Hi, all - - new here, I'm Paul from New Zealand, mostly
into Symphony/Neo prog but appreciating most of the other
sub genres as well. I introduced myself earlier this
morning on the newbie thread, and mentioned I like to host
a prog onlinle radio show every week.

Thought this might interest a few of you. The online radio
show I'm doing tomorrow night at 9 PM EST (New York time)
is all about the Wah wah pedal and its contribution to
prog and rock. I've collected a number of songs featuring
the wah and I'll be playing them online for 2 and a bit
hours. I just love stories about instruments and effects
used in prog - mellotron, e-bow, etc. This is more a
salute rather than an exposition.

What I've also done is start a small competition for

bragging rights when it comes down to knowing your wah
from your wah. I put these questions together to see how
many proggers can guess the songs they're associated with.
I didn't want to make it too easy, so they're a little
cryptic. Maybe too cryptic, but you're welcome to work
them out.

1 # A Liverpudlian wrote this song after getting a headache arguing with his

friend in the band he was in at the time.

2 # What you get when you cross a dairy product with a heroic character

written about by Homer (not the du*oh! one) and Virgil.

3 # Mick Box giving his wah a thorough magical workout on this long track.

4 # Led Zeppelin – need I say more? I'm sure you know the "one".

5 # Tony Iommi – don’t go all paranoid on me if you don’t get it right.

6 # Yes – Maybe it's a fish on a bicycle pedal? But really, it's

an anthropomorphism for the life and death of a bird,

lyrically speaking.... at the end following sweetness.

7 # Miles Davis – wah wah phrasing on a corner.

8 # Buster does guard duty on a Dylan number.

9 # A bird with flatulence in search of…?

10 # Porcupine Tree – doing it for real this time.

I did offer a prize of sorts that who ever got the most

correct answers and if tied there would be a draw, would

have the chance of putting some of their favourite tunes

(as long as they didn't have offensive language or subject

matter)together in whatever order they like and with

dedications, and they would be played in a two hour

special show next week on the station. And you're welcome

to join in on that as well. I'm closing off the

competition later tonight (midnight - New York time).

The  bird is hawkwind and the track can be You Should't Do That.

Black Sabbath Electric Funeral.

Well Mick Box, can be July Morning (the solo) or Magician's

Hi,

When you graduate to some of the wahwah in Amon Duul and Ash Ra Tempel ...even Can ...  heck, maybe Guru Guru ... ohh geee .. someday you will grow up to enjoy Terje Rypdal! ...  I also think that a lot of Japanese guitarists might want to give you the chopstick treatment ...

let me know ... might even find that there are way more people out there that nknow how to hold a guitar in there hand and do something with a wahwah ... not just a couple of radio hits!

A few people have suggested this track, but nope. Think an early album where it follows sweetness <g>

Thanks for the suggestions. will definitely check them out. My education in Amon Duul and the others you suggested is somewhat lacking. I recall the albums back in the 70's, but much preferred the symphony stuff.

Yes, I will be playing a couple of radio hits, but also throwing in Hawkwind, Miles Davis, Schleigho, Ozric Tentacles, Mr Quimby's Beard, Uriah Heep, Jean Luc Ponty, Groundhogs, The Flower Kings, Porcupine Tree, Steve Vai,and a handful of others like Hendrix and Led Zeppelin.

And you're right - sometimes it's not just the sound, but the little nuances and inflections artists put into their performances using tools such as wah or e-bow for expressive purposes, that make it that little bit more special.

Yes... it's Survival. Not much Wah, but a good bass intro, none-the-less.

I've added a few more clues:

1 # A Liverpudlian wrote this song after getting a headache arguing with his

friend in the band he was in at the time. He was one of 4 mop-tops who

yeah, yeah, yeah'ed all day long. This particular song was given the

'wall of sound' treatment who is now has walls he’d rather not be

surrounded with. A lot of rock celebs assisted with this album. In

Liverpool this song title means ‘headache.’

2 # What you get when you cross a dairy product with a heroic character

written about by Homer (not the du*oh! one) and Virgil. From an album

which title eludes to a Queen Victorian member of parliament and

something you change often on a car

4 # Led Zeppelin – need I say more? I'm sure you know the "one".

I’m guessing this song left you in the same state as the

    track title suggests <g>

5 # Tony Iommi – don’t go all paranoid on me if you don’t get it right.

    Follow the guitar lead - “Wah… Wah… Whop,Whop,Waaaahhhh…” <g>

Alongside Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, this album is one of the best.

7 # Miles Davis – wah wah phrasing on a corner.

The album title is in there somewhere…

8 # Buster does guard duty on a Dylan number.

Buster was this legendary guitarist’s nickname.

Dylan said that this artist did a better version

of this track than him. Watch the borders!

10 # Porcupine Tree – doing it for real this time.

from an album akin to a dumb hallucination.
