Subject: The Pretty Things not on PA?

I went to search for S.F. Sorry by the Pretty Things just assuming they were on PA. Apparently they aren't. I don't see how this makes sense, they're easily proto prog. They released one of the earliest rock opera's of all time, and worked with concept albums. They always sounded like a more progressive version of the Beatles to me, how are they not here?

1) maybe they weren't suggested yet or 2) maybe they were rejected
Posted By: himtroy
Date Posted: August 16 2010 at 14:28
Well they should be suggested, what is done to achieve such a thing?
And if they we're rejected that's ridiculous. They're a much greater example of proto-prog/prog related than many of the "classic rock" bands that are included in proto prog/prog related. Their album S.F. Sorrow being the main arguing point.

That would be appreciated. Thanks

While they have been discussed, they've never been formally proposed or rejected for Proto-prog as far as I can remember.
Given the significance of PF sorrow, which is often cited as the first concept album, they would seem like a good addition to me (personal view, I think I'm allowed one!).

I don't know why everyone goes on exclusively about SF Sorrow. 1970's Parachute is arguably even stronger and also progressive.

Great stuff.

Yeah, I agree that Parachute is a better album, but I was hoping the earliness of SF Sorrow would help get people behind this. It seems to me that they would fit in quite well.

I support them fully for proto-prog. They were a huge part of the proto-prog movement IMO.

So does anyone want to volunteer to do the work to add them? If so, I'll ask the Admin team for a decision on their admittance.

Can member, or mere Collaborator, or Prog reviewer do it by himself, or does he has to cooperate with Special Collaborator in order to propose / succeed with Proto-Prog band Bob ?

Has to be an SC doing the proposing and adding Marty. If you want to write the Biog or add the the discography then that's no problem

I can give them a listening (Parachute album), but let's give our FORUM SENION MEMBERS opportunity to earn their credit as well.
Who of you guys wants to try doing biography, get photo somewhere through google.images.com and then seek info and add biography once they'll be added ?
By the way, what subgenre ?

Thats 006.5 %Marty we are talking Prog Related but don't do any work until someone ( Sc) sends the application to Admin for approval. I do not know enough about these guys so will leave it up to another SC.
EDIT: PROTO PROG

I myself found them today, so I'm not the one suitable to handle their addition, but if they'll be found worthy of some of our Prog (or almost Prog - PROTO/RELATED) categories, I wanted to give chance to members here to help. Outsource our work a little bit, give them a hint what's our daily bread (most of us does few biographies on weekly basis) etc.
But what do you mean Dean by double O and what do you Chris mean by 006.5% ?
Indeed, SC has to send application, as in case with Stewart Copeland and Ray Manzarek is currently going on. Who will it be, that's not so sure as of now.

007 is James Bond - "Do pay attention 007" is what "Q" says to James Bond when he shows him all the wizz spy gadgets.
I was making a joke while making a point. Bob has already volunteered to be the SC proposing Pretty Things for Proto-Prog.

Yeah unfortunately I don't think I can contribute much. I have two of their albums, but don't really know much about the band or anything. I just knew their sound and thought it belonged here.

Agree -- just "discovered" the Prettys myself, a few months ago. I now have Emotions ('67) and Parachute ('70) -- great albums. (I want "Sorrow," but the original version is not on Itunes.)
With concepts, psychedelia, strings, etc, a shoe-in for "proto" or "related," IMO.
I especially recommend Parachute to fans of classic rock (such as The Kinks) -- prog or otherwise.
I missed them "back in the day" -- they were not at all well known this side of the pond. Pity.

So that's it :-D I saw most of Bond movies when I was young, so with Czech dubbing (as our foolish TV's dub everything), so I know this line as "Dávej pozor agente 007". + I always confused characters 0 & O, as they look almost the same, so I thought that you said double OO. Smile used in this case would probably be (obvious) O_o
Too overcombined Dean, like plot of very complex movie.
OK, 5 stars equals 5 stars, they have the same adding privileges, but I forgot that admins add bands too, as it's not happening so often (except you, John Easy Money etc).
I listened both mentioned albums, I thought and I'm unsure. Proto ?

Enough people here think Proto and Bob is going to propose them to the PR-team to evaluate, further opinion is interesting, but won't change anything.

I heard the Pretty Things were good, but I didn't do my research and I ended up getting Savage Eye, since it was the only one the record store had. It's terrible. I want to check out S. F. Sorrow or Parachute, but I'm reluctant after my bad experience with Savage Eye.

^ Their first two albums are run-of-the-mill 1960s british R&B Beat combo stuff (two early singles were covered by Bowie on Pin-ups). The next 'Emotions' saw them go Psyche-pop like many of those 1960s R&B bands, SF Sorrow and Parachute are a culmination of that move towards psyche - personally I think SF Sorrow is over-acclaimed, it's okay, but not great. Anything after Parachutes is best avoided.

SF Sorrow is a concept-album released in 1968. What is surprising is that it is not proto-prog but really prog !

I happened to notice that their song Private Sorrow-Balloon Burning was on the Supernatural Fairy Tales compilation so for the heck of it I checked PA to see what category they were in and saw that they aren't included. Additional research found this thread from a year + ago. Just curious if anything further was decided regarding this band and whether proto-prog or psychedelic prog was an appropriate category for them.

Bumping this one ever so slightly, as Fruits de Mer now have a tribute album out - SF Sorrow given a run through by 13 different contemporary bands, of which a few of the contributors are in the PA database.

okay - Pretty Things now approved for addition to Proto Prog.
Whoever writes the Bio can leave it here. Since anyone can add an album we'll leave that to whoever wants to do it, either in one go or piecemeal, however, I suggest we have all the details for SF Sorrow and Parachutes before the addition as they are the ones most people will want to review.
