For starts, exclude the obvious such as KC, ELP, Genesis, Yes, Rush,
and so on. Let's say I really, really enjoy the following bands
and you should base your recommendations off of that.
Can
Comus
Faust
Gentle Giant
Brian Eno
Tangerine Dream
Algarnas Tradgard
Henry Cow
Univers Zero
Soft Machine
Camel
Popol Vuh
Neu!
*VDGG
Other bands I'm in the process of checking out, but haven't formed a firm opinion on:
Marillion
IQ
National Health
Magma
Guru Guru
Museo Rosenbach
Excalibur
Gordian Knot
Brainticket
Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso
Amon Dull II
-Thanks.

Also, if anyone can think of any non-prog, be it post-rock, electronic,
whatever, that would appeal to me, I'd appreciate recommendations. I
also listen to a broad range of Classical Music (the generalized use of
the term, from Baroque to some Modernists), Heavy to Extreme Metal,
*intelligent* techno music (no rave sh*t),Neo-Folk, some underground
Industrial, Celtic Folk, ambient/soundscape, 'loose' ambient, and even
some classic hardcore and early punk music. I tend to gravitate towards
music that not only excites me on a base level, but music that slowly
envelopes the listener over a period of repeated, close listens - music
that challenges perception - music that shows its artistic intent
first, and technique secondly. Checking out music, for me, is a full
time job. If I didn't have a job, and school, and a girl friend, I
would do little else than explore music...

I've heard a couple of songs. Mildly amusing.

Opeth - Definitely my favorite band. Prog death metal. Get the albums "Still Life" and "Blackwater Park" for starters, or if you'd like to hear their mellow stuff first and no death metal stuff, get "Damnation". Don't let the death metal brand scare you away, this is probably the most melodic death metal band you'll ever hear. :)
Ayreon - New prog from the Dutch multi-instrumentalist Arjen Lucassen. Some albums feature artists you've heard of for sure. Get the album "The Human Equation" for starters, and if you want something a bit more sci-fi, get "Into the Electric Castle", both are excellent concept prog albums.
Mellow Candle - Fantastic folk prog. They only made one album, "Swaddling Songs", released in 1972. Two female singers and it all just sounds very pleasant. :)
Renaissance - Symphonic prog, featuring male and female vocalists. Great stuff. Get the albums "Turn of the Cards" and "Ashes Are Burning".
Klaatu - Awesome prog rock in the vein of Beatles, some still think it's actually Beatles behind this. ;) Get the release "Two Classic Albums from Klaatu", it features both "3:47 E.S.T." and "Hope".
Even though they were already recommended in this thread, I'd also like to mention Jethro Tull, Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) and Camel. All are wonderful. Get "Songs from the Wood" and "Aqualung" from Jethro, "Per Un Amico" from PFM and "Moonmadness" from Camel for starters.
And some non-prog recommendations:
October Falls - Acoustic atmospheric folk music from Finland. Only the acoustic, piano and some other instruments can be found here. Beautiful. Only released the albums "Tuoni" and "Marras", I've only heard "Tuoni" so far.
Elfonìa - Featuring the singer Marcela Bovio who sang the part of "Wife" on Ayreon's release "The Human Equation". You could almost count it as prog (you can find it in progarchives), but meh, it's not really all that prog to me. But it still is great. Experimental folk with some uh.. mellow metal thing going on.. or something. :) You can even buy a signed copy of their album from their site.
Amon Amarth - Some metal for you. I guess this would best be described as Viking metal. :D It doesn't really sound that cheesy, even though the genre could give you that vibe. ;) Get the album "Once Sent From the Golden Hall".
Oh, and I'd like some recommendations on Baroque Classical music, and also something beatiful folk type of music with only acoustic or lutes and not much more stuff in it. I'd like to get my hands on the compilation album 'English Lute Duets' but no one seems to have it. :\ Oh well. So, any recommendations?

^I'm not looking for ANY Metal recommendations, since I spent enough of
my life with that genre - doing research, that is. I could probably
list like 40 Swedish Death Metal bands, alone, that I've heard. Amon
Amarth are pretty good. I don't like Opeth at all, too dullards - also,
the Death vox are misplaced. If I want Death Vox, I'll listen to
Demilich, or Brutality.
I'll look into the other bands, though. Thanks!

