Prog Metal: Illiteracy

(I have yet to hear any prog metal with lyrics of a good calibre. I sort of hope to be disproved. And Opeth don't count, because a mass of randomly selected dark imagery is not good writing. It fits the music, but it's not good writing... Arcturus don't count because writing in an educated way about dumb things is still writing about dumb things)

^ Agree on prog metal.  It is certainly my least favorite prog genre, and that shows alot because I listen to quite a bit of it LOL

Tell me that the lyrics to Dream Theater's "A Change of Seasons" (written by Mike Portnoy) aren't f**king brilliant. Granted, many DT songs have weak lyrics; but "Seasons" certainly doesn't.

Hm. I've just read them, and I'll reserve judgment until I've heard the music. 'f**king brilliant' aren't the words I'd use at the moment.

He seems alone and silent
thoughts remain without an answer
Afraid and uninvited
he slowly drifts away

Moved by desire and fear
Breaking delicate wings

Lifting shadows off a dream once broken.
She can turn a drop of water into an ocean.

----

There was no time for pain
No energy for anger
The sightlessness of hatred slips away
Walking through winter streets alone
He stops and takes a breath
With confidence and self control

I look at the world and see no understanding
I'm waiting to find some sense of strength
I'm begging you from the bottom of my heart to show me understanding

I need to live life
Like some people never will
So find me kindness
Find me beauty
Find me truth
When temptation brings me to my knees
And I lay here drained of strength
Show me kindness
Show me beauty
Show me truth

The ways that your heart sounds makes all the difference
It's what decides if you'll endure the pain that we all feel
The way that your heart beats makes all the difference
In learning to live
Here before me is my soul
I'm learning to live
I won't give up
Till I've no more to give

----

Those are snippets from two Dream Theater songs. If you say that's not good songwriting, I would love to see your lyrical attempts.

Both Myung-penned tunes. Thumbs Up He's a fantastic lyricist; I wish they would let him write more lyrics. He also wrote the lyrics to "Trial of Tears."

No, I think the word 'gay' means cheery and happy, like kids jumping in puddles or whatever.  YOU'RE the own giving it a negative connotation, with your offensive comment there

Well, Baldjean and Baldfriede seem rather cheeful most of the time, but you're right. I shouldn't have generalized. Smile

Isis, Threshold of Transformation

I’ve arrived
City of
Lucid dreams

Before me
A building
Looms caked in
Inky grime

The act unknown
Actor in sleep
Here I enter
And here I see
The circle and
Bones made in haste

The winds to
Anoint the
Faithful

Amorphous specter turns
From old to new
Rests in faith beside me
We wait for the quiet fire
To be born and there it is
Embodied by a boy
His voice small and grey
Whispers smoke to the chosen

Upon our heads
He places crowns
Sewn with hiss and higher tones

The boy presses whispers into her
And they bathe in valley's pale rain
Rain
