Liquid Tension Experiment?

Yup got it in one.

I'm a research engineer in my real life, interested in adhesion and more often why things don't stick. Goniometry (a method of measuring the surface free energy or surface tension of solids and liquids) is an important tool of our trade to help predict if combinations of materials will stick to each other.  I supposed there is a loose connection to what and how the band Liquid Tension Experiment play, isn't there???

I'm being slow and didn't recognise you as the author of your response until I had posted the confirmation of the right answer. Wanted to add, that I spotted your AH "All Night Wrong" review, and felt propelled to add my own, (which has been sitting in slightly different form on Amazon.Uk for some time) to reinforce your comments. Let me say I'm not trying to dog your electronic footsteps. My guess is that you have similar feelings about AH's music as I have, as well as things you don't like so much, e.g  the Synthaxe. The comments I made about Pat Metheny and guitar synthesisers, refers back to those Pat Metheny Group albums recorded for ECM - the trumpet effect played on "Are You Going Me" drops the tune from 10 out of 10 to 9 in my estimation. Elsewhere on the live double album there is a harmonica effect played - harmonica is my least favourite jazz instrument (but love it for the blues), and that track gets skipped. I think it shows a bit arrogance or pretence in the musician: Hey I can make my guitar sound like a tuba!!" So what, as Frank Zappa said: shuttup and play the guitar  - or otherwise employ a trumpeter  (as PM did in the end).

I think with Allan the synthaxe afforded him the ability to play a wind instrument rather than a guitar. He says he's restrained by technology, it limits his ability to play what he hears in his own head.  Allan always wanted to play sax, couldn't afford one, so he felt rather forced into being a guitarist. Funny that he didn't become a pianist since his father was a jazz piano player!!!

I do enjoy some of his synthaxe work immensely, especially on Secrets (my favorite AH album). Distance vs Desire from Sand is a very heart-felt expressive tune. Flat-Tire, however, requires too much concentration.

I agree about the amount of material being released by Allan lately is staggering, I haven't picked up "Then" yet, but I've heard it's awesome. With any luck the K-2 disc should be out soon.
