I always confuse Russell with Redbone.

Love Cooder- one of the greatest slide players ever. Does cool soundtrack work, too.

Haven't heard leon Russell but the rest I love
Cooder's Chicken Skin Music is cool
JJ Cale is fabulous 3am music and
Dixie Chicken is my favourite Feat album and one of
my all-time favourite 'southern rock' records
Roll Um Easy is a wonderful, wonderful sad little
song, and i love Fool Yourself (what a chorus!)

Funny I kinda lump those guys in with the Allmans
for some reason even though i know its different.

I agree with what  Arcer said about JJ Cale

Little Feat is a damn fine outfit of Jamband music. Really good musicians.

Lowell George.... Oh my, chicken pickin' fun. Cooder, Russell, Cale? All good stuff.

Have you heard of Sonny Landreth.... toss him in with that bunch and we'll have us a Hurricane Party.

I find Ry Cooder a bit lightweight, for all his slide-playing prowess.
Some nice soundtrack work though. This is my favourite of his releases:

Particularly like his Paris Texas work..Big smile

For those wanting to investigate some lost southern
classics! As good (no kidding!) as the Allmans,
Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top, the classics by these
artists(much better than the most of the ones you are
listing) IMO.
Leon Russell - Carney, Leon Russell and the
Shelter People(Elton John never made albums
better than these)
Ry Cooder - Jazz(mostly all instrumental, a classic!)
JJ Cale - Naturally or more recently Closer to You(of
course you knew he wrote Cocaine and he's version
is better than Claptons!)
Little Feat - Feats Dont Fail Me Now or Sailin
Shoes(equal to Dixie Chicken)

I agree with that.  He also wrote  Bringing it Back that Kansas covered on their first album.

YOUR ACE BRYAN

BUT DO YOU ACTUALLY LIKE PROG ROCK?

Little Feat was incredible in their day.  Check out their live Waiting for Columbus.  The quality of playing would please the most discriminating progger but with a great funky groove and superior songwriting.

Sonny Landreth might be the best slide player working right now.  His best is South of I-10.

I really dig the first three Feat LPs....then they went off into what Lowell George described as "Weather Report music" after that.....but still fine LPs....one of my fave rock bands of all time.

Leon Russell was a key part of the Wrecking Crew in the late 60s....a bunch of LA session men who'd get the call at all times of day to carry out the more complex charts being laid down by pop/rock bands....my fave LP from Leon is an LP called "Carney" that was used as the soundtrack to the movie of the same name and produced by Robbie Robertson.

Ry Cooder is a conservative experimentalist....he played on the Stones "Let It Bleed" LP and then recorded some excellent LPs in the country-rock vein....he even recorded an excellent LP of depression era folk songs.  Recently he's been into Indian ragas (check out the "Meeting by the River" LP with V. Bhatt), Cuban jazzy blues (Buena Vista Social Club)....hell, he recorded a Hawaiian music LP some years back called "Chicken Skin Music" that opened up a whole generation to the slack stringed style of the Hawaiian islands....the man's a credit to musicians everywhere no matter what anyone may think of him....

JJ Cale has a nice mellow blues style....but, IMO, if you've heard one JJ LP, you've heard 'em all....he's the man responsible for Eric Clapton's descent from guitar god soloist to laid back pop-blues a la "One in Every Crowd".....still, excellent music for a groovy summer night.

Little Feat - Dixie Chicken, Sailin' Shoes, Feets Dont

best Elton John albums.

Leon Russell - Carney and LR and the Shelter

Ry Cooder - Jazz and Randy Newmans - 12 Songs
w/ Ry are classics.

JJ Cale has a nice mellow blues style....but, IMO, if
you've heard one JJ LP, you've heard 'em all....he's
the man responsible for Eric Clapton's descent from
guitar god soloist to laid back pop-blues.
Cocaine was written by JJ and his version sounds
better!
cant blame JJ for Eric love for his sound!
JJ Cale produced an album in the 90's Closer to You
that hints back to the prime period of rock and is
superior to most anything else produced in this time
period!

Little Feat's "Waiting for Columbus" is a great live album.

Ry Cooder's "Chicken skin music" is heap big fun. check out his work on "The buena vista social club", great Cuban music.

Leon Russel peaked in the early seventies with his own live album and his collaboration with George Harrison on "The concert for Bangladesh".
