This poll is inspired by a recent poll involving the first three Zappa albums (and also that I currently can't get enough of the early Mothers material). Since many members mentioned Mothers of Invention albums after the first three, I wanted to see what the overall favorite was! I know I left out some great titles (Lumpy Gravy, Hot Rats, Waka / Jawaka, etc), but I only included albums that were under the "Mothers" name.

One Size Fits All. I first got into the Mothers with Money and Weasels (man--that makes for a weird non sequitor), but my most beloved albums of the last ten years or so have been things like Waka, Grand Wazoo and, ultimately, One Size Fits All. The only thing that makes we want to qualify this is that while this is my preferred album it seems the least "motherish." By that point the use of the moniker seemed rather unnecessary and untrue.

1. Over-Nite Sensation (5 stars)
2. Roxy & Elsewhere (5 stars)
3. One Size Fits All (5 stars)
4. The Grand Wazoo (4.5 stars)
5. Burnt Weeny Sandwich (3.5 stars, though Little House I Used to Live In is surely Zappa's first true masterpiece)
6. Bongo Fury (3.5 stars)
The other albums, I either haven't heard them that much(Uncle Meat and Weasels) or just don't like them(We're Only in it, 200 motels).

If you are a fan of jazz, you really should check out Uncle Meat again. I didn't like it for the longest time, but then after hearing a lot of jazz (and playing a lot of jazz), one day it clicked and it is now probably my favorite early Mothers album.

That's always been my least favorite part of the Zappa catalog.

I didn't say I didn't like Uncle Meat, in fact I liked it, what I did say was that I haven't heard it enough to form a concise opinion about it.

I absolutely love most of these, but the one that has been in constant rotation over the last 20 years since I first got it is Roxy and Elsewhere.

You better buy some glasses my friend because One Size Fits All is there
Also, Zoot Allures isn't a Mothers of Invention album.

One Size Fits All for me... I don't even really consider it a true "Mothers" album though; it's got Zappa written all over it.

While I absolutely love a lot of those albums, Iīll pick Uncle Meat. Itīs one of the most unique Zappa albums. Weird, quirky and very demanding. I listened to this one a lot when I was younger and thereīs an otherworldy feel to Uncle Meat thatīs almost impossible to describe. If you havenīt listened to Uncle Meat yet, go get it.

One Size Fits All is always my choice. But it being my perennial choice also means many other great albums get slighted. Even of the era, Roxy and Overnite are fine albums. As we move, time-wise, from that era, there are many great albums, looking backward to the Flo and Eddie years as a low point (but also capable of producing the incomparable Mud Shark), and forward to Lather, where ol' FZ is just kicking ass. The later-day Mothers (Uncle Meat, Burnt Weenie, Weasels) is incomparable. We can all be thankful that the guy was an absolute music workaholic.
------------- Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

One Size for me, although the actual Mothers-era for me would be the 60's and later FZ just used the name for several totally unrelated bands.

Burnt Weeny Sandwich gets my vote - some superb proto RIO instrumental rock bookended (for some inexplicable reason) by two spot on doo wop covers.

2. Overnite Sensation
3. One Size Fits All
4. Roxy & Elsewhere
5. Studio Tan
Thats MY choice....they ALL kick ass in their own way, tho. I like the music, personally....the early stuff just was'nt 'musical' enough for me....satire can only take you 'so far'.

When I'm lunching my father used to put 3 types of music, or Brazilian Popular Music to make mom happy, or jazz, or Over-nite Sensation. So the album was a important part of my life. Unfortunately Zappa
rarely is playing on my house now, just when I'm alone.

One Size Fits All. "Inca Roads" alone puts it at the top of the list.
Overnight Sensation gets special mention.
And of course, the first 3 albums are brilliant ("... MOM, I TORE A BIG HOLE IN THE CONVERTIBLE!")

This thread is a great reminder that I really need to get myself acquainted with The Great Wazoo. I'm a relative newcomer to Zappa's much who is trying to catch up.
