Vocalist Ronnie James Dio has died after a battle against stomach cancer.
Message from Wendy Dio
Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed
away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say
their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew
how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that
you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal
with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will
live on forever.
- Wendy Dio
Dio came to prominence after joining Rainbow and also went onto to record with Black Sabbath and the offshoot Heaven and Hell. One of the great rock vocalists he will be sorely missed.

of my mom's illness and passing, only a few years ago. We were lucky to
see him perform last year with Heaven and Hell. He seemed such a force
of nature... I just can't believe he's gone.

Oh my god, I didn't know he was sick. One of the most reliable hard rockers, especially in mid-80s when metal seemed to be on its last legs, those first two Dio albums were a bright spot after Randy Rhoads had died and the NWoBHM was coming to a close. Saw him with Sabbath for Mob Rules, in 1983 for Holy Diver, again in '84 for The Last in Line and then the small Angry Machines tour.
RIP

Amazing vocalist, the band "Heaven and Hell" has been rated by many as amongst the best heavy metal albums of all times. One of my favorites. I saw his live show in Minneapolis about 1989, when Geezer joined him onstage (the beginning of what would become Heaven & Hell, the band).
RIP, Ronnie, and thanks for the very cool music & lyrics!

We shared the same birth date and i'll never forget the summer of 1981 when i played that "Heaven And Hell" cassette all that summer driving around the beach. What a voice ! I remember Kim Mitchell talking about him a couple of years ago, talking about playing in the same Swedish festival and watching him up close and not believing how great he could sing even after all those years. He hadn't lost a thing.

What a terrible loss, the news of his passing hit me like a hard brick in the face, coincidently i have been listening to the songs "Wishing Well" & "Rainbow Eyes" by Black Sabbath and Rainbow respectively for the past 2 weeks,
Now, listening to the ending of Stargazer, Dio's closing lines have a profound impact on me:
"Time is standing still He gave back my will Going home I'm going home
My eyes are bleeding And my heart is leaving here But it's not home
Take me back He gave me back my will
Going home I'm going home
My eyes are bleeding And my heart is leaving here But it's not home But it's not home
Take me back, take me back Back to my home"

Horrible news. And just as he was entering a whole new and brilliant phase of his career with Heaven and Hell.
I had the good fortune of seeing him three times with Heaven and Hell - at Radio City Music Hall, Jones Beach, and Madison Square Garden. He was phenomenal - a uniquely gifted singer and intelligent person - he treated his fans like they were intelligent, also. An inspiration to know that at 67, you can still rock with the best of them - and still be one of the best of them...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ronnie James Dio, whose soaring vocals, poetic lyrics and mythic tales of a never-ending struggle between good and evil broke new ground in heavy metal, died Sunday, according to a statement from his wife and manager. He was 67.
Dio revealed last summer that he was suffering from stomach cancer shortly after wrapping up a tour in Atlantic City, N.J., with the latest incarnation of Black Sabbath, under the name Heaven And Hell.
"Today my heart is broken," Wendy Dio wrote on the singer's website, adding he died at 7:45 a.m. Sunday. "Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away.
"Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all," Wendy Dio continued. "We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us … . Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever."
Dio rose to fame in 1975 as the first lead singer of Rainbow, the heavy metal band put together by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who had just quit Deep Purple.
Replaced Ozzy
Dio then replaced legendary vocalist Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath in 1980 with the critically acclaimed album Heaven And Hell, considered by many critics to be one of the finest heavy metal albums of all time.
His on-again, off-again tenure with Black Sabbath touched off an intense debate among fans as to which singer was the true essence of the band — a discussion that lasted until his death.
'He possessed one of the greatest voices in all of heavy metal.'—Twisted Sister guitarist Jay French
He also enjoyed a successful solo career with his self-titled band, Dio, in between his three stints with Black Sabbath (1980-82; 1992; and 2007-2009), when the band toured as Heaven And Hell, to differentiate it from Osbourne-led versions of Sabbath.
Many of his most memorable songs revolved around the struggle between good and evil and he also drew heavily on medieval imagery in songs like Neon Knights, Killing The Dragon and Stargazer.
"He possessed one of the greatest voices in all of heavy metal, and had a heart to match it," said Twisted Sister guitarist Jay French, whose band toured with Dio since 1983, and was to do so again this summer at European rock festivals. "He was the nicest, classiest person you would ever want to meet."
Dio organized an all-star charity collaboration in 1986 called Hear N Aid to raise money for famine relief in Africa.
His solo hits included Rainbow In The Dark, The Last In Line and Holy Diver.

One great thing about his solo albums for me was seeing an unknown Vivian Campbell get such an enviable gig as lead guitarist. I'd been a fan of Viv from his days in Ireland as a Gary Moore follower, his great metal band Sweet Savage (early thrash pioneers), and on to at least two classic records with Dio.

Extremely shocking and sad news. I am extremely upset.
RJD was about the first rock artist I listened to, and I still remember the teenage thrill of buying Rising and listening to that incredible album.
When he went to Black Sabbath, they produced just about the ultimate hard rock album of all time.
RIP - one day we will listen to you live again and marvel at a true talent in heaven.

He was one of the people that got me into 70's and 80's rock, I borrowed Mob Rules and straight away loved 80's rock.
R.I.P. Dio.

That's an awesome article; I would expect no less from their columnists.

It's strange that yesterday on TV 'That Metal Show' was going on and it was the episode where Dio was the special guest alongside Geezer Butler. I loved how Ed Trunk and co. gave him so much respect and appreciation.
Rest in Peace Ronnie.
