When you listen to progressive rock, how do you and your body react to the music? Do you like to bob/bang your head, play air guitar/drums/bass/keyboards, sing, dance, etc? I can't imagine listening to any of my favorite rock music without at least banging my head. I also love doing air guitar/drums/bass/keyboards... and even air flute and violin! And of course, I love to sing. If somebody put a hidden camera in my car, it'd be pretty entertaining to watch!

I dance to a lot of stuff whenever possible, from Magma, Gong, the groovier kraut, to Battles, Jaga Jazzist or even Tortoise. Nuke

I listen to music a lot on my Ipod on the train, so it can be a little embarrassing when I catch myself air drumming, headbanging, or whispering the lyrics softly to myself! lolTongue

I try to keep up with Koenjihyakkei, but I would have to have the booklet in front of me.

Yeah, they can be a bit quick.  I can't air-vocal or real vocal along with a lot of their stuff, but some of my favorite tracks I've gotten pretty decent at.

Yeah, Grembo Zavia is one of my specialties as well...same with parts of Lussesoggi Zomn.  Is it sad I know how to spell some of their track names correctly without thinking about them?  LOL

In headphones, loud, with appropriately colorful and moody lighting, and nicely baked. Energetic parts get the full air keys/guitar/bass/drums treatment, otherwise sitting back with eyes closed and letting it take me away...

Loud.  Very loud.

But that's just metal.  I've tried the air violin but it's very difficult.

I usually do a kind of dance movement while doing the dishes. With "Sprinkling Of Clouds" by GONG, I count in a primitive way. Technically it is incorrect but, it works for me and it's much easier to dance to or groove to when counted like this:......(wait until the drums come in)........

Outdoors, in nature, breathing in the fresh air, listening to prog on my iPod whilst walking my dog -  normally between 7.00 PM and 8.15 PM, come rain of shine.  After a hard and sometimes stressful day at work, this is my favourite part of the day....I wouldn't tell the wife that, though!

I get an indescribable pleasure of listening to this music. Incredible feeling captures changing times of listening to old records, or unknown to me. What could be nicer than to relive the exciting moments from PINK FLOYD to plunge into psychedelic equilibrium with KING CRIMSON around and once again around the world shoot with the caravan. why do I enjoy this music is because it still has something that really used to be associated with this word and not closed in the commercial framework for the sound track. she was still alive despite the fact that popular. it every time a new despite the fact that he loves to imitate others. I can not exactly say what most of all I love this music as a man can not speak for what most of all he loves his woman (If I suddenly wrote wrong please forgive me because I do not speak English and translate everything through Google)

When I really get to it...alone, (preferably)in the dark, without a hint of need to go anywhere, laying down, with coffee and I never forget to bring my sense of selfimportance with me when I really start progging out. That´s the way I like to take in my prog. :)

I listen to more music in my car than anywhere else, and there I'm the master nobody can stop me from singing at the top of my lungs. When I'm all sung out or when the solo's on I switch to whistling.

When it doesn't interfere with my safety on the road (and a little bit when it does) I am a very frequently an air musician; instruments depend on what's prominant. I would say I'm most often an air keyboardist and dummer with the occational guitar and sax thrown in for good measure.

It depends on the album you're listening to. I mean, when listening to Harmonium's Si On Avait Besoin D'une 5ième Saison, i close my eyes and focus in the beautiful and calmed experience it is; but when listening to King Crimson's Red or The Great Deceiver, I can't help air drumming all the way!Smile

The way I like it: take the lyric sheet (or whatever it's called in english Tongue), sit on my bed, turn the lights bit down, smell a bit of the nice flavor of a new, just-bought cd, and but the disc (preferably a concept album) to play.  Yep! Smile

And about these air-instruments.. Air Mandolin is cool to play (Mike Oldfield, eh?).. But still, nothing beats playing Air-Hammond in Ryo style Big smile

Well until you actually watched yourself, then you might be embarrased.  Sometimes I do the air instrument thing, sometimes I play along to the best of my ability or inspiration on an actual musical instrument.  Sometimes I just sit still and listen.

