Fide:

Actually, it depicts a scene from the movie Scanners; in fact, one of the best, if most gruesome.

It may or may not be unpleasant, but I don't think it rises to the level of ejectable.

Perhaps you should keep in mind that it is only "special effects" from a movie, and not the real thing...

Peace.

It's still distasteful Maani, even if you consider it art. No suggestion was made re ejection, just a request for something more tasteful. The clip is pretty graphic, special effect or not (I think most of us would have realised it wasn't for real). Are you suggesting it would only have been unacceptable if it was for real?Confused

Personally, I wouldn't watch that sort of sick film, and I don't wish to see images from it here.

Yours prudely.

Strange, I've no problem with that avatar, but the one Crimson Prince uses.... Yes, it's only animation, but I still find it a little distasteful.

Sorry CP.

The same goes for Crimson King's fratricide avatar. humour, yes, but porn & death representation, NO!

I solved that problem by being lazy and not chosen an avatar.

Fantomas's avatar is tasteless and Bob/Easy's remark about prudery is one to make me ponder!

How can one not offended by this sheer horror scenes and gruesome killings in most films (US or others) and sits fine with most censors(on the account that it is fiction and fake/trickery) but the slightest hint of pornography/nudity (i.e. the Janet Jackson tit ) creates havoc (because it is real and no reconstitution?!?).

Most people offended by nudity and a bit of erotism should get psychiatrist's help.

Do not get me wrong , I did not even see the slightest pornographic picture posted by this Belva character and certainly condemn the use of those in a site such as this. But if pornography is to be banned (hurray to that in the Archives) Bloody, gruesome gore shopuld also be banned.

I don't think you should say that anybody "offended by nudity should seek help".

Consider this: there are probably children under the age of consent in their respective nations who are reading this site. Even if you are not offended, don't you think the parents of said children would have a right to be angry that someone chose to expose them to those things in a way that the parents did not want?

And not everybody gets off on porno, anyway. I mean, I personally don't want to see it and don't appreciate it when people sneak it into a site where I don't expect it to be. That doesn't mean I need help. It means I think this site is the wrong context for nudity and erotism, and there IS a proper context for it. But not here.

I DO think you are right about needing to treat violence the same way as pornographic images, though.

Floyd Wright and Ivàn:

I will make absolutely no comment on those threads since I did not see any posting (nor have I really looked for them either) from this Belva character. However , I trust that the uproar created by the members is completely justified. I condemn the use of pornography on this site because it is out of place and not the subject/scope of the Archives.

FW,

I said that comment about getting psych help in context of my entire posts: people getting offended by nudity or erotism (there is a difference with pornography) but not by gruesome killings, gorry murders and general bloodshed as so often graphically shown in War Movies or Horror movies. There is a solid problem here. By the time a kid is 14 , he will have seen 10000 murders on TV without anyone saying anything , but if he saw once the very act that drives not only human life but every kind of Earthly animal life, the very essence of the sentiment so warmly sung in every possible manner , the act of love-making, then there is major havoc. Is there not a huge hypocrisy?

The uproar at the view of Janet Jackson's tit was another source of world laughter at American prudery (no offence meant at US or at anyone else) and would've gone unnoticed in the world if such a scandal was not made.

As for kids not seeing pornography on the Archives , you are right. But kids are not likely to be shocked by a slight nudity unless their parents induce in their minds that nudity is dirty/evil , so we end up repeating/reflect/pass-on  our hang-ups on future generations.

However , the other risk is that nudity/erotism is used at commercial ends to sell us cars , food , soaps etc.... is problematic but on a different scale. No uproar of that because it is business.

Read your response with interest.

Hugues

If I might add, this is not a site about violence OR pornography, so these
things have no place here, other than in some people's attempts to rile up
the membership (successfully).

It seems that to people like BELVA the internet is a place where they can
irritate people without consequences. Hence, this site will always be
plagued by them, as there are a lot of lonely freaks out there with nothing
better to do.

Whether porn is right or not is not really at issue here, it's whether it
belongs on progarchives, for humour's sake or not. I think most would
agree that it does not! There are millions of websites out there for those
that are interested.

Of course, it is a sad statement that children are exposed to all kinds of
dramatized violence on TV, in movies and in video games, but the site of
nudity or sexuality is considered taboo. At the same time, sex is used to
sell every item under the sun to us. No wonder so many people are
messed up over sexual issues, what with the mixed messages we are
bombarded with by the media and entertainment industries.

Posted By: FloydWright

I think what's wrong is that our whole culture's got a very warped view of the human body, in general, and both extremes (the commercializing/pornography and the uproar you refer to) are really two sides of the same coin. I think what's gone wrong is that the body--most especially the female body, but the male one to some extent as well--has been commercialized and exaggerated to a point where it's no wonder you get people perceiving it as something grotesque. Just take a look at a beer commercial, for instance...you'd think a woman wasn't worth anything unless she had breasts so large they have to be fake and/or give her tremendous back pain to live with. Or look at Britney Spears (if you can!). I really don't appreciate the use of sex to sell.

