Who makes up your perfect dream band? The impossible supergroup!

You are allowed to choose ONE musician for each instrument, and ONE on vocals. Live or dead. I suppose if one of these are multi-instumentalists, there can be overlap (ie: same guy on two instruments).

Here's one of mine (it changes, as you would expect, with the bands im currently listening to!).

Guitar: Steve Howe

Bass: Tony Levin

Drums: Jon Theodore

Snyths:  Rick Wright

Organ: Jon Lord

Flute: Ian Anderson

Saxophone: David Jackson

Vocals: David Gilmour

I know, weird choice for a dedicated vocalist, but there's something about his voice that puts me at ease. Couldn't help but choose him.

So...who's got the ultimate dream band thought up?

Where would we be without the influence of Ian Anderson.
Flute is such a beautiful instrument and it works surprisingly magnificent in context.

What if our ideal band has a multitude of vocals and/or more than one person on a specific instrument? (For example, something like Magma with 2-3 female and 2-3 male vocalists, sometimes 2 keyboards, 2 drummers, 2 of others, etc.)

Point well taken.

My original intent was to prevent "cheating" as in, people who can't decide which drummer would suit their line-up better, and so pick 2....

But, hey, i'm no fascist! Do what you want.

Thanks Scott, but new people come on the site and want to discuss the same things people did in the past. I don't think there is a problem to that. I think always deferring to old threads would get kind of boring after a while.

OK.  Then I guess that I will stop Site Monitoring then.

You're doing a fine job Scott.

As John says, old favourites do re-appear from time to time, I guess all forums are like that.

We need to record a statistic of how many of these threads are created a year. That would be pretty interesting

I remember creating one once... I suppose it's just right of passage here

Well, i won't apologise! hehe

Since people use so many different combinations of words to name their threads, even using the search feature it can be quite impossible to figure out if the thread you want to start has already been made.

Well, I've already posted on 2 or 3 threads like this one. I just got a Renaissance CD a little while ago and that gave me an Idea:
- Annie Haslam on Vocals.
- John Tout on keyboards (I think his playing is very beautiful and he's extremely ignored).
- Ian Anderson on Flute and additional vocals.
- Martin Barre on Guitars.
- Greg Lake on bass and dditional vocals (I would just love to hear Lake and Haslam singing together).
- Carl Palmer on Drums.
I might just as well put Steve Howe instead of Martin Barre on Guitars, but I thought that it looked nicer to have 2 members from Renaissance, 2 from Jethro Tull, and 2 from ELP.

Steve Howe, Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Alan White or Bill Bruford, + pretty much any keyboardist :)

The yes-men are pretty much my top instrumentalists for each of their respective fields.

In other similar polls I have thought just about the same thing, but ofcourse I have my favourite Yes lineup well defined: Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman, Bill Bruford. All among my very favorites on each of their instruments.

I usually choose Jon Anderson, Steve Howe and Chris Squire, but then add Gavin Harrison and Kevin Moore to mix it up a little.

I'd be curious to hear John Goodsall replace Steve Hackett in the original Genesis lineup!

Goodsall, Gabriel, Rutherford, Banks, and Collins.

Similarly, the rumored union of Fripp with Yes after the departure of Banks would have been quite amazing, but it would have led to a totally different paradigm.

Steve Hackett wasn't on the original Genesis lineup.
I think I've also read That both Ian Anderson and Keith Emerson wanted Howe for their respective groups.

Oops, Anthony Phillips!  Damn, I keep forgetting him!

Those must have been amazing times, the Brits all hung out together & often swapped bandmates.  Here's a very cool interview with Peter Banks about the era:
