I'm even keeping the title legit so as to not cause an international situation.
Teams? Opinions? General thoughts about anything?
The NY Giants defense was beat up last year, but they should hopefully be healthy, new coordinator, and the new giants stadium is HUGE. Hoping for a much better year, especially on defense. Curious to see the Jets, Bengals, Eagles and Redskins performance this season.
inb4 OMG Brett Favre!

I think the Giants will be the worst team in the NFC East this season. I have no faith in their defense and some concerns about their running game. JPP I'm pretty sure will be a bust. Not that I care though.
I think the eagles will be in the 8-8 to 10-6 range. I don't really care about results this season. I'm just excited to see the new players and have them develop. I'm more concerned about two seasons from now. It's a nice feeling after the years of McNabb and having to keep expectations every year.

Well I'd say that goes to the skins. They got a lot of problems and McNabb plus all those old/not so good RB's are only temp solutions., and dont even address the problems. O-line and defense Eagles will have a decent year for sure, but no doubt they are a bit in the building process. Got some good players though.
JPP won't play much anyway. They have Tuck, Osi and Kiwanuka. Now JPP. That's FOUR defensive ends. I doubt he'll get a lot of playing time unless he turns out to be a stud. So thats whatevs The Giants' D was playing with injured DE's, a LB corps that was not good, and the secondary got wrecked. Assuming they all recovered from injury they'll be fine. I mean all teams have bad injury years, I can disregard it....but they need to step up and new players be developed.

The LB's are the weak spot on the D Pierce was damn good but he gone The rest are young/not so good.
Its a concern. Hopefully the Giants d-line will be back, and we can get through the season with mediocre LBs
And I just hate the Cowboys, but no concern at all about them.

^ i still am football fan.
A pretty good one too since my teams are UCLA in college and The Raiders in the pros.
Hope springs eternal and I think it may be founded this year in both levels of the sport for me. Now that Jablatto is history in Oakland we might have a real QB in Jason Campbell and the defense has been throughly upgraded. I know it is just pre-season but we held Dallas to 65 rushing yards. The Bears had that one play of 85 yards for a TD but the rest of the game only had 87. We also have recorded 12 sacks in two games. That is very encouraging. Plus I think the AFC West is weak and the Raiders have a good chance to add some wins in the division this year. As for UCLA Rick Neuheisel has had two very good recruiting classes and now has a little bit of experience mixed in. If the depth can hold up on the OL the offense might be decent this year. The Defense lost a lot with Brian Price and Alterraun Verner leaving but they have enough to have three guys who are already candidates for All American status. Now that the Walls of Troy have collapsed things might be looking up in Westwood for a change.
I am looking for a good year.

Thats the spirit!
And Garion...I thought last year showed the Raiders, though a bit dysfunctional, may not be so far off. I think they have some really good players. They dropped JaMarcus...(worst QB of our time? ) and I'm not sure how their O and D lines are...but they mat not too far off from a decent season.
As for college, I was only a casual fan (and that was only because I was in college ). So, in regards to that...I'll keep rooting for Penn State though I think they'll have a bit of a down year probably.

I'm hoping the Falcons will do better this year...we've got a sharper defense and Matt Ryan is maturing so hopefully that will be a combination for success.

The University of Michigan have been a real downer the last couple of years on the college level, and I'm not really expecting much of an improvement there. I think Rich Rodriguez needs to go.
The news outlets are doing their best to spring hope for the Lions this year. Apparently, Stafford is much better, this Best at running back is quite good, our receiving core is supposed to be quite good. There should be a lot of offense in the Motor City this year. The defense on the other hand appears to be as porous as ever. It is really funny how all of the talk was about how badly we needed to draft Suh with the 1st round pick. Which is cool, I think he is going to be good at his position. But then a month after he is drafted I am listening to the radio and they are saying don't expect to have Suh make an impact for a few years. It is basically his job to be double teamed so that the linebackers can make tackles. Therefore, he won't make many tackles during the year. And as far as sacks go, they were referring to some the great defensive ends like Reggie White and saying that they only had 2 or 3 sacks in their rookie seasons. It took a number of years before they learned their techniques to increase their sack output. I suspect by then, Suh will be playing alongside Rogers in Cleveland or some such thing.
Anyhow, there is some optimism here in Detroit. There is thought that they could be a .500 team and maybe with a little luck here and there sneak their way into the playoffs. Personally, I've been here, done that before, and will believe it only when I see it.

