I agree, Snow Dog; my favourite is IQ, by a country mile (although I really want to give Glass Hammer a try someday soon)... and they aren't even listed!!!

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Marillion.

My choice is IQ, surprise surprise (well it would be if they were in the poll  )

Never recorded a bad album although the first 2 albums are a bit rough and ready soundwise.Even their 'pop album' Are You Sitting Comfortably is still an enjoyable listen while The Seventh House,Ever and Subterranea are three of the best prog albums recorded since 1980.

From that list I am familar with Marillion (not convinced by them - only Seasons End is a 'classic' IMO),Glass Hammer (havnt existed long enough but good band and one I enjoy a lot),Eloy (their best albums straddle the seventies and the eighties,so do they really belong in this poll?) ,Porcupine Tree (zzzzzzz...) and Flower Kings (excellent band but I prefer IQ)

i notice that Dream Theater, Spock's Beard and Transatlantic aren't there. Sort of makes it difficult to vote...

Hard Question.... I'd says Anglagard, Porcupine tree, and maybe Godspeed.

Prog is 70s though in my view. But some bands did continue on the legacy though.

I guess the polls don't work, in the sense that I can vote for ANY poll as many times as I want.

I voted for Marillion, but it could have been Porcupine Tree too.

My favorite neo-prog band is Pendragon, though. I love The Jewel, Kowtow, The Window Of Life and The Masquerade Overture.

Though DT is definitely not the best, it should be at least on the list!

My vote for TFK!

There are just far too few options.
Not worth voting.
But my favourites are The Mars Volta, Ozric Tentacles, Fantômas, Opeth, Ars Nova etc. etc.

CAMEL maybe???

camel was formed in 1971, so that leaves them out of this poll.
but i like your suggestion!

among the alternatives, i'd say Porcupine Tree.

I would say NIN or Depeche Mode are more progressive rock around 1990 than any of the clone bands like Dream Theater or Porcupine Tree or Anglagard. Unless the word progressive rock died at the end of the 70's and can only be reminised by copy wannabee bands!

Porcupine Tree all the way

I say Spock's Beard.

But unfortunately, they are not on the poll. So I say Marillion.

If Camel is out of this vote because they were formed before 80s then Eloy what are they doing here

Posted By: King Crimson

This was hard. I'm disappointed that Spock's Beard is not on here.

Anyway, I voted for Marillion.

Anglagard, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, Taal (really love that sample song), Echolyn

The story goes as follows....

Before Marillion signed to EMI they were called Silmarillion and as such entered a Battle of the Bands contest, which took place at the Mad Hatters Club in Luton, UK.  (Marillion came from nearby Aylesbury except for Fish who didn't).  My brother was in a "punk-pop" band called Looks Deceive and like Marillion got into the finals.  Anyway, my brother takes great pleasure in telling people how his band won the contest and beat Silmarillion.  What he doesn't tell people was that hot favourites to win Silmarillion didn't show up for the final as they were in London doing their EMI showcase gig (I believe) and the rest, as they say, is Fishtory.

If Dream Theater were on that list, I would vote them as #1.

But since they are absent, I'll have to vote for Porcupine Tree (with Ozric and Marillion as VERY close seconds!).

-------------
The more that things change, the more they stay the same.

If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Of the ones on that list i will go with Glass Hammer.

Overall, probably THERION, though they're progressive metal rather than
metal per se. Of the symphonic bands, perhaps SINKADUS.
REVOLUTIONARY ARMY OF THE INFANT JESUS were fantastic too, with
three outstanding albums, although only on the fringes of prog (more a
folk/psychedelic/industrial crossover, but still very proggy). Can't say I
really rate any of the bands in the list.
