I've visited this site frequently for a long time....I'm finally taking the plunge and signing up.

I've been into prog rock ever since I first heard Moving Pictures at my sixth grade graduation party in '82.    That was a whole new world to me.   Rush was GOD from '82-'87.

I was *BIG* into the thrash movement of the early eighties....I really liked the way that thrash took the interesting time changes from prog, and infused them into metal.   During that time I got into a (then) little known band called Fates Warning.    I bought The Spectre Within on the new release rack just because of the awesome cover.

Then in '92, when I was working at Tower Records, I received a demo of the most incredible FW rip off band I had ever heard......DREAM THEATER! LOLWink   At first, I really couldn't believe how much they were stealing FW's sound....but after a few spins, I really began to realize that these guys had taken it to a whole new level and were really blowing away anything FW had ever done.

Lately I've been listening to alot of Riverside, Porcupine Tree and Pain of Salvation.

Seems like once a decade, I hear a band that totally changes the way I look at music.   In the 80s it was Rush, the 90s Dream Theater.........for the 00's, it's actually been a tie between PT and PoS.....they are just so different its impossible to decide which one I like more.

I've also been delving more into older prog.     I've only just recently started getting into some stuff by Gentle Giant and Camel.....GREAT stuff.

What else....ummm.....I guess I don't have to do everything all at once.    Just wanted to say hi to everyone.   Some people might recognize me as a LONG time member of the MP.com forum.....so a quick "hi" to all my peeps from there.

Hope to stick around awhile....

Hello from the east US.  Just a fair  warning.  You will likely discover more good music than you can deal with.  Have fun and may you live in interesting times.

It sounds like we have taken similar paths.  6th grade graduation in '82.  Rush/Fates Warning/Dream Theater.  And most recently with PT and PoS, although I didn't really care for PoS's latest.

I am thinking that you should check out the band Tiles.  They are produced by Terry Brown, who I am sure you have heard of as a Rush and Fates Warning fan.  They were also the opening act for Dream Theater about 5 years ago for Dream Theater's European tour.  Never any guarantees with my recommendations, but I have a feeling that you will like them.  Alex Lifeson made a guest appearance on their most recent release Fly Paper.

Presents of Mind is in my collection, though I havn't spun it in a long time.    Not that I didn't LOVE it.....as a matter of fact, thanks for reminding me of them.   Just kept getting pushed down the priority list I guess.

I'll have to check out what they've been up to lately.    But PoM is incredible.

I think that most folks around here that are familiar with Tiles, including me, consider Presents of Mind to be their best work.  I like all of their albums quite a bit though, including Window Dressing and Fly Paper, their two most recent albums.  I have no connection with the band, but I am fortunate enough that they are from around here, so I have seen them play 4 times this year promoting Fly Paper.

A couple of other suggestions that you might want to check out are Vanden Plas, Thought Chamber, and Threshold.  All 3 are traditional prog metal bands that I also enjoy quite a bit.
