Subject: Your brothers, sisters?
Date Posted: July 21 2010 at 20:21
I'm the only child. I'm fine with that, although I wouldn't mind having an older sister, let's say. I'm curious to know what are the typical patterns in our corner of the internet? Also, would you like that number to be different, or you prefer it as it is?
Also, are you the firstborn, the second, the youngest?
(There is no 'other' option. I understand some answers might be blurry - some of us might have half-brothers/sisters, or adopted ones, some of the siblings might have died at very young age (perhaps that's a subject to painful and intimate to talk about), some might be much younger/older, so you never co-habituated in the same family. Answer whatever you feel is right.)

I have a sister who's a little over a year younger than me. It worked out well for me, since we were close enough in age to be good friends for our entire lives.

I have a younger sister (consequently I'm the firstborn).
The interesting part is that my father married with 42 and we were born when he was 44 and 46; my mother was 16 years junior than him. Although the age difference between husband and wife was not uncommon for the 1950s their ages were unusual since people married around 20-25 yo then.
EDIT: I'm betting that the majority of us will be firstborn.

I have a sister who's 11 years older, and a brother who's 10 years older than me. I'm the little baby in my family . But I get along well with them now (my sister was tougher to get along with for some years), and have plenty in common with both, despite the fact that they were out of the house by the time I was 8 or 9.

Neat poll. I have an older brother and a younger sister (and then there were three? ). Haven't been in touch with the brother due to his bad behavior a few years ago. My sister and I get along well. Neither of us get along with the brother these days. My Mom came from a big family, six make that seven kids. My Dad only had one sister.

Interesting how many of the people here are firstborn. It appears to me that most firstborns are often more quiet and laid-back, as most proggers seem to be.

Also my four siblings (see page 1) like prog, from my oldest brother (4 years older than me) to my youngest (17 years younger than me). First I convinced my big brother (which was quite easy), then, when my sister became 12, she decided she was too old for ABBA and startet listening to VdGG instead. My two youngest brothers never had a chance; we fed them with prog from they were kids. OK, off topic, but I think it’s nice.

I wasn't sure...but thus far there have indeed been a lot of firstborns. I know I am more laid back than my younger brother, and while I like metal and he does like prog he seems to be more into straight up death metal and thrash metal and extreme genres. Maybe there is something behind this.

By blood, I have one brother (which is mildly surprising, considering my mom had 5 brothers/sister and my dad 7). (This is what I voted).
I have another brother and two sisters through my dads re-marriage. I don't know them too well. For a few years, I had two step-sisters from a long-time girlfriend of my dads, and I knew them much better (they actually felt like siblings because I grew up with them), but I haven't really seen them in years.
My girlfriend has two sisters and her and I have been dating long enough that they feel like my sisters. One is my age and the other is 7.

My street value is pretty low, you'd have to kidnap me several times, perhaps using some form of kidnap loyalty card so you could collect points each time you kidnapped me and then redeem them for cash or twice their value in air miles or something, then auctioning the air miles on eBay to generate the necessary cash. But then I eat quite a lot so if you kidnapped me you would end up spending all the ransom money on food and I'd bore you to tears with my endless stories of my time as a band manager so you'd probably just let me go or be forced to gnaw off your own ears just so you wouldn't have to listen to my mockney Michael Caine accent drone on about something mildly hillarious that happened to a band you've never heard of in some seedy little venue you've never heard of in some dire and dozy town you've also never heard of. On the plus side I'd get to see some nice wood-clad bungalows in a nice tree lined avenue (though I'm not really interested in counting cars on the New Jersey Turnpike if that's alright with you).

We didn't fight much except for my sis and bro a little. My bro and I did play a mean trick on sis when we were kids. She was looking for mom to dress her and we sent her out to a neighbor's house. She went out naked carrying her clothes. Rotten rotten rotten of us. I'm so glad she doesn't harbor any resentment.

The middle one has the crappiest tastes in music (actually he doesn't give a sh*t about music), but he's generally mainstream... don't see much of him, he's a ... don't like each other much... "Monsieur" is an engineer and thinks he should be treated with a special deference
the younger one is more in classical and calls much of my music that "weird jazz-rock stuff" (he actually likes some of it, like Bitches Brew)..; he's defintely more accessible, but you can't count on him too much...

My oldest brother listened to ELP and ELO. My middle brother listened to Genesis, Yes, Focus, Kayak, Jethro Tull amongst other bands. My youngest brother listened to Procol Harum. My sister listened to Bee Gees and French chansonniers.
My brothers very much influenced my later taste in music. But so did my sister, because I still like Bee Gees and French chansonniers.