I enjoy my prog on vinyl.
 
However, if that's not available, my favourite way of listening to prog is in my car, at a volume which makes the wing-mirrors rattle.
 
The best song of all for that is "Supper's Ready", which I can time to a journey home, so I'm just sailing down the hill into my lane as the track finishes.

Mostly I sit in quiet.

Sometimes I lie in bed, for example when I'm really upset (I mean emotionally stimulated), and then the music sounds more powerful, too. So I should do it more often.

I think facial expressions is what people don't think much, so I almost forgot to mention it. Maybe i scrunch my face or something (I don't know what would be a suitable word).

Then I might be swaying/swinging like an autist (actually I have asperger's, lol, so...), and normally I'm in this kind of fetal position: http://www.dudelodge.com/CONTENT/BOXCOVER1S/MaleNudePhotography-ClassicFetal2008.jpg - also when I'm not listening to music.

Many times I'm also mumbling and whistling (in my own way). Mostly I do additional harmonies and I can follow many instrument's melodies at the same time, mixed/messed up :P.

Sometimes I sing, but I think it has something to do with movement and there's many ways to sing, from mumbling to knowing the actual words. Anyway, I also dance, but that's where the movement basically comes in. I mean, of course dancing is moving, but when I'm moving from place to another, or when I'm standing, I might start to dance. Also both singing and dancing are usually linked with happiness, because they require so much energy from me. For example it's hard to speak, but humbling and mumbling to myself is much easier. Sometimes I make very much crazy noises. If the volume is up, my volume becomes louder, too.

And of course I'm drumming, because I'm a drummer. Actually many times I start drumming immediately after the song ends, and when the music plays, I can stop the drumming. So that's one effect; making music when there isn't music. But when I'm drumming and music is playing, it's often "additional" drumming. Sometimes it's because the music isn't rhythmic enough. But the additional drumming can be anything. Sometimes I play drums similarly to the original drumming, but why would I play the same, when I can make the music more complex? And that comes unconsciously. Sometimes I do it consciously but then it's often imitating, and I can even do it to show people that I can play drums, lol.

And I can easily play percussion on classical music etc.

So I ruin the music. And I can ruin it otherwise too, like skipping songs and doing other things at the same time. But anyway I think it's even right to rape the music to get pleasure. It doesn't die, so you can rape it in some session, and then maybe listen to the same album the next week focusing in it in a different way. The more ways there is, the better. That's what I think usually. Sometimes some conditions can really ruin the music for good, but then there must be clearly some bad things happening. However, I can listen to any kind of music in any mood, and for example if I've listened to some music while being suicidal, I can listen to it later without pain. Or maybe there's pain but I can't say if there's a difference between some emotions, like between nostalgia, sorrow and happiness.

Music is basically an emotion army for me and I don't mind dying because of them.

So I enjoy my music in a some kind of bustle. Of course there's other ways and i use them sometimes, like laid-back peacefulness, but mostly it's the raping that this sleeping beauty needs. However, if the bustle isn't in the music or in me, but around us, then I can't enjoy it so much.

during the day, usually in my car, sometimes through my speakers if im home. more metal, rock, and generally louder music usually goes on during the day

at night, i turn the lights off, or dim them to a certain degree depending on what im listening to. depending on how late it is ill listen through my speakers, if not, headphones. any kind of music can go on at night, i enjoy a much wider variety of music at night.

then there's the times when you're drunk, that's a whole different beast of music listening. or stoned...

when it's nice out, i enjoy a walk around the neighborhood while listening through headphones. i like putting epics on when its sunny but cloudy and just look up at the sky, especially during more beautiful or 'floaty' parts of the music

Same here. I cannot hear music without reacting to it. In the car I mainly bang my head. At home, I dance, play air instruments, attempt to sing (as my wife would say), and many times cry when the music gets rich and emotive.