If you look at how the human body is depicted in art (that includes both commercial and fine art), it's very rare to see something now like the Statue of David or some of Storm Thorgerson's artwork (Shine On box set, PULSE, Broken China) where the body is not exaggerated or excessively sensualized (in an exaggerated, distorted way), but rather respected for what it is. The thing with pornography is, I don't think that in many cases the people who make it are going for realism...they're in more of a commercial, selling mindset that ends up distorting what should be treated with much more respect. Plus, I really doubt the emotion sought after is love, with all its spiritual, emotional, intellectual, AND physical components that go into a mature relationship--but mere arousal.

Therefore I think it's perfectly understandable that parents would rather choose for themselves how they want to introduce kids to sexuality...it's not like the media is providing any real guidance. It's not an issue of parents teaching kids that nudity is evil (well, I imagine there are some, but that wasn't the case with my growing up), but of explaining what is and what is not a proper context. As for me, I probably found out in the best place of all: a medical book, where there was no agenda other than explaining the facts.

No,it was a legitimite goal scored against my team,Man Utd, by his team Tottenham (Spurs). The "linesman" failed to do his job properly and award a goal because the ball had gone well past the goal line. The match finished 0-0.I have altered the image to depict what the assistant referee "saw".Wink

Posted By: Ivan_Melgar_M

Let me inform you Tony R that if the second picture is the real one, that's not a goal.

The whole 100% of the circunference of the ball has to pass the goal line and in this case obviously hasn't because a small part is covering the linel, or even if it's goal, thepicture doesn't define it.

If the left photo is true, well somebody should   javascript void0;" target=_blank onclick="replaceText' :hangit:', document.postmodify.message; return false;">Hang it   the referee and the linesman.

Football is my second passion of course the real football, not the USA sport where the ball is kiked only a few times in a game.

Yikes ... who knew the football avatar would be more irritating than the hammer and sickle!

I believe The Bullet, Floydwright, Tony R and Ivan all commented on this.

First off, my avatar is a genuine picture of a "goal" that was scored by Tottenham Hotspur (the team that The Bullet and I both support) against Manchester United (a team that I loathe). However the linesman was too far behind the play and the keeper scooped it out before he arrived and it was not given as a goal.

As a long time Tottenham fan surrounded by Manchester United fans (including my father, most of my friends and relatives ... in fact, Malaysia has the largest number of MU fans outside the UK) I was particularly outraged since I have long mantained that Manchester United gain a distinct advantage when playing at their home ground (in league matches from 1993 to 2003 penalties were awarded at a rate of 17 in favour of Manchester United and 1 in favour of whichever opposition they happened to be playing!

At the time of the incident I had already been quite annoyed by a match a few weeks earlier when Arsenal (Spurs' historical arch-rivals) lost to Manchester United in a match filled with dubious refreeing decisions and had a record-breaking 49 game unbeaten run snapped. It takes some doing to annoy a Spurs fan over an injustice to Arsenal, but I've always preferred to see my team lose in a fair game, rather than win deceitfully. (can someone get me an emoticon with a halo?)

Tony R, as a die-hard MU fan has accordingly found a misleading picture (which I just realised he admitted to having manipulated)  The MU fans in my office behave in a similar manner ... and continually delete this evidence of blatant injustice which I have set as my background on my work terminal... so I thought I'd get my own back my using it as my avatar. It's all in good fun of course, between overgrown boys!

By the way, Ivan, aside from supporting an EPL, the international football side I support, after my own no-hoper Malaysia of course is Colombia!     It's no joke supporting these brilliant self-destructive gents from half-way accross the world I can tell you!

Yes I must apologise for my part in that ... it is interesting discussion ... I do feel strongly that it is ridiculous that violence is far less censored than sex/nudity. As parents of three young kids, my wife and I have banned toys celebrating violence, and try and present sex/nudity in as open and honest a manner as possible.

I think most societies have strong religious (in US's case its Christianity, in Malaysia its Islam) sensibilities that try and suppress an open and honest acceptance of what human sexuality is  ... yet violence is widely accepted ...

By the way, the ban on weapons still didn't work ... my son started school and now he's dancing around the house pretending a broom is a light sabre ... which is no different from what I was doing 20 something years ago!

I was kidding about the football thing but this football violence (and not just the fans) will make it one day like the Roman Circus games.

Is there not a solid Chinese/Buddhist minority in Malaysia? I read a long time ago 55% Muslim , 35% muslim and the rest Hindus and Christians. However the religions seems to live together fairly quietly in Malaysia. Not so true in Indonesia (ie the Bali and East Timor incidents), but there the Muslims are some 85%, I think!

That really depends on which variant of Chrstianity you're looking at...if it's the conservative kind, I can definitely see there being a problem. But if it's a more levelheaded kind, the only way I can see anybody thinking there's something wrong with it is if they have objections to waiting to actually DO something until marriage.

All your avatars that I have seen so far are offensive. Can't you use a non sex related avatar? This is a music forum, in case you haven't noticed. You should realize that most people here are annoyed by your avatars, even if nobody PMs you about it. They simply are much more polite than you.

Then we should ask Fantomas if he is willing to change it.

I like it.  I think it really makes a statement about modern society and the struggles of man against nature.

I think an admin should ask Fantomas to change the avatar to anything which isn't related to sex.

Fantomas should really consider why nearly all his graphics involve violence or humiliation to women.

We all acknowledge that he is still very much a child, but you have to wonder....
