Shrieking vocals, riffery, pounding drums... all tantamount to a sub-Led Zep, Rush has never done anything for me. Somehow or another, I've acquired seven albums by this band. Aside from the Police-tinged "Signals," none of them has struck me as even remotely remarkable. The less we say about the despicable philosophical basis for the lyrics, the better.

So here's what I've bought over the years:

Fly by Night
2112
A Farewell to Kings
Signals
Presto
Roll the Bones
Test for Echo

Now, will somebody propose a way to approach these in a manner that will keep me from yawning and switching to Zappa or Crimson?

You're missing the best of them.

Of the ones you have, the only one I really like is Signals.

Moving Pictures is the album that got me into prog.
The Caress Of Steel is one of their early ones, and by far their most progressive
Permanent Waves is progressive but also has alot of catchy hooks into it.
Counterparts is their most underrated. No big epics and not much prog but its absolutely full of emotion and great songwriting.

Caress of Steel is my most liked Rush album.  The shrieky vocals, say in "Bastille Day", are all part of the fun (I like that track's rockin' punkiness). Interesting you have those, but not Hemispheres (which is what got me into Rush). I rather like Fly by Night, but don't care for the others in the initial list.

Do you have any Pavlov's Dog? Pampered Menial is a good albumI only mention it because Surkamp has a similar voice to Geddy Lee's, though I prefer Surkamp, and it might help to appreciate Lee's vocals.

I don't like Rush as much as Zappa or Crimson myself, but I can still appreciate Rush for what it is.

I don't plan on spending on more Rush, though. The question is... what does it take to appreciate the stuff I've already got?

Or you could sell them with a 30% percent discount, buy stuff that you really like of that money, and end up "on plus"! Smile

EDIT: btw like COnor said your Rush collection is not really well oriented. I would only keep A Farewell To Kings from those and add Hemispheres, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.

It either appeals or it doesn't. A new set of ears (ones that register different frequencies) or a brain transplant, maybe.  There's no reason why you should like what you have that I'm aware of.

Rush aren't that bad.  They're not my personal preference for a band I'd like to hear more of but the two albums I've heard are not grating at all.

I actually don't mind Geddy's voice now.

They just don't make music that really does much for me, from what I've heard.

So I'm not having a go at Rush, as Scott thought I would. Wink

I can appreciate this post......cause I have no desire to own any Zappa at all. To your point Zappa ranks high on my list for the yawn factor.

Spending on more Rush. I'm afraid it's true. That three-album run from Hemispheres to Moving Pictures is definitive and somewhat mandatory for any Rush fan. I'd say you started in the wrong places.

EDIT: then again, if you truly did not like parts of AFTK, there may not be any help for you.

Stop spending money on them. I'm one of their biggest fans on the site, but if you don't get them - you don't get them. Simple enough. They're not avant like Zappa or evil like Crimson. Sounds like they're not your thing.

A Farewell to Kings is the only one of these I really like, and even that is not nearly as great as Permanent Waves, Hemispheres or Moving Pictures. So I guess you should either get more of their albums or stick to Crimson and Zappa.

Sorry.  I hope that you had a spare pair with you.

I get the not liking Geddy's singing.  It was certainly an acquired taste for me, and he hits some notes on those early albums that still make me cringe, but for the most part I grew used to them and actually like them.  In regards to not liking Neil's lyrics I am sort of clueless there, as for the most part I love his lyrics, aside from the notorious Dog Years.  So from that standpoint I can't help you.  It does seem to me that songs like The Spirit of Radio and Freewill should appeal to you (both are on Permanent Waves) but what the hell do I know.

Watching the Rush film the other day there were some very funny music critics desciptions of Geddy Lee's voice ,the best being 'like a cat being chased out of a room with a blow torch up its arse!!'
As a kid I was actually convinced that the lead singer was a woman and said as such to a keen Rush fan which didn't go down well.

Anwyay appreciating what you have? Convert every album into MP3 form and then play the tracks randomly mixed in with other bands you like. This worked for me in the case of Gentle Giant and Porcupine Tree. If not then just stop flogging a dead horse and get rid of them.

As I've recounted before, Rush is ironically how I found PA.

I actually did not like them when I first heard them (1979-80).  They were in regular rotation on the AOR station here in Seattle.  Then I eventually heard Limelight and bought Moving Pictures.  As others have mentioned, it is a very good album, Geddy's voice -- which someone has described as Donald Duck on helium -- notwithstading.

That said, the tracks I heard from subsequent albums over the next 20 years didn't do much for me, though I started revisiting the band via the Retrospectives albums around five years ago.  I subsequently bought Feedback and Snakes & Arrows, both of which are decent enough outings.

To my surprise Rush -- even the early tracks -- sound much better now that I'm well into my middle age.  With all due respect to the band, who have progressed a long way from those early albums, I attribute this to three things:  1) my hearing ain't what it used to be; 2) Geddy's voice has calmed down a bit to my ears (see 1)); 3) they are still better that 90% of everything else that's out there.

I'm looking forward to their next studio album, but I'll be visiting PA looking for reviews before I buy it Wink

Listen to "Xanadu."  Then listen to "Xanadu" again.  Then listen to it again.  And again.  And again.  And...

If that doesn't make you like Rush, then you have my pity.

Having seen your taste form other threads, I would have never have recommended any of these to you. I consider myself a big Rush fan, but like none of these albums (except for some of AFtK).

I believe that Exit...Stage Left is the best example of Rush in their "prog" prime, a live album with great energy and inspired performances - includes fantastic renditions of Villa Strangiato, Xanadu, Jacob's Ladder...if these don't strike you in any way, then I'd move on.

Sometimes it means it's either just not your thing, and sometimes it means it's just not your thing right now. There are plenty of albums that I disliked at first, then revisited years later to find they were just what I was looking for (Miles Davis and King Crimson were like this for me)

hi, i recommend you get a copy of hemispheres, but as has been said,if you don"t get them, you probably won"t like hemispheres either! myself,i count it as one of my finest prog albums and they have never produced anything near it! but each to their own,we"ve all got our likes and dislikes.i actually stopped buying rush albums after grace under pressure,as their later work didn"t do it for me either! as i"m a musician myself,i understand the loss of ambition in writing capabilities when you get older! this is why so many top bands draw from their older songs when they play live-it"s often their best music.

A completely different taste in music??

You dont like them, so what? Moving Pictures is my favourite and I guess if you like Signals, you think MP is ok, but to be honest it;s hardly worth investing more money in band, who I really think you probably have the gist of by now. You've got albums from all their eras in your collection. You know what the Rush philosophy to making music is by now.

They're not for everyone....same can be said for King Crimson and Zappa.

Let's try some advice here:
Fly by Night
Get rid of your zappa-esque sense of humour and learn to laugh with Geddy's shrieking yeahs!
That's goofy humour for you!

2112
Rip to mp3 and just play the first 4 minutes and the last 2 of 2112 on constant repeat.
If that doesn't get your air-guitar up then you're hopeless

A Farewell to Kings
Stick to Xanadu and don't bother with the rest of the album

Signals
Brilliant album. My favourite Rush, but that's not the prevailing opinion IMO.

Presto
Roll the Bones
Test for Echo

Try to sell them for a few beers.

Read the lyrics for the song 'Second Nature.' They make what would have otherwise been pretty boring song into a really emotional track.
