For about six months now, my Internet connection has been unreliable. BT is my service provider and my download speed is 2m. This had been perfectly sufficient for the last 4 years (ever since I got my current laptop) I'm still running Windows XP.

I'm not unable to watch anything on Youtube. The clip starts playing and then just stops and endlessly buffers. I cant watch BBC IPlayer for the same reasons, indeed, anything that requires any kind of 'Flash player'

My question is, does this sound like a download speed issue?

I have tried the following:

1) Using different browsers (Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer 8) IE8 was by far the worst!!

2) Defragmenting my hard drive

3) Running registry clean up tools

4) Running numerous virus checkers

I may just need to change my ISP, but I'd like to make sure there isn;t something easy I can do first.

BT are a bloody disgrace mate. The problem is their "up to" claim...it coukl mean anything.....try testing your REAL speed.

I'll give you a link soon.

http://www.speedtest.net/ - http://www.speedtest.net/

I had a freind with BT and his speeds were nowhere near waht should have been. And he complained again and again to no avail.

I'm with Virgin...one of the best braordband providers around for speed.

You can go to http://www.adobe.com - http://www.adobe.com and try to update your flash player, if you haven't done so already.

1. Could be malware. A lot of the machines I fix have spyware and malware problems related to internet speed.

I'd run malwarebytes and superantispyware. Both are free. If they find anything I'd also run CCleaner- free also.

2. Do you run any P2P. Torrent clients are notorious for setting up a default upload limit (not download) that is too high. This slows internet to crawl because because your packets received can't be acknowledged as being received. If no P2P this is obviously not the reason.

3. Have you complained to BT that your speeds are low. You may have a line problem.

Good luck with complaining to BT..but check your speed first......listen to Iancc

Tsk! He asks for advise then buggers off!

I think you need to upgrade your line Andy. Unfortunately 2Mb means "up to" 2Mb which clearly includes bugger all. Try the speedtest site than Ian gave the link for. I'm on a 10Mb connection which is currently showing as being around 6Mb! However I can generally watch YouTube and iPlayer ok.

Personally I would switch to Virgin - even though they're crap at times (when I had problems at the end of last year they just blamed it on my router) they use fibre optic cables which can be upgraded more than the phone lines that BT use. You can also switch your phone and TV to them as well in one package.

I use the Firefox browser but that shouldn't affect things too much.

You could also try the Microsoft Network Monitor tool (which is free) to see what's going on with your connection. Are you using a WiFi connection? Is it secure?

btw - I've just found out where your sig quote comes from!

If you have a 2Mbps line but in reality you have lower bandwidth, upgrading to a 6Mbps will most likely not change anything - the limitation is caused by the quality of your telephone line and usually depends on the distance (length of cable) between your DSL router and the access point, and on how many people (households) are sharing the cable.

Switching to Virgin would resolve that though.

Oops, I'm starting to sound like a Virgin salesman. Confused

I would also suggest a free download program called CCleaner - I doubt it will help your Internet speed but it will get rid of some of the crap on your PC (that's what the first C stands for).

I use TalkTalk as my ISP after experiencing nothing but trouble with BT. I find TalkTalk dead cheap with a decent enough download speed. I also clean out my computer on a regular basis with AdAware and Avast. All this is free and highly recommended.

It will not change anything if the problem is related to your telephone line. But of course there may be ISPs which have bandwidth problems of their own, and in those cases switching your provider will obviously help.

Virgin don't use  telephone lines they have cable layed.

Virgin laid all their cable (as CableTel) years ago....if you are not in an area where it was laid then you simnply can't have it. Probably LOndon and all around there has been done though. Blacksword will know.

Trouble with Virgin is you get the full Broadband, TV and telephone package and he might not want that.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I suspect it is download speed that is the problem. 2mb had been sufficient up until 6 months ago. I've not yet complained to BT, and by the sounds of it that'll get me nowhere! A few months ago I consulted them on another issue relating to what turned out to be a trojun, which wouldn't let me get to my desktop. They were insistent it wasn't a virus of anykind, but I ended up Googling a fix from another PC. It was a very well know virus that was doing the rounds, their support team should have known about it!! I fixed the bloody thing myself, and I'm hardly Mr IT.

I tought for a while it may have been this virus, that was causing the problems but I had 'apparently' successfully removed it, and all the virus checkers I ran didn't detect it, so I guess I'm in the clear with that.

Ian, thanks for the speed test link. That will be my first check, I think. I'll then go to war with BT. I'll see how much it is to get out of my contract. Virgin has been recommended by others too. Everyones experiences with ISP's seem to differ, as they do with makes of cars! I get junk mail from Virgin every week. Maybe 'll read it next time.

