Hey guys,
probably not so interesting topic but today I got The Mars Volta's "Frances The Mute" and I'm shocked In a positive way though. I had a lower expectation because there is a big hype around the band but I am pretty amazed! It doesn't sound like anything I've heard before. It's so weird, there is practically no song scheme, no refrains etc. but it's full of energy, interesting sound effects, nice vocals... magical! For all of you who haven't listened to them yet, give it a try and maybe you'll be nicely surprised as I am

There's too much stuff going on and the riffs are average. It's only their second album. I know they can do better.

Its a transitionary peice, I love it to bits and the next album will make or break them. A little worried.

If their next album vaguely resembles Frances the Mute, then I'm going to be on Cloud 9. Best album of the year so far.

Yes, Very unusual and weird. So strange that such a new band managed to create such a unique sound.

I love it. I can't believe they've had to cancel their european tour - I was sooooo looking forward to it!

Love "Mars Volta", but I still haven't gotten into the lastest album. Maybe it'll get better after a few times.
But "De-loused in the Comatorium" is a real gem!

I'm in the same boat, De-Loused is a great album, but I am looking forward to being able to afford to get Frances.
Great to see new bands come out like that with a truly original sound (hmm, the definition of Prog?)
EDIT: Oops, sorry didnt read the post correctly. You have it and havent gotten into it, while I just ain't got it yet.

Im still looking for De-loused in the Comatorium, but I've yet to find
a store that has it. but I did find Frances The Mute....and i was blown
away...I love the randomness or it and the CD was pretty solid I
thought...
out of curiousity..were some of the members from The Mars Volta part of At The Drive-In at some point in time?

Omar and Cedric were.
"Relationship of Command" is a pretty neat album!

Incredible band!!!!! Funny thing, just before they arrived I was thinking that prog missed a really crazy, gutsy and dark band, and voila! "Deloused..." came along . They may not have the powers of chaos control that avant-garde jazz and contemporary classical musicians possess, but this makes their battle with chaos all the more dramatic and interesting .

I love the Mars Volta. Both albums are just great. Wish they'd stop by the East Coast for a show sometime.

I just head the Tremulant EP for the first time, half an hour ago ... I
was rather disappointed because it felt like I'd heard it all before
... I can't help wondering how I would have felt about it, if I'd it in
its correct context ...
I still think they need to move into a different direction for the
third full album though ... I loved De-Loused, and Cassandra Gemini and
parts of other tracks on Frances The Mute, but there is a danger of the
style getting a little tired ... personally I'd like to see more keys
and less atmospheric noise on the next one ...

I really tried with that CD, but after about 10-15 listens it just does NOTHING for me. I really am missing something I guess!!

Frances The Mute is a rather interesting album, to say the least.
But nonetheless, I've never really seen (heard) such constructive chaos.
I like it.

The Mars Volta and Sparta are never going to be able to top that
album. Relationship of Command was the best thing any of those
guys did and probably ever will do.

Their Tremulant EP is excellent.

It's a fascinating album, although I am not quite sure yet whether I really love it.
With their sounds described as new and uncomparable... listen if you have it to Introduzione, track one on the 1972 album Ys by Il Balletto di Bronzo....

I dont know about that, Relationship of Command is the only thing that At the Drive-In did that even comes close (and it surpasses) anything by TMV. I think TMV's peak will blow the hell out of that album. Listen to just how much the musicians in TMV have matured since De-Loused alone

They sound musically - very Djam Karet(I like them) to me - wicked vocalist(geddy lee) on top - sounds good to me - don't think we've heard the best of them yet though.

It's amazing music when they actually play music. I just HATE that ambient mumbo jumbo they apparently feel obligated to tack on to each song. I finally bought the 'frances the mute' title track single (the one released in europe but not US), and they tacked another like 5 minutes of ambient noise crap onto the song before they actually started playing.
I prefer the music on frances the mute, but I like De-loused better as an album because It brings straight up prog without all the pretentious noise experiments.

By the way... Frances the Mute is probably the most inexpensive album I've ever bought...
I've heard of people grabbing it at best buy for $5.99...

That's how I got my copy.
So far, I've only heard Frances the Mute and short samples of their other stuff. After I bought Frances it didn't leave my CD player for a week. I just reserved Deloused at my library, it should be here in a week or so. The store where I get my vinyls has a 12" picture disc of the Frances the Mute/The Widow single for $12, but I'm not sure if it's worth it for just that one song.

How representative of their work is the track that's available here
(Eriatarka)? I've listened to it, and based on that am definitely
interested in getting hold of their albums, but I do want to know if
I'm getting an accurate sample of their music.

I had some expectations from Mars Volta having read this and other forums for a while. But to my disappointment Fraces the Mute didn't capture me at all. Too psycopatic and going to nowhere, to my taste, and to much incoherent noises. Of course the album is original but the quality of the songs is rather mediocre, it seems to me.

Eriatarka is off De-loused, so if you like the song I suggest getting De-loused first. then, if you're still interested in the band, I'd get their EP, Tremulant, and get the new albun last. Starting off with Frances is not the smartest thing to do when it comes to the Volta.