I' gunna hurt ya .. I like ya
Sorry, sorry. I like the falcons. They now have one of my fav backs (Michael Turner) and a potentially potent offense. If things get clicking they could be dangerous.
As for the AFC I do think the Ravens are going to be scary. Bengals will interesting at the least And a lot of people are high on the Jets, right fully so...but they don't have quite the same team. Not sure if their D and power run game will be as sharp....but if Sanchez develops more they will be good. He should make up the difference
The Lions had that good year in 07 with Jon Kitna and a good offense. Then the nose dive...

I would say the lions would be around the .500 team if they had an O-line.

What do you think about the discussions to increase the regular season from 16 games to 18 games?
-------------
|
Posted By: JJLehto
Date Posted: August 25 2010 at 23:39
Hmm, sounds like one of those obvious goods... I mean more games less pre season!
But I do agree with the NFL some time needs to be taken to think about things like roster size and maybe more flexible IR lists. More games = alot more injury chance. Stuff like that...but seems like a fine idea to me.
More football!

Do the Lions have it in them?

I have a feeling it's going to be another long season with the Chiefs. I went to the Eagles/Chiefs pre-season game and they just looked horrendous in the first quarter. Once Cassel loosened up and started throwing it around they looked better. They just don't have that deep threat, though.
And the fumbles!!! Holy Hell!!! They fumbled on the very first series against the Bucs last week, and on the very first play from scrimmage they fumbled. That crap is going to have to stop.

Of course pre season is just that... The Chiefs I thought may have a decent season, but who knows.
Also apparently they are the Patriots of the Midwest now...
I wonder how that over rated hack Tebow is gunna do. Will they try to run some madness? Actually develop him into a legit QB? Can he even do so?

Raiders did okay yesterday but still a lot of mistakes. 49'rs are a pretty good team so it will give them plenty to work on this week. Got to keep the QB from getting pounded into the ground. Everyone talks about their great draft this year but we still don't have that solid Left Tackle. Mario Henderson almost got Campbell decapitated with that non block in the second quarter. Good news is Bruce Gradkoski looked as good as he did last year until he got hurt. That gives us three solid QBs this year and I cannot remember the last time the Raiders were in that position.

Yeah, not too familiar with your guys' O-line (maybe that says something) but the raiders do appear to have a decent team being built. If it can just be "put together" then you may have something!

^ It is a very young team for the most part. New parts on defense are working out okay but still have given up a couple of long runs in the last two games but they have had some great stands as well. I am thinking that unit will get better as they go. The o-line has not really been addressed in the last couple of drafts and i think next year they will. Need a right guard and and left tackle specifically and I think it might be a top notch line.

Of course not...but they're defending champs.... old news Need to talk about the challengers to their crown!
Honestly, I like the Saints and was rooting for them for the playoffs and SB but I was surprised. I can't decide if their D was greater then the sum of its parts or they played beyond themselves that year...
Either way, I would like to see the D shored up...but they got some young players to develop so maybe no issue. I assume the offense will be ungodly...no reason to think otherwise at the moment

I am thinking that reducing the preseason to increase the regular season might be a bad thing. The Lions only seem to win in the preseason. Then again, if that could somehow translate to 2 regular season wins than I think that I would be all for it.

They need to use him more. Run a 3 receiver set with him in the slot. Also returning kicks. 16-0!

Posted this as a joke in the football thread but..
The 49ers will be a sleeper team this year IMO The NFC West is weak and they got some good pieces in place for a surprise run. Good O-line, great RB, strong defense (and more added).
Essentials aside...Alex Smith was surprising. If he maintains or improves, and Michael Crabtree quits being an ass....interesting team.

