I know this is a lame question, but how do you pronounce "zeuhl"? Is it simply pronounced as "zool", or what?

Just listen to Magma singing "Da Zeuhl Wortz Mekahnik", then you will know. The "Z" is pronounced like "ts", the "eu" is pronounced like the "œu" in the French word "œuvre" (French for "opus) or the "ö" in the German word "böse" (which means "bad"). There is no Enlgish word with that sound. You can hear it in this video at 2:30: -------------  BaldJean and I; I am the one in blue. |

I'm still not sure how to pronounce Weidorje actually. And Theusz is not pronounced how you read it either. It's more of a D sound. -------------

Re: zeuhl, I always assumed the German pronunciation rules would apply (so it rhymes with "boil", "coil", "foil", "soil", "toil" etc.), but I've heard it pronounced zool ("ooo" instead of "oi") in some Magma performances. I mean, despite the obvious Germanic origins of the Kobaian language, Magma is still a French band. I think the correct pronunciation is somewhere between 'zurl' and 'zoil', - there's a rather tricky diphthong in the middle - but I agree that in liver performance it tends to come out more like 'zool'. ------------- 'Like so many of you I've got my doubts about how much to contribute to the already rich among us...' I say "zay-ool" myself. I also say MDK "Mechanic Destructee Commando" and Kohntarkosz "Contarkoes." I don't know if that's pronounced correctly either. |

I propose an IPA in the biographies of those bands with tricky names to pronounce. Obviously you cannot do that for individual tracks and album titles but it's a start. Of course, with Kobaian words it's a bit harder but with well established languages it shouldn't be too hard. -------------

^ Hmmm, not a bad idea actually. As for the Zeuhl part. From what I've heard on Hortz Fur Dehn Stekehn West, the spelling in German would be: Züll, and in French Tsul(l). But my prononciation has always been Zéul.

That whole Zeuhl thing just sounds like West-Flandrian dialect to me, so I guess Vander has Flemish roots. Also his name suggests as much. I mean Vander? It's the same genitive proverb as "Van Der Graaf" and it means "from the ...". So I ask you, Vander what? There are plenty of names like Van Der Stichelen, Van Der gucht, Van Der valk and so on... But you can't just say "Vander". That doesn't make any sense! |

I'm so much not a sports guy but futbol is the only proper football, I mean we get to use our hands and stuff in US football... Not to mention we get to build really big stadiums at taxpayer's expense. They allegedly create jobs. If you listen to Mekanïk Kommandöh of the MDK album, you hear them sing zeuhl and pronounce it as /tsø(h)l/ Although they are not that consequent in their pronunciation: I've hear them say /zø(h)l/ as well on the same album... Frenchies, ay? Note that the (h) stands for a short time keeping the previous vocal and thus making it longer than if there hadn't been an h in the word. You can transcribe that fonetically as /tsø:l/ in that case, though I think this silent h does more than just lengthening the previous vocal it also denotes aspiration, if you'd ask me... Joren

By the way, maybe nice to know for the ones among you who care: "eu" is the official Dutch spelling of the vocal /ø/; though in Dutch you here the slide from more resulting in this /øʏ̯/ (in the case of a long ø), so it resembles more the Flamish "eu" /ø:/, I guess. Neus /nøʏ̯s/ (Standard Dutch for nose) Neus /nø:s/ (Flamish Dutch for nose)
