Don't know most of this bands, since metal isn't my prefered style.
I like Fantomas quite a bit, from this list I listen to Symphony X the most.
Also Threshold is among my favourites of these days.
Don't really like Nightwish
From the past, I like Queensryche and some Dream Theater.
Also Yngwie Malmsteen I've listened too a lot in the past, but I find him to be too simple straight forward glam/metal.
I really know too little for an informed opinion, but this is it anyway

Its a despicable sub-genre, which pollutes decent prog music with god-awful metal, but Dream Theater are the best at it.

Maybe someone forget Pain of Salvation and Savatage??? (what???...children of bodom? bleah!)
Why no one consider PSYCHOTIC WALTZ? Absolutely one of the greatest progmetal bands ever!

Dream Theater.... But what about Evergrey, Crimson Glory, Pain of Salvation????
Nightwish is not a progressive metal band.....

I would have liked to have seen both Threshold and Shadow Gallery in your list, as along with DT and Symphony X, they are the only prog metal bands I enjoy..... trust me to be difficult, eh?

well most of the bands listed are not progressive at all, I love Children of Bodem but they are not at all prog, the same could be said for Yngwie, last I checked he was just a w**ker guitar player. Dimmu is black metal, so it relays on heavy layers and not a lot of time changes, and the chords used are fairly straght forward, haveing said that Sagrath dues rule but they are not prog. I'm sorry but this poll just seems to be set up to reinforce somebody's love for dream theater. DT is great but some times they just come off way to showie. Space can be used to say more then a thousand notes some times. In addition wheres Rush? The origanal heavy-prog band. Wheres Edguy or hell if your going to have a w**ker on there why not have the greatest w**king band of all time ManOWar on your list, Joey DeMio can play rings around Yngwie, and Joey plays bass

Big error in missing Threshold and Pain of Salvation. Other than that Dream Theater and classic Queensryche are clear winners.

I've always liked the British spelling of "Theatre" instead of "Theater", but here it has to be Dream Theater.
Best prog-metal band is DT. Ayreon is great too.

dude are you serious with this poll?? Dimmu Borgir are black metal (posers), Nightwish are pop-metal, Children of Bodom are power with black vocals and Yngwie Maelmstein is a virtuoso guitar player.
Of cousre best prog band in these is Pain of Salvation.
I voted for Queesnryche.
P.S. Watchtower are f.ucking awsome!

I voted for Dream Theatre. Is this poll some kind of joke because half of these bands are not even Progressive like Children of Boredom and Demon Burger.

Dream Theater, with Nightwish very close behind.

Who the hell is Dream Theatre?
Anyway, I was ultimately split between DT, Symphony X, and Queensryche.
I ended up selecting Dream Theater just because Queensryche started
doing a lot of very mundane stuff after they really broke through in
the early 90s (Operation: Mindcrime is a masterpiece nonetheless), and
because I still haven't heard enough Symphony X to make a proper
decision- none of the record stores around here have anything
resembling a decent selection and there are maybe five good torrents of
their albums on the Internet.

Better title for this list would've been
sh*tE
Oh, yes. To answer the question I would side with Dream
Theater for the best prog-metal band. Although yes, PAIN OF SALVATION
is the best group on the planet, lumping them in a prog-metal category
is debasing the purpose of everything they've done thus far.
Peace & take care

albums.

Had to vote for Queensryche. Rage for Order through Promised Land contains some of the best metal music you can find. I can hardly wait to see them live in June with Judas Priest.

Yep, Cynic should be up there, as should be Opeth and Gordian Knot.
But since they're not, guess who I'm voting for
