Subject: Bandcamp Recommendations

This topic is somewhat inspired by the CDBaby recommendations thread.

If you haven't seen them before, Bandcamp are a website that will hopefully soon replace MySpace - they allow artists to stream their albums, put their albums up for download in a myriad of formats, and sell their CDs. Furthermore, usually purchases of a CD on a Bandcamp webpage come with an immediate free mp3 download - a feature that I think will grow more important as time passes.

This thread is for users to recommend bands that they have found who have Bandcamp webpages. I will start:

Giraffes/giraffes -  http://giraffesgiraffes.bandcamp.com/ - http://giraffesgiraffes.bandcamp.com/  - I really enjoy these guys, admittedly post/math rock is not my strong point so if they're great or subpar in the genre I can't say, but they come across as great music to me.

Yeah, excellent. They allow the streaming in high quality, you can download the music in a broad range of formats (if the artist allows it of course), and if you're a blogger you can embed the player on your site.

Here's the album of an excellent new fusion/avant band, lead by a crazy young sax player, and comprises Magma's bassist and the guitarist from Jannick Top's band: http://electricepic.bandcamp.com/ - http://electricepic.bandcamp.com/

Sampling a couple of their tracks now, I'm enjoying this one Clap. Looks like they only have their album available for digital download though.

Hi,

I think I'm ready to see some separation in where people post their music ... youtube/myspace and all those is a hassle, because there is so much crap amidst everything else that it makes it more difficult all around.

One suggestion/idea would be to help take a "ProgArchives" (for example -- since they are more established and have a bigger history than most) and combine it with the ability/facility for these bands to showcase their music and not have to go to youtube-faceless!

The problem is a type of collusion and favoritism of course, but I doubt that a board with this much history would have that ... some reviewers might not be as gaga on it as others ... but in the end, it would help a lot of artists gain a better link to folks that might actually appreciate their music ... with the side effect that others won't because it is listed in a "prog" place -- but all in all, it would help locate music a lot better than most places do.

The other side effect is that we would kill Dream Theater with all the comments!Clap

There are a lot of sites out there for musicians, and the problem is the same with them ... divisions that do not clarify anything about the music ... but in my book, the majority of the music I have found in those places is not very good or worthy of the attention that we give here to some bands.

And that is only a comment to get the ire of musicians to get better and stop copying anyone or anything else out there!

-------------
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Bumping this thread because it seems that bandcamp has been growing and growing in popularity since. I think I've listened to almost 10 new albums via bandcamp this past week; if people post them it's so easy just to hit play.

A few I ran across just today:

The Monroe Transfer is truthfully one of the best post rock acts out there right now, they are highly recommended.

Luger is a great psych band yet very accessible, I think, so try them out.

And The Resonance Association (I think I showed you guys that one Tongue) is incredible with every release. The guys really know how to create atmospheric music reminiscent of a modern Pink Floyd almost.

Oh wow, this is just wonderful, and perfect timing too! I'm planning on doing a special episode of my radio show tomorrow playing nothing but free/pwyw tracks from bandcamp, but I was struggling to find any interesting folky stuff to drop into the playlist to balance out the more rocky/electronic stuff. That one was actually pretty pleasant music; it's too bad we never finished that EP.  Now the bassist is in BC, the drummer just graduated high school and is going to study music (he's actually fiendishly good), and me and the other guitarist are Engineering students.

I still listen to "Space Preserves" sometimes Cool

Have just come across this group -" Glorie" on Bandcamp. Their self-titled album is very much worth a listen and is downloadable  for free/name your price. The music leans towards progressive post-rock/experimental. I am personally impressed with this group and highly recommend their music!
They are listed on PA as cross-over progressive. Thumbs Up

Not strictly prog, but amazing skramz with some proggy turns if you're into that sort of stuff. First track is my song of the year so far.

Great!  Hmm, maybe I should actually say something about it... it's in the prog fusion vein, very influenced by the first Bruford and UK albums, with touches of Focus.  It's rather eclectic and hyper but also thematically unified, loosely structured as one large suite.  The production style is very classic and analog.  Or at least, that's all what I was going for Sleepy

Great new psych Krautrock band PAPIR. Recommended to fans of Guru Guru, Ash Ra Tempel, Future Kings of England and just music that is dripping down the walls with improvisation and acid.
They just released their second album called Stundum.

This is good.

+1

Just for some actual descriptions..

Dense, heavy prog rock with English vocals. Vocals are unique but not a turn-off in my opinion.
Dark mellotron and organ throughout.
3  eight minute songs with a 19min epic opener.

At Sea is a one-man musical project whose music is available for free download on bandcamp.  The first two albums are indie pop/rock, not prog, but album #3, "Reflections on Teun Hocks," is an instrumental work of progressive soundscapes, and the latest album, "Distortion," mingles At Sea's older indie style with prog to create a unique, progressive work.
I think these last two albums fit well under the "eclectic prog" subgenre, and I plan to suggest them for this site soon.
http://atseaband.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow -
http://atseaband.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow -
The music is characterized by the blending of various influences, idiosyncratic melodies, repetition (A LOT of repetition), and authentic, indie-like vocals. The music ranges from lush soundscapes with synthezizer and piano to raw, distorted passages which utilize clipping as a recording technique.
http://atseaband.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow -

http://atseaband.bandcamp.com/
I recommend trying out Snowstorm, Guitar Jam for the Lonely, and Landfills first, as they aren't as repetitive.  If you don't mind repetition (Magma fans, this is for you!) go right ahead and listen to the epic masterpiece "Alone."  Fans of instrumental music might want to start with the album "Reflections on Teun Hocks"

ps. sorry, some of my text seems to have gotten attatched to the link, or something.  If you can't access the link because of this, please post and say so, so I can post the link again.  I think it should work, though.

Thanks!

That one was actually pretty pleasant music; it's too bad we never finished that EP.  Now the bassist is in BC, the drummer just graduated high school and is going to study music (he's actually fiendishly good), and me and the other guitarist are Engineering students.

Actually I'd say that's a pretty good description - I like AES quite a bit and obviously we get the Mahavishnu comparisons a lot because of the violin. LOL

Trojan Horse have remixed their self-titled debut (Trojan Horse Redux). The new mix (along with the original) is free to download on Bandcamp and to my mind is an improvement on the original, bringing out the proggy elements much more for me. The CDR is £6 and well worth picking up if only so you can stress about how you are going to fit it into your CD rack!

For fans of Tool, Mastodon, Isis and King Crimson I would recommend finnish band Nauticus and their latest album "The Wait". Three songs from the album can be listened from their bandcamp-page.

http://nauticus.bandcamp.com/album/the-wait" rel="nofollow - http://nauticus.bandcamp.com/album/the-wait

"The Wait" is a seven song concept album with eight tracks on it, that was furiously written, composed, practiced and recorded within a period of two and a half years. An apocalyptic lyrical theme flows through an hour of experimental, psychedelic and visionary landscape of rock, metal and alternative. From the beginning the objective has been to make music that will stand the test of time and an album that takes the listener to a complete journey through out the whole release, not something you listen song by song on shuffle with your MP3-player. The band feels there is no need for over the top individual musical showmanship, as the aim is to bring forth a strong vision as a single unit. "