Mr ProgFreak I installed the latest Adobe Flash Player yesterday, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Really? I thought 1.46 would be well under par. My computer is quite old ( about 5 years old)

Regards Virgin, NTL laid cables in our area about ten years ago. I believe Virgin took over that network, when NTL fell apart, so the cable network is available to me.

Is that malware checker completely free? I'm always dubious of anything that claims to be 'free'

I have a 2mb connection, and I'll only upgrade with BT if they don't charge me any more money each month, and I don't suppose that'll be the case. For my line rental, broadband and calls they already charge me over £50 per month, and when you consider all my weekend and evening calls are free and that's the only time I make calls!) you can see I'm paying through the nose. Switching to Virgin would be preferable.

That sounds a lot. I get the full Tv package (loads of channels i dont even watch) phone and  10Mb broadband for slightly less than that. Not sure my calls are free though but yoy can investigate that.

If I remember correctly is was 'up to 2mb' So max, I guess.

As I said in my reply to Ian, my computer is getting old, and this problem only really became an annoyance about 6 months ago. Before that it was running ok.

I have noticed though, that since switching to Safari as my browser, last week, I don't actually lose my connection, as I had been frequently with IE8. So, I think that switch has helped.

It depends. 1.5MBps is his current bandwidth but that doesn't guarantee a certain speed, just the maximum. If you try this speed test it will actually put your PC to load a picture and it will take you how long it took and what was the actual speed:  http://www.evoda.ro/speedtest/ - http://www.evoda.ro/speedtest/

For example the first speed test told me I have a bandwidth of 11.5 Mbps, but this second test showed me that the download speed I had for loading the picture was 0.2Mbps.

Try the free version of AdAware, Blacksword. Download it for free from http://www.download.com - www.download.com

When it comes to anti-virus and malware protection, the best versions is actually free downloads (for homeusers). Both the very expensive Norton and McAfee is pretty bad compared to Avast, Avira and AVG.

Windows own firewall is also sufficient enough. Install Windows Defender too.

Wow. I also tried this software and it showed 0 infections at the quick scan.

I guess what I'd do would be to reinstall Windows with formatting the partition that hosts it.

I think I will explore other options. I'm very cynical of these packages. If you buy something like this and it doesn't make any difference, you'll not get your money back, plus they will probably make you subscribe and jump through burning hoops to cancel the subscription.

I can't help feeling that the trial version is set up to only fix a set number of errors, leading you to believe that that is all the trial version is capable of. It's the difference between can't and wont!

Sorry but Malwarebytes is a great program. Saved a PC using it and had no insistence to buy anything. AdAware is Ok but won't fix all problems.

The connection speed is also dependant on how far you are from the exchange. Are you using the main connection in your house (ie the main input where the phone line comes in?) Are you using BT approved cable? If you've got a test socket on your main connection box, try plugging your PC straight into the test socket........some Sky users reported an increase of 400 - 500% by changing the main socket for one that uses filters in the actual socket, rather than using filters on every connection point.

If you DO change ISPs, I wouldnt reccomend Sky, under ANY circumstances.

Heh....just done a distance test on my own PC.

ATM, I can get 4MB, max, but if my house was 10 feet nearer to the exchange, I could get 8MB.

Ouch

I want to see what others think but 1.5 out of 2 is not bad I think.

Ok, I'll run that now. Cheers!

Use the Perform Quick Scan option.

It detected over 600 errors! It was able to fix 110 of them. If I want it to fix the rest, I have to buy the package. I'll see how much it is.

I'll see if what it has done makes any difference first.

Sounds like it may have put 600 errors on there, before detecting them. It's not the first time that's happened.

If you use Windows, download Microsoft Security Essentials. It's totally free and keeps your PC clean of Spyware, Malware, Adware, Viruses.

Or Spybot - Search and Destroy does a similar job and Immunizes your browser from downloading dodgy stuff.....Trojans, etc.

When it comes to anti-virus and malware protection, the best versions is actually free downloads (for homeusers). Both the very expensive Norton and McAfee is pretty bad compared to Avast, Avira and AVG.

Windows own firewall is also sufficient enough. Install Windows Defender too.

Windows Defender has been superceeded by Microsoft Security Essentials. Both use the same detection routines, but MSE does much more than Defender. You should update.

BTW, a free download does'nt equal a free program......in most cases, it just means that you can download it for free (no charge for the download), but once you install, you're expected to pay for the program.
I've been caught a thousand times, like this.

Unhappy Wink

ps : AVG was compromised last year by hackers......this led to a virus being sent out as part of the detection routines that AVG uses, so it went undetected for 6 months. Personally, I don't have a lot of faith in programs that come from Eastern Europe.

Really? I thought 1.46 would be well under par. My computer is quite old ( about 5 years old) Regards Virgin, NTL laid cables in our area about ten years ago. I believe Virgin took over that network, when NTL fell apart, so the cable network is available to me. Is that malware checker completely free? I'll give that Microsoft package a go, and Spybot. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks to you all for your advice. I'm starting to think, as Snowie suggested, the problem may be with my computer though.

I'm running XP (Service Pack 3) so yes, MSE should be fine on my system. I currently downloading it. It's taking bloody ages. Seems stuck at 821KB of 7MB! Estimated time to download 1.2 hours. I'm guessing this is down to my slow download speed.

Should I stop the download, re-boot and start again?

Not sure. Is it still stuck?

No, the installation has completed successfully. I did re-boot.

Next possible problem: It's currently downloading the latest updates, which is taking forever. The progress bar moves very slowly. My internet will not stay connected for long enough for the updates to download. It doesn't appear to resume where it left off, when you re-store the connection either. It's making reasonable progress on this run.

For MSE to work properly other anti-virus programs need to be removed, so I'm removed my Norton software, and cancelled my subscription. If these updates continue to fail, I wont be able to run an MSE scan, or schedule a scan. My computer is therefore at risk until I can. If this fails to work I'll have to un-install it, install something else in the meantime like Avira, and then get on to BT to increase my download speed, or change ISP of course.

It seems the connection has greater 'staying power' if I'm simultaneously using the internet, while the download is taking place, but I can see absolutely no reason at all why that should be the case!

The more I think about it, the more I believe your router may be the problem.

Do you?

I do have a router. It may well be the problem. Loss of connection is restored when I turn it of and on again, so yes logical, in light of the download speed check I done the other day which indicated 1.7m, out of a possible 2, which with the max as 2, is perhaps not bad, as Ian suggested. If MSE doesn't pick up on any problems, then it will be time to get on to the ISP.

Is it possible the fault may be with my network port on the computer, or something silly like a damaged connection in the ethernet cable? That would be the first inexpensive thing to try I guess.

have you tried unplugging your modem and router for five minutes and then plugging them in again?

Have you cleared all internet temp files?

The scan didn't find any problems either. I'll get on to BT.

Don't hold any hope if you call them. They are mostly reading from scripts and if your problem does not fit that script, which I don't think it does, you will be put on hold for ages when the lady/man in India ask his supervisor. It took me one hour last time. I resolved my problem by jumping ship to another ISP.

What modem/router are you using? for example i have broadband at home. I checked the ISP for line quality issues. YT dropping out and crap buffering. Anyway I went to my Asus router settings ( cos we mostly use wireless verus LAN) and all the default settings had " Internet Browsing" as third priority, not High Priority. So I made a few changes/applied them. My download speed went from 100KBS to 650 kb/s- 1Meg. My YT functionality is 20 times better. My speed test/Ping test went from grade F ( Poor) to B+. So just saying if you have a router this may be your problemSmile

This sounds interesting. I have a BT voyager, if that means anything. I've just gone into my 'Router Manager' and the sort of settings you're describing are either not visible in any of the menus or are inaccessible to the user.

Log into your router through it's IP address. The password is your user password. Check it's settings.

I do that all the time on my router.

Checked my settings and they're fine.

However, I have just spoken to BT and described the problem. They say that my router, although not faulty is sub-standard due to it's age. They've given me a number to call, to get a new one free of charge, and apparently a discount on my bill!

You're not using any ad-blocking software, are you? If I use an ad-blocker on my router-settings page, it hides most of the panels.

It's supposed to arrive today. I gave them instructions to leave it with a neighbour as I'll be at work when it arrives, although I expect it will end up at the post office, and I'll have to collect it tomorrow.

The new hub arrived yesterday. I've installed it and it works. I'm pleased to say I remained connected to the internet for the whole evening, and was able to watch endless Iplayer/Youtube clips with NO buffering. There has also been a slight increase in speed when loading a page, but my main gripe had been the loss of connection and the inability to play clips. So, I'm a happy man!

They also sent me an 'Accelerator' which I have to install into my phone socket in the wall. I've yet to do this. I'll do it at the weekend, and do a test to see if my actual download speed increases significantly.

Three cheers and many beers for the progarchives IT helpdesk!
