Hello!

Prog music is sometimes accused of being introvert and focused more on inner feelings and thoughts. I think if would be a interesting poll to see in which category you would place yourself, are you an introvert or an extrovert?  This is of course a totally subjective question, but here's the general ideas of the the ideas of introvert and extrovert.

Here's the definition of the two states from Wikipedia:

Extraversion is "the act, state, or habit of being predominantly concerned with and obtaining gratification from what is outside the self". Extraverts tend to enjoy human interactions and to be enthusiastic, talkative, assertive, and gregarious. They take pleasure in activities that involve large social gatherings, such as parties, community activities, public demonstrations, and business or political groups. Politics, teaching, sales, managing, brokering, and acting are fields that favor extraversion. An extraverted person is likely to enjoy time spent with people and find less reward in time spent alone. They tend to be energized when  when around other people, and they are more prone to boredom when they are by themselves.

Introversion is "the state of or tendency toward being wholly or predominantly concerned with and interested in one's own mental life".  Introverts tend to be more reserved and less outspoken in large groups. They often take pleasure in solitary activities such as reading, writing, drawing, and using computers. The archetypal artist, writer, sculptor, engineer, composer, and inventor are all highly introverted. An introvert is likely to enjoy time spent alone and find less reward in time spent with large groups of people, though they tend to enjoy interactions with close friends. They prefer to concentrate on a single activity at a time and like to observe situations before they participate. Introverts are easily overwhelmed by too much stimulation from social gatherings and engagement. They are more analytical before speaking.
Introversion is not the same as shyness or the social outcast. Introverts choose solitary over social activities by preference, whereas shy people avoid social encounters out of fear[6] and whereas the social outcast faces solitude, but not by choice.

I'm a curious case of an introverted with moments of extreme histrionics. I guess I'm not that introvert when I'm around my close friends.

As for myself, I can be both. The nasty part is that I can easily switch from one to another for no apparent reason. (is there a doctor in the house?). That being said, I think in a way it could explain some of my preferences for the more mainstream part of prog and music in general which apparently enhances socialisation.

I can be both... but most people knows me as an extrovert person... of course, the rest of the people don't even noticed me, so... I voted for extroverted, but I'm shy... is just happens in different ocassions... thatīs all...

Erm, you like Magma though, and they're not quite the "mainstream part" of prog. LOL

I see myself somewhere in the middle, or rather, a mix of the two.  So, you could call me either an entrovert or perhaps an ixtrovert, which I like better just because it is more absurd sounding.  Kind of like Nigel Tuffnel being somewhere between a Mozart and a Bach, in other words, a Moch.

OOALH is in fact a track from 90125. But I emphasized it because very few folks around here like it. And it is not exactly prog, because we can tag it as mainstream. (among other thingsWink)

That explains your personality then. Tongue
After numerous years of study we have reached this very bizzare causailty between Magma and an introvert on one hand, and 90125 and an extrovert on the other.Geek Nobel prize for prog, por favor!

Introvert for certain.

In high school none of my "peers" were into prog.  A couple of my brothers friends (older) became my best friends and it had a lot to do with prog music as much as anything else.  If there aren't many people you can share something with you tend to become introverted.

Corny as this may sound, discovering this community has made me much more extroverted than I have ever been before.

Shyness is nice and
Shyness can stop you

Exactly this. Quite introvert, with moments of extroversion bordering on eccentricity.

Did you guys notice it was in the definition of introversion that you feel comfortable and non-introverted around close friends

Wouldn't spend so much time on forums if I weren't introvert Wink
That said, I try to be as as humorous as possible in my life, my job included, that denotes some extroversion I guess.

Hi, my name is Tom.  I like progressive rock, playing the keyboards and hanging out with friends.  One of the biggest thrills of being a musician was playing live, the way you could capture the entire audience with a well timed melodic solo or a correctly placed head shake.  I loved playing live...not to mention there were a lot of women to talk to.

While I've lost a bit of my hair over the years and don't get on stage very often, I've supplemented that part of my psyche by going into sales.  I pretty much spend all day talking to people and doing what I can to convince them to buy from me.  In my sales approach, I don't really try to sell them items as I try to sell them 'me'.  Once they buy 'me' then they just continue getting what they've always been buying, just from me instead.  I love making the connections that I do in sales.

Yeah, I'm not in the majority on this one.  Wink

I'm not surprised at all by the results, here. Anoying, loud people typically don't like Prog. Wink Tongue

I've been introverted for most of my life thus far (even though I'm still a kid, more or less), but at times I will come out of my shell and do something really 'out there' and/or humorous. But those instances are few and far between. Mostly, I just walk around town with a pissed-off look on my face, hoping I won't be required to speak to anyone. LOL

^ *laughs* oh, if that was for my benefit no need, I wasn't offended in the slightest.  See, that's the beauty of being an extrovert, half the time when people are trying to make a slight, we don't notice it cause we're too busy blabbing.  Wink

You remind me of my brother. LOL
I don't think I would be half the introvert that I am if he hadn't been born first and is such an extrovert.
