I'm finally going to break down and buy me an iPod - my first. I've done a bit of research and got the same old product push - what I need is a simple recommendation for a machine: - to be used solely for music
- don't need the max storage space, but enough to load a thousand CDs.
- would like something that won't be phased out before the end of the year - I'd like the machine to be relevant and usable for at least a couple of years.
I'd also appreciate some headphone models that work well with iPod and home computer/audio systems.
Any info would be greatly appreciated - and pardon the lack of tech savy. I'm still a turntable kind of guy.....even have an old 8-track machine that I break out when I want to hear those albums that I never upgraded (solo Ringo, Bad Company, Bloodrock).

| Dude, 1000 CDs is a lot! You'll need the max storage iPod, 120 GB. Might also want to look into other brands like iRiver to see if they might meet your needs, unless you really like Apple products and want to go that route. |

As far as headphones go, check out Sennheiser HD202. They're reasonably priced and sound excellent (plus they're comfortable). They're around-ear, so if you like earbuds I'm not sure.

To concur with Padriac, a thousand CD's is a huge amount of CD's. I have a 16 GB iPod and can load about seven days worth of music on to it (I'll estimate at about 150 CD's. It's fairly easy to change the music that I have on the iPod so I usually have what I'm looking for and if I don't, I simply add it to the pod that evening. I wouldn't worry about an iPod going obsolete, the older models still have the same basic architecture as the new ones. My first iPod was a 2 GB nano that I got for Christmas 4 years ago. My wife still uses it to this day and has no problems with it. So, with that all being said, I'd recommend the 16GB iPod Nano that is currently out. It's only $30 more than the 8GB model and will have a lot of storage space on it. If you're not willing to compromise on the thousand album model, I'd look for a model with at least a hundred GB of storage space. I record my MP3 files at a high quality setting (192 kb/sec for the more technologically orented) and average about 100 MB per album. Can't really give you any input on headphones as I mostly run my iPod through either my car stereo or my work computer. get the 80 gb or 120 gb, since you have a lot of albums. i know they used to make a 160gb iPod, but i do not see those around that much, if ever. i had a 80gb iPod (until it got stolen last summer) and there were never any problems. had it for almost 2 years and cant say there was any problems, other than running out of space all the time  . i'll probably get a 120 gb one after xmas------------- http://www.last.fm/user/MysticBoogy" rel="nofollow - My Last.fm

As an absolute beginner, I only go by what I've envied in other's iPods - one guy I met had dozens of movies and a whole slew of albums. So I thought 1000 CDs without any movies, podcasts, etc. was the norm....good to know.
I think a month's worth of CDs - 300 to 400 CDs would be more than enough.
As for headphones, no ear buds are best.

I had HD202s, and while they're great for $20, if you can afford it I would really recommend spending more on headphones, it makes a huge difference, and it's not like they wear out very easily.
I can fit around 200 albums on my 30gig, but I am fussy and rip my albums at 256-320 kb/s AAC, although a lot of them are eMusic downloads so those are much lower quality. However, if they were all 128kb/s MP3s, then you could fit a lot more. ------------- if you own a sodastream i hate you |

One of these days I'll move up to the Big Boy iPod. I still use a 2 GB iPod that I got as a gift a few years ago. I can only load about 15 or 20 albums on it at a time, but it gets me two or three days and it is pretty easy to remove and add albums, especially since I try to synch it for Last.FM counts and such on a fairly regular basis. -------------

I'm running with a 160 gig iPod Classic which is full, so occasionally I have to remove some stuff (simly unchecking the tracks in iTunes) to get different / newer stuff on. I've got around 14.000 tracks on it (plenty of which are at high quaility bit rates (256 / 320). Depends on budget, but as I listen to mine on the move (trains etc) then I need a decent pair of noise-cancelling headphones. I'm using Shure SE-530s, which are good, but cost a lot (think mine were around £220). -------------  Open the gates of the city wide....

I use two IPODs: a 120gb classic, onto which I load whole albums (and listen to each album in its entirety); and an 8gb Nano, onto which I load favourite tracks - I use the Nano only as a shuffle player.
I've tried many MP3 players over the years, but would now never switch from IPOD.
The headphones that come with an IPOD are very good quality and provide excellent sound if you give them a simple little two step tweak.
First, cover the five little holes on the outside of the earbud with a very small piece of sellotape (or whatever its called in the USA), then get some old fashioned, small, foam (not silicone) earbud covers and stretch these over the earbuds. You can get pairs of these from ebay very inexpensively. If you do this, you will find that the earbuds will stay in place surprisingly securely. Also you will notice a distinct improvement in sound quality and a much fuller and fatter bass sound.

I find it rather amusing that you say that, I just ordered an ipod with christmas money and am working on importing my cd's to itunes, i'm ripping at 320 kbs and using AAC, my uncle recommended that setting for the best quality, space isn't an issue since i ordered the 160bg model, great to hear that someone else uses the same bit rate for high quality audio, very reassuring : ) ------------- " Men are not prisoners of fate, but prisoners of their own minds." - FDR |
