because I don't really consider them songs, even though they are awesome. Thanks!

Hawkwind are probably my 2nd favorite rock band of all time. It's a tough choice, but I gotta go with "Psychedelic Warlords". That song blows my mind. It is my ringtone afterall. Smile

How do I pick my favourite Hawkwind song?

Well at the moment I'm listening to the rehashed Charisma / Calvert albums and so I would go for Quark Strangeness and Charm on the list (Off the list would be Flying Doctor boing boing boing boing boing etc)

"Master of the Universe" was the first Hawkwind song I heard, and "In Search of Space" was the first Hawkwind LP I bought. So, I must choose it for sentimental reasons, and also because it's a remarkable song!!!

Cool poll.

And wow bumped from September.

I just voted for Spirit Of The Age. Simply because it was one of the best experiences ever watching them play it live.

Musically You Shouldn't Do That is probably a favourite. Or just the whole of Space Ritual

I am currently digging:

Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. I also love jazz!

Please drop me a message with album suggestions.

What a poll !! The ones mentioned are ALL fantastic but lately (and I haven't listened to much Hawkwind in a while) my fave song is 'Wraith' (from the recent-ish 'Blood Of The Earth'). Dibs makes it happen.....

Hi,

Reefer Madness/Steppenwolf -- End of story!

After that, there are some of the sonic passages in "Electric Tepee".

Too many pieces to mention, but the sonic attacks are the things I love dearly, and some of the electronic pieces and mixes with the guitar in ET are phenomenal, and deserve better credit ... it's like having a Frank Zappa with 10 instruments under you and you boom the guitar over it!

Definitely Assault & Battery/Golden Void.  The first time I heard that mellotron intro I was hooked.

Honourable mentions...
Spirit of the Age, Quark, Magnu

And 10,000 bonus points to the live version of Silver Machine on "The Friday Rock Show Sessions" where Lemmy greets the crowd with "Hello b*****ds!" Bowdown

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

I always thought it was a synth.

I'm pretty sure that's Lemmy croaking and not a synth LOL

Seriously though, I just listened to A&B and the intro and first verses sound like a tron and string synth layer.  When the song goes to the flute solo about 3 minutes in, the sound drastically changes and sounds like a full on string synth run through a heavy phase shift effect.  Also, Simon House is credited with both mellotron and keyboards so it could well be a layer...and I can't think of any other place on the album that sounds like a tron.

I think there's 'tron on 'The Demented Man'.....actually, check out the site 'Planet Mellotron' - Andy Thompson is very thorough with what tracks feature mellotron......on ANY album.

Ya, Planet Mellotron is a great site!  I just had a look and he says Assault & Battery begins with Lemmy's bass over a bed of Simon House 'tron strings...also The Demented man has plenty of Simon's 'tron string and choir  Thumbs Up

Not sure why I can't vote in poll but could be that I don't know what I'm doing.

Anyway should be Hurry on Sundown as it was produced by Dick Taylor but I've been seduced by Master of the Universe and Spirit of the Age. On balance it has to be Master of the Universe for longevity.

I am very partial to the Calvert era (which I guess comes from when I first saw them in 77) and its a tough, tough choice (along with 'others') so Orgone Accumulator it is.  Not quite that era as Calvert was a sort of guest for 'Space Ritual' but its wonderful delivery from Calvert, that churning, powerful riff underpinned by Lemmy and Simon King: Hawkwind at their brilliant best!
