Having only heard one 2005 release my default answer is Annihilation Of The Wicked by Nile. Not prog, but it's the best i can do i'm affraid. I may soon have Catch 33 by Meshuggah so that could change my mind. I'm hoping that once i get the next Opeth album that i'll be knocked on my ass. I'm really trying not to buy into all the hype though. I did that with the Nile album, waiting for something amazing that i had never heard before. I got something really good, but perhaps not as good as i expected. I'm still digesting it though, and it's hard to do that when ITCOTCK (which i got the day after) is dominating my ears

The best 2005 album will probably be the fourthcomming Opeth masterpiece, but I will recomend you all a great swedish band called Beardfish who will release their 2nd album in late summer this years, I've heard the promo and if you like Genesis (Foxtrot/Selling England), Yes (1969-1972) mixed with some Zappa och Crimson (who don't!) you'll gonna love this album. Happy, crazy, all-time-changing-super-prog at it's best!

Check this one out!

Good idea, since there will be a new Opeth release later this year, and I think it might be pretty high in progheads' Albums of the Year lists!

Finisterre - La Meccanina Naturale

That's pretty much the only album worth mentioning from 2005 but luckily there is still 6 months to go and a few interesting ones should be released before the end of the year.

Edit: Ouch, this was a 2004 album after all. Nothing good so far in 2005.

I still havn't heard anything better than the KINO album. The title track off Octavarium is great but the rest of the album mainly sucks. I also like the new Coldplay album!

I'm a huge constellation records/GYBE fan, and I can safely say that the new Silver Mt. Zion is the worst thing I've heard from any GYBE offshoot.  Too much of Efrim singing, not enough post-rock.

the new DT album isn't that bad, either

And I reccomend the new System of a Down album to you all.....it's a lot better than anything that most other more mainstream bands have done reccently.

Well that was my nu.jazz fusion choice. David Cross's album out next Monday, Closer Than Skin certainly the best new prog I've heard in an age - better than my favourite last year by IQ.