With the exception of TD you've listed the bands I can't seem to be able to get into. However try Arena (symphonic), Porcupine Tree (can't think of a proper label but I listen to PT when I am in a thoughtful mood). Agree with the Ayreon recommendations.

From your list of bands to check out, definitely give Magma a good listen! For a bit of metal I'd suggest, if you've never listened to any doom before, listening to Worship's "Last Vinyl before Doomsday" or "Last CD before Doomsday". I don't know exactly what you'd mean by neo folk since all sorts of stuff related to industrial seems to get called that, but if you're talking about bands like Tenhi, Empyrium, Agalloch (slightly), then have a listen to any of those that you haven't. You said you like modern classical music and two symphonic/gothic groups that draw heavily from modern(ish) opera are Devil Doll, who're in the archives, and Anigizia, who aren't nearly as good but I still like them.
http://www.archive.org/audio/netlabels.php - http://www.archive.org/audio/netlabels.php < free ambient/electronica, do a bit of sifting and you may find some gems.
For post rock there's a fairly unknown band from London who played a gig local to me called Detwiije. I suppose you'd know what to expect if you've listened to anything like it before, but they do it well.

Camel - Mirage
Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear and Brave
The Enid - In the Region of the Summer Stars
Twelfth Night - Live at the Target (Fact and Fiction is not really for newbies!)
Can - Ege Bamyasi
Not on your list, but essential anyway;
PFM - Photos of Ghosts
King Crimson - Discipline

By Neo-Folk, I mean bands such as Sol Invictus, Death in June, Current
93, Darkwood, Of The Wand & The Moon, and Nature &
Organisation. I do listen to some Doom Metal, Skepticism, Saint Vitus,
Candlemass, Evoken, Disembowelment, Thergothon, Pentagram, Esoteric --
to name a few. I've heard of Worship, but I haven't checked 'em out
yet, thanks. I've heard Agalloch one time, but don't remember much
about them, other than that they were Metal with folkish melodies and
longish compositions. Thanks for all the other info.

If you like Metal and Prog AND Folk then try this spanish band ... Mägo de Oz. They're rather good. Vionlin and flute arrangements. For me, musically, they are somme kind of metalized Jethro Tull. But conseptually they are sort of different. The emphasyse more on the depelopping actions more than in the ideas (they don't have Ian Anderosn as songwriter).

If you like techno/electronic, pick up St. Germain. They have a definate jazz sound with a techno feel to it.
Everyone else's reccomendations sound good. If your not already into it, grab some Dream Theater.

Yo IDDQD (nice name - brings back memories )
With no offense to the folks offering recommendations, I feel like some of them are off-base. Your list of bands includes ONE symph band (Camel), yet some of recommendations have been pretty much proggy-prog symphonic rock (Flower Kings?!?). Weird.
Based on your tastes I would say you MUST give Magma a shot, and also Present (who were formed by Roger Trigaux, formerly of Univers Zero, and are AMAZING - try High Infidelity). Also, since you like Henry Cow, try Art Bears, who kind of do the Henry Cow (circa In Praise of Listening) thing minus the improv and with concise, short song-form compositions and lots of Dagmar. I'll run with the RIO thread, given that you like UZ and Henry Cow, and recommend a few of the modern bands that are sort of along similar lines:
Thinking Plague - try any of them; I started with In Extremis
U Totem - the self-titled first is a masterpiece - sounds somewhat like Henry Cow's Western Culture
French TV - wacky American prog kind of like Samla Mammas Manna but with more of a fusion bent. The Violence of Amateurs is easily their best IMHO.
Don't know much about Krautrock, but you should definitely pursue Guru Guru and Amon Duul II. Also try Boredoms from Japan - Vision Creation Newsun is a great tribal freakout in the best Krautrock tradition.
In general I feel like many of the bands on the Cuneiform label ( http://www.cuneiformrecords.com/ - cuneiformrecords.com ) would appeal to you, since the owner of this label is a monstrous fan of Soft Machine, Canterbury in general, UZ, RIO in general, and the kind of stuff you listed in general. Great label.
Hope these are helpful!