Thomas was a friggin power drill last night.....Only 3 TD last night combined, I just think there was way too much hype for this game. Both teams were probably way too pumped...Viks sure did look asleep except for Peterson...My Saints were loping off occasionally too..but Drew did all he needed to get the win.
Nice PAT block by the Saints, don't see that much in the NFL.
1-0

Always had a soft spot for the Saints, was rooting for them last year when the Giants season was over (LOL week 8?) Crazy awesome team they have to, and they have addressed their issues (will it work out depends of course). And they have great small name players. I liked Pierre Thomas since he made the team. Good management.
Also here's to hoping my #2 team, the St Louis Rams don't suck!

Woo! Was a bit sloppy at times but the Giants D played well. I really think a big part of the problem was injuries. With Osi, Tuck, and Phillips back (plus Rolle at safety) I'm feeling good. Run game was meh....

You'll be happy to know I have them fighting the Eagles for last place in their divison
Bad QB play and bad offensive play calling (if you read anything I wrote about Bruce Arians last year then you'd know that's expected) for the Steelers today and they still managed to scratch out a win. Just hang in there until Ben's arbitrary suspension is over, guys, and hopefully the kicker won't miss any more chip shots.

And yeah, I predicted the 49ers would be a sleeper team this year. Too soon to say anything but damn!

I may have to rescind my Redskins will be boat of fail comments....
Their O-Line was a HUGE problem....but I didn't realize they made some acquisitions. Also Shanahan is famous for taking meh backs and making them good with his blocking schemes.
I also didn't know they changed to a 3-4 which IS easier to implement. McNabb can still scramble..... Maybe they will be a bit more dangerous then I thought! NFC east is beast

The Lions kind of got screwed out of a touchdown on that last drive of the game against the Bears. Johnson had full possession of the ball in the air, got both feet down and landed on his butt before the ball got knocked out of his hand by the ground. It almost looked like he was trying to spike the ball.

In a weak division, Seahawks may actually take it! I don't know what Kool-Aid they're drinking down in Renton, and I have no expectations of the team at this point, but it was a nice win over the Niners. We'll see what the team's made of in Denver next week.

Wow, Ravens started poorly Very first snap, 2 guys just flatten him and force a fumble.
Yet again, if the G-men don't make it I'll go for the Jets. I am loving that team. Glad to see another team out there still believes in aggressive, attacking defense and tough smash mouth football. It just started...but the Jets D is hitting them on the other side of the line! I love it

Chiefs played tough defense but their offense was pretty sad. Difference between this game and the Jets one was that Kansas City managed to make a few plays...

Good to see the Steelers defense dominate again.
Also, still wondering why all the tv guys love Joe Flacco so much.

Cowboys lose Patriots lose
This is good, now I will have a SUPERB day if the G-men win (very possible but need to make sure they keep pressure on).
Also exciting game with the Texans going down!

Awesome game, though icing the kicker still irks me.
Exciting comeback and over 900 passing yards (just under 500 from Schaub!) Once in a while gotta love a shoot out

Indeed! Though the Texans do have quite a potent offense.
And manning bowl about up...a win is always nice but this will be the TRUE test if the Giants defense is back in shape. If their D plays at their best, (and of course avoids mistakes and sloppiness) they can win this game absolutely.

It was really a lucky guess, but don't tell my bookie. Houston annihilated Dallas in preseason + Washington barely beat Dallas last week = Houston barely beats Washington.
I'm pulling for the Giants also!

Ah well the Giants are my team soo
Yeah like I said the Colts are so unbalanced (Addai's really good year is when they won the SB...) and from what I see the Colts offense is really not very difficult (being polite). Shows just HOW good Peyton is too keep them so good! I digress
G-men need to get the D settled first. Then the run game but if not, Eli and the receivers can more than make do.

I haven't really scouted NY, but it's the same old story with the Colts.... weak against the run. I hope NY has a good running game. I guess the brother against brother thing is interesting, but the Colts are division rivals of Houston so....

I watched the most ugly game I have ssen in a long time Rams at Raiders. Must have been 6-8 personal foul calls in the game.