Air guitar/bass/keys/drums/violin/sax is what I usually do when I listen to rock music, that includes Prog.
 
If I'm in the car or on the bus, I just tap with my feet and move my head.

I only listen to music at home, and generally am always doing something else when I do (cooking, cleaning, tidying up, writing reviews...). I don't really play any air instruments, but like to sing along whenever vocals are involved, or sometimes even danceShocked

I guess it depends on where I am.  In my car, I usually try to also concentrate on driving, (otherwise I might go off the road) so I just quietly listen.  If I really want to enjoy a new album or one I haven't heard for a while, I will sit on the couch or bed and just listen with the speakers cranked.  I have actually found that the best way to hear music in detail is through headphones with no outside noises interrupting.  I usually do this just before I go to sleep.  Otherwise, I am usually doing something else as well as listening to music, like homework, browsing web, etc.

On the patio, enjoing a San Diego sunset and a cold Newcastle. Cigar is optional. Listening on the Bose wave player for iPods. Loud but not annoying the neighbors loud.

can't say 'how I enjoy my prog'  I just love music..and listen to it at home.. at work... in the car. Sometimes it is prog.. sometimes it isn't. No particular times or situation I listen to prog...  just depends on my moods and tastes at the moment.

unfortunately the only free time I usualy get is when i am driving. That is when I  truly LEARN all of my music. There is defintiely air drumming - well, dashboard/steering wheel  drumming since there is always a pair of sticks in the van - and also singing once words are learned.
 
When I do get to be at home I usualy listen while reading or studying runes. My stereo at home is very nice so I really cherish this time to dig into what is happening from a musical structural/textural standpoint.

I was at the local plasma donation center a few days back, jammin' to "2112" and "Hemispheres".  Also had Genesis' "Trespass" with me.  A worker came along and asked me what I was listening to that was making me play air synthesizer.  I gave him the headphones and started to listen to "Hemispheres" in all its glory.  He said that was the first time he'd ever heard Rush Cry.  I shook my head.  "You have much to learn".  Now he's a fan.Smile

ahhh.. air keyboards...  one of prog's greatest gifts and legacies to music.  Though I must say.. Rush wouldn't be my first thought for a air keyboard flurry of notes chords and arpeggios. Wanna have some real air keyboard fun... The Barbarian ..ELP.  Short but deadly.. more tiring than sex to play air keys with that.


hah....seriously though... playing air keyboards while driving will get you looks much more than air guitar.  It has a coolness that air guitar simply lacks.

I prefer singing to playing imaginary instruments, but sometimes I do it, too. It's really relaxing when I can sing all the time (for example when I'm home alone and time isn't close to midnight, you know, I live in minimalistic flat) and nobody's laughing at me. But what is really fun - when my boyfriend starts with twitching his head. It isn't so bad at all, but the problem is that the music is so silent, so low and restful. :-)

By the way, I'm still trying to play/make prog music with my very realistic guitars. I've found how to play some Pink Floyd's songs :-)

With a good bottle of wine and green cigars i can free-dance to most weird music like prog and zappa. Doing one thing is tripping the other thing funny and more dificult. You can always try another music why not?.

I listen to prog the way i listen to classical music-i just sit there and soak the music in-i devote my full attention to the music, and never try to combine any other activity, mental or physical, with the music-it is total devotion! If i am a bit tired for some reason, i will close m eyes, but i never drift off to sleep

Also these form is very relevant, specialy when your hearing a disc for the first time.
I was refering to extreme ( if could be call so) ways of enjoying some prog: avant garde jazz like zappa and Space rock.
Of course mostly i hear it sited or laid with eyes closed, in a introspective manner.
But prog expresionism if could be could be called that Clown Tongue is also possible and interesting ( and most important: great fun!).