The Colts also make me ill. And yeah Im an old school guy, love attacking defense and running.
Both have been largely abandoned and increasingly so... Just started I know...but Colts first drive Giants brought just the line and were using 5 and 6 DB's Why abandon who you are and what works?
|
Posted By: JJLehto

Well, the Giants f**ked this game up from literally the first play
Came out with only 1 LB and using 6 DB's??? Of course the Colts ran like crazy against that! Not only is Peyton too good for that, he'll pick anyone apart against that coverage, but they are an attacking defense! They did alright when they went back to a 4-3 but by then down 14 points.
I wonder what on Earth these coaches think somtimes Ah well. 1-1 to start the season.

Aren't blitzing!? They didn't even start using a 4-3 until nearing half time If they lose, they lose...but didn't even try.... Just let the Colts run all over them, and who wouldn't? I mean They stopped the Pats in 07 with attacking, so do the Jets today. WHY abandon that? Giants actually did better when they started using the 4-3 but by then they were already down 14....
Like I said, they f**ked this game from play one.

You have to attack JT's BF or he'll rip you apart. One of the greatest myths in football today is that blitzing Peyton is a bad idea. Roll tape back on the 05/06 (05 season, game was played in 06) divisional playoff game in which Dick Lebeau's blitzing 3-4 defense embarrassed The Media's God. Hell, if it weren't for one of the worst rullings in NFL history the game would have been a complete laugher. This was back when he had a better o-line, as well, so it makes even more sense to blitz him today. Get the guy out of the pocket and he's average.

Dude you're telling me? I said it in my own post...how did they Giants shut down the most potent offense of all time in the SB? How are the Jets still beating the Pats today?
Gotta blitz.
I know the fear of blitzing against these passing teams... but if you can do it, we've seen it works and this 4-1-6 thing doesn't. That's how the Pats got 16-0 and Brady became god. Their toughest games were against the Eagles, Ravens and Giants all blitzed him. I'm just peeved is all...Giants pretty much didn't start playing until the second half.

Well....that and CHEATING. Funny, doesn't seem like anyone mentions that anymore.

Well not mentioned anymore because, well we all know it
But really. Teams still gave it to them. Let Brady throw it 5 yards at a time for 50 times.... No wonder they were unbeatable when you let them win. OH and when you get penalized for being within a yard of Tom Brady
Anyway that Giants game is long turned off. They deserve to lose for 1) giving that game away and 2) not being themselves

Dump pass to Welker, dump pass to Faulk, 5 yard slant, screen, screen, short slant. I hear if Brady throws more than 3 passes over 10 yards in one game his arm explodes. I mean, for Christ's sake, Kevin Faulk has been a major contributor in their offense for 10 years. Kevin Faulk! Ten years! I mean, come on, the guy wears modified-oven-mit elbow pads.

The Lions - Eagles game was really good yesterday. It was too bad that the Lions couldn't move the ball on their last possession and ended up losing 35-32. Goes back to the first half when they had 3rd and 1 in field goal range, couldn't get a first down and instead of kicking the field goal they went on 4th and 1 and got stuffed again. I really, really hate how conservative coaches get on short-yardage situations. I know that it is probably the safe bet but it seems more often than not the running back gets stuffed in the backfield just because of all of the bodies on the line. I always advocate spreading out the offense and defense and making more room for the running back to sneak through, and also make the passing play an option.

Steelers are looking good even without numbnuts in at quarteback.
Dallas is 0-2 to start the year . Sorry i'm sure there are Cowboy fans out there.Good news is that they have a weak schedule. Kansas City won yesterday?! 2-0 to start the year. Lots of talented young guys but it's hard to imagine them keeping this up very long.Good to see though.

Cowboys are, always, over rated. I mean they look good on paper but for whatever reason they always fall apart. And they have these random games where they look just utterly disorganized and weak. Coaching staff, underachievers (I mean they took OT Alex Barron who is an alright tackle but VERY penalized) Dallas culture now? Who knows but the Cowboys are fail.
That being said, I love the Saints. They are such a pass heavy team but they DO run the ball a lot, and right up the middle...no dancing around. This game just started and you can see why the Saints have to be a favorite this year. 4 receivers all good, tight ends, backs all catch the ball. They have the multi back system and can run it right at you. GREAT O-line and Brees is accurate and so elusive. Sometimes 4 wide, sometimes 2 TE, sometimes extra linemen they always give different looks. What an awesome team.
Defense plays surprisingly well
